I hadn't thought I was able to discern any dancers' skill, or pick favorites, but ohhhhh my god I get it now. the slow, perfect smoothness of those 'trust falls' at the beginning is absolutely STUNNING. she moves like time is slower for her
Thank you for the insight ladies. Those back falls are the epitome of trust and fit the moment perfectly. And I always find it super romantic when he wraps their arms round from behind. It was an amazingly fluid performance and for once Siegfried was as much in focus as odette.
Thank you for analyzing this pas de deux and especially for choosing this Zakharova-Bolle performance, the first Swan Lake I ever watched, just a few years ago (now I am spoiled forever). That first paired arabesque with her arms moving so elegantly, and his hand curving gently around her waist later as she falls backward are sheer perfection, just two of many such moments during this piece. This pairing was a gift from the ballet gods and I am in awe of it! Thanks again!
first time im paying so much attention to swan lake despite knowing about the ballet at surface level! honestly, i find the free fall of odette sooo pretty to watch that i had to keep on rewatching it so many times!! i was thinking that not only did odette was symbolising the trust between her and the prince, perhaps she was also signifying how the day she 'fell' and faced her fate as a swan as well? just a thought in mind
I too am glad you chose this Zakharova-Bolle pairing. I agree with everything you say about Svetlana in this role. She is exquisite and her performance is enhanced by the unobtrusive masculine strength of Bolle's partnering. His arms and hands (and feet!) always seem to be in just the right place: elegant, supportive and responsive to what his partner or the role requires. It doesn't hurt that he is so good looking either.
My favorite odette/odile. She’s amazing, beautiful, captivating. Her odile and odette are like two separate dancers, I just worship her, and this my favorite swan lake of all time
I absolutely love Tchaikovsky’s music, especially Swan 🦢 Lake’s. There’s not one bad note in the whole score. I love dancing the whole white act, even the corps de ballet (one of the most precise and taxing stamina wise along with Shades and Wilis), and the “Big Swans” part - great for taller jumpers! Being trained in Moscow, extensions are definitely expected but what makes Sveta even more beautiful and Swan like is her long arms. They can be tricky for turning and certain lines (I know the struggle! I got super long arms and have to aware of them in PDDs!). She’s my second favorite Odette only behind the GOAT 🐐 Ulyana Lopatkina 👏🏻🩰
The last part (especially!) left me with chills! I sent this video to my kids for my granddaughters who are just starting out taking ballet lessons. Even if the discussion is over their heads, I’m hoping that seeing superb dancers is inspiring? (Yes, this grandma studied ballet many moons ago and I hope they will share my love for it!)
Awww that’s wonderful!! We hope that they are inspired by this beautiful piece and these amazing dancers. We wish them the very best in their ballet training journey! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻☺️💕
Roberto Bolle is an absolute legend in Italy. He had his own evening prime time show about dance and it was awesome to see. he talked about dance a lot and invited many different dancers it was so insightful!
OMG girls I love the way you talk about the ballet, the dancers, the story, the emotions … it’s a pleasure to watch and listening to you. Thank you very much. ❤
Love hearing your guys’ thoughts and learning from you! Odette is for sure one of Zakharova’s best roles, her poise and maturity (combined obviously with her perfect lines) really shine through in this very tragic character. Bolle is magnificent as well, every bit the artist she is. I was so jealous when you guys were discussing how perfectly he keeps her on her leg 😂 Love this analysis type of video, eagerly awaiting the next installment (and any other video you ladies put out 💖)
I hope you can talk about the Nutcracker next time just because it’s my favorite ballet of all time! 😂 I know we get to see it every year but I still feel so touched every time I see it
So well explained! I love how you are breaking down the idea of trust issues, I think this is indeed a thing (also because of Odette's rather toxic experience with men - Von Rothbart - and Siegfried had been also there with the crossbow on hunt - so also rather a danger for her). Zakharova and Bolle are a truly beautiful ballet couple and it's indeed one of the best Swan Lake recordings at La Scala; still, I feel Zakharova has more fun with being Odile. Also Bolle is too much already a perfect prince, and not the insecure young man on his 21th birthday and being grown up at last. My favorite cast is from Royal Swedish ballet Nathalie Nordquist and Anders Nordström; I really love how they are living their parts and how the frightened Odette is getting closer to him...Zakharova is pure, but not so much with trust issues (; Btw, what do you actually think about the expanded pas de deus ending? It's only rarely seen in productions, sometimes also as Siegfried's solo, and it turns the poetic quiet ending more in a party mood (;
Beautiful! Thank you for the explanations. I love Swan Lake. TH-cam just can't handle captions for ballet terms, though. "Pas de deux" gets rendered as everything from "Parada", "Potter", and my favorite, "potato". 🤣
@@balletreign It's not the worst captions blooper I've seen, but the White Swan Potato might be the funniest one, especially with the idea of a potato trying to be graceful... 🤣
That was awesome. Beautiful dancing and the ballerina almost as cute as Eden. I looked you up on Google and found the Dying Swan. It helped me through the frustration of you two not dancing for us yet. F
Thank you for another beautiful commentary and analysis. 🤍 I have always admired this part of the ballet, you two just made it even more endearing for me. Mahusay! Ballet Reign 🦢
Amazing analysis and mesmerizing pas de deux! The amount of details about the storytelling of the various steps and port de bras our attention was drawn to was mindblowingly insightful! Thank you so much for that: it transforms my experience of ballet, and feeds my passion for it! Deep bows of appreciation Eden and Jordan!
SZ also happens to have long, thin arms and legs, a long torso and very thin body which all ad up to an enormous advantage in achieving elongation in almost everything she does. Good BALLET DNA.
Bellissimo video! La cosa che preferisco della Zakharova sono le sue braccia. Sono così fluide e morbide! Questo pas de deux è un capolavoro, anche dal punto musicale. E' bellissimo il contrasto che fa con il pas de deux del cigno nero. Grazie😍❤!
i don't know a single thing about ballet but it looked good, 10/10 lol. seriously though, i love learning more about this stuff from you two, thanks for all your hard work!
The choreographer created the emotional arc to the melody which pre-existed. Tchaikovsky wrote the ballet first....as music. The choreographer created the storyline. Petipas originated the story with the original choreography which we know is sometimes altered to some extent, in contemporary ballet companies.
Even if I've watched Swan Lake a couple of of times, you guys always bring new insight with these Appreciation videos. Can't wait for more, particularly ballets I don't really know very well.
would you guys ever do a video ranking/discussing your favourite lifts or partnering elements (as you did with ballet steps and variations)? I love y'all's vibe, your videos are always very relaxing to listen to
Thanks ladies for your analysis and enthusiasm. These videos explaining the narrative's "sign language" and the importance (and difficulty!) of the technical aspects of the dance are fascinating and very valuable in totally appreciating what I am seeing when I watch these ballets. I like your fun and funny videos, too, but these with more substantial content are what I prefer. Thank you! ❤❤❤ 0:44
You guys are amazing! I really Love that You notice every single detail ♥️🤩 I am so glad to see that I am not the only fanatic obsessed with ballet and small details and it’s beauty ♥️
I used to do White Swan pas de deux, not the most difficult for the male, a lot of balletic walking around & posing. Though one has to achieve elegance … and the partnering requirements are essential. It’s a difficult skill to partner a woman, to support the women, requires a ton of practice … enabling her beautiful geometry, balance, turns, lifts, musically … the man should adore the woman - the male cannot feel detached from her … she depends on the man to expertly support her,, keep her on balance … IMHO - Swan Lake, pas de deux … white or black … are of the very best pas de deux ever .. the music, the inspired choreography ❤️
Siegfried is fabulous. However I also found Rudolf Nureyev very expressive as he performed the same pas de deux with Ms. Piggy on the Muppet Show (Swine Lake). Even in this pastiche the mastery of Nureyev cannot be overseen (it is also here on TH-cam).
@@balletreign Yes, even if Nureyev took ballet very seriously, he didn't take himself seriously. There are more very good pieces in that episode of The Muppet Show which show that. Perfectly executed and very funny..

Thanks so much for watching all our videos, we’re glad to have you here! 🇲🇽 🇺🇸 We have a dance studio we dance at and hope to share more about our dance journey in the future :)
This one is absolutely stunning 🤩 great question! it usually takes anywhere between a few weeks to a few months to prepare a full length ballet (2ish hours long). It’s a lot of hard work, but it’s worth it! 🙌🏻🙌🏻
I was interested in your comment about Zakharova being noted for her extension. I think a high extension is fine up to a point, but I don't find a dancer extending her foot up to her ear at all beautiful. (Alina Somova, for example.) Curious about your thoughts on this subject.
We appreciate you sharing your thoughts on that! In ballet culture, it is just a sign of the work dedicated into developing the flexibility and strength to raise the legs that high, so that is what is commonly considered “beautiful”. But beauty is subjective of course! 😆
In my opinion, Zakharova's extensions are one of her most recognisable features, but it's not what makes her so great. The reason why I consider her among the best ballerinas of all time is the way she uses her body to dance and create figures, the attention she has to coordinating every part of her body, beautiful flawless arms, instense emotional interpretation and very exact musicality
Such a shame you chose Zhakarova. To my mind a very cold, emotionless, dancer. Apart from the fact that she is so thin, and bony, and over -done extensions. He a fabulous charismatic dancer.
For me, the ultimate Odette is Natalia Makarova - specifically her recording with Sir Anthony Dowell from the 1980 Royal Ballet video. No one has bettered her.
