Of course we want a full Coppelia commentary! As someone who's loved ballet all my life I'm so appreciative of you educating us further about any and all classical ballet aspects! Thanks!
I feel like that part where she throws the tantrum would go really well with the "ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED" audio, followed by a crisp "Good Day Sir" when she bows.
If you watch the new Coppelia by Alexey Ratmansky in La Scala, this variation is finished with Swanhilda turning her backside to the balcony and rising up the tutu. It is so amazing in character building!!! Nicoletta Manni is soo good in it.❤
Didn't Mayara Magri just make principal? She was really very polished and complete at YAGP! I noticed her in the corps of Manon when she was still in the corps and was happy to see her rise through the ranks. My first thought with Osipova (also now at the RB) was, why is she wearing a yarmalka? 🤣 When she was younger, she really excelled at these soubrette-type roles, and of course, her technique is unparalleled. Fun comparison! Yes, analyze Coppelia!
As an audience member I much prefer watching the full ballet version. And I’d love if you did a commentary on the ballet. Thank you for this comparison I was unaware that the competition versions of variations are different.
Coppélia was a ballet I found out about from a friend, and to day it's probably one of my favorite and holds a special place in my heart. I'd love a Coppélia explained video. I actually want to do an SF retelling of it someday
OMG I'm SO glad you did this video!!! Watching Natalia perform Swanhilda in this ballet was actually also the moment where I was thrown into my obsession with ballet, and the first thing that caught my attention was the music because I recognized it from something else and that just grabbed me for the entire ballet. I've always loved the full-length version more because of that, but I LOVE the choreography for the competition version and it makes me a bit sad that Swanhilda doesn't dance that much for that variation in the full-length ballet. During the last time we performed Coppelia, our director/choreographer actually managed to combine both versions and I LOVED it. Also, I'm sure you know this, but there is a rehearsal for the Royal Ballet with Mayara as Swanhilda, so I almost wish you used that version just for fun, but Natalia IS my favorite dancer so I'm very happy to see her here It would be SO AMAZING if you could do a commentary on the whole ballet because it is my favorite ballet, and I'd love to watch you talk about the character dances, Swanhilda pretending to be Coppelia (probably my favorite thing that she does), and the really interesting 3rd act
Awww YAY we’re so glad you were so excited about this video! We have been hearing a lot about these “hybrid” Swanhilda variations from you guys, and we are so intrigued by that… we usually just use the traditional full length version, but that mix of both would be so cool. Thanks for watching and for sharing your thoughts and request for a full analysis 🧐 stay tuned! 😉💕
Loved this, so informative and so much fun. I'd never even considered that the variations for competition weren't taken straight from the ballet but it makes so much sense. I wish I'd seen this before I watched the Royal Ballet's cinema version with Marianela Nunez, I'd have been able to appreciate even more of the details. Would be very happy to watch a full analysis (late to this so perhaps you've already done it)! And for other ballets too. Off topic but have you seen the RB's series of ballet history videos on you-tube? (Quite old now but evergreen.) I think Mayara was the demonstrating dancer in some of them, that's where I first saw her dance. Was a really good series, I thought; would enjoy your thoughts on it... :-)
omg please do a full length ballet analysis of Coppelia!!! Your analysis of Giselle and Swan Lake were both A M A Z I N G and done so beautifully ! They are my favorite videos to watch. I know I’d be thankful for more!✨🩰
Please please do a Coppelia analysis; it is such a good ballet. My only problem with it is that it sometimes doesn't seem Dancy enough. I like the competition version of the solo better. I would like to see something a little bit more like it in the ballet, but with a bit more of the acting of the usual version. I know it's tough to get the story and character started, and still bring out the wow factor; (there's only so much music). I love the Coppelia music; Delibes was a genius. I like Sylvia and La Source too; and there is a lovely Opera Lakme that also includes a cool dance sequence.
Thanks for your thoughts on this! Definitely agree on Delibes he is such a legend 🙌🏻. Thanks for watching, and stay tuned for a full Coppelia Analysis ☺️
Yes we need a full length Coppelia commentary please. Also when I did YAGP there were two dancers that did this variation and one of them did the variation from the ballet. I love both variations but me being me I would say that the variation from the ballet has to be my favorite only because I'm a sucker for playfulness in ballet.
Also don't tell Eden (tehehe) but I think I'm able to convince our artistic director about doing the Beatrix Potter Ballet and I may have told her that the Jemima Puddle Duck role was made for me lol.
My daughter and I have recently found your channel and just love it so much! We are learning so much from your commentary. Thank you so much! Would love a full Coppelia analysis...or any other ballet for that matter. We watched the three you have done and they are just fantastic! My daughter will be dancing Lilac Fairy in YAGP this year, pre-competitive and she and I both are just obsessed with learning all things ballet!
Oooooooh. Memories. Was a young 'un. Went to NYC on my own. To dance. Had little clue about, well.. the Big City. One of the first things I saw.. went to see ABT, the rare air student section. I think, pretty sure it was Cynthia Gregory as Brunhilde, Coppelia. Heavenly. Next morning, went to one of my first ballet classes, a beginners class... and in walks Ms Gregory. I couldn't believe it. She, beginner's class?? Learned quickly I'd walked into The School of American Ballet, Balanchine's first studio (he was long gone to NYCB and Lincoln Center). I had no clue of the history of the studio tho.. just picked kinda from the phone book. Anywayz, each class the creme de la creme dancers would come in. More heaven. Ballet master came to me after the first beginner's class and suggested I should be in his 4:30. Um, me still clueless.. ok I guess. It was the professional class. More creme dancers came in. More heaven. Finally, after a couple of weeks, Ms Gregory came in, and after barre the ballet master turned the class into a partnering class. He said later so I could partner Ms Gregory. Can we say I'd now expired and gone to heaven? All this started with my first Coppelia as a young 'un. Your video brings such memories back... yay.
@@balletreign It was. A time of heaven. Endless things happening. One more and will let it go. Second class. I'd just seen Ivan Nagy and Natalia Makarova in, argh.. something epic. Can't remem. Anywayz, second class, I'd already settled in to that 'fav spot' that dancers make home. Was warming up, and in walks, yeah.. Ivan Nagy. Goes right to his fav spot I assume, which was my spot. Ops. Super nice tho. Get to the allegro and the ballet master sets the lines he wants. He selects only two in the first line. "Ivan", please.. here. Then, and me. OMGOMGOMGOMG. Terrified. It is amazing how much technique and expression one finds when purposely placed in the first line, in front of a slew of NY dancers. Yikes. It worked out tho. Loved that studio. /Will stop memory lane stories.
Thank you again girls. Lovely start to Saturday evening. So interesting to see how different the variations are but so right in their context. The tantrum always makes me laugh
I would love to see a full Coppelia commentary! I saw it for the first time on Sky Arts, then on DVD, both versions from the Royal Ballet and it was one of the two ballets that first got me interested in watching and understanding ballet! Love it.
This video made me realise that every dance class we use this music as a warm up. Seeing what you are normally doing to it has brought sheer terror and awe to my brain. Ballet is so hard, but it's worth it.
Wow…just think…in 10 years you can dance like that 16 year old if you started ballet at age 6. Wow….10 years goes by fast too. Stick with it you beautiful dancers out there…..❤
Thank you once again. I'm not a dancer and don't know this ballet, but I join with others requesting a full length commentary on Coppelia. I'm loving your channel!
Yes to the full Coppelia commentary!! Also dw Eden if you bowed to me and danced I would absolutely say yes let's be friends and we can sit together side by side in mostly silence listening to classical music 🤣 Introverts unite!!
Hello ballet reign😅 just wondering if you have the time to do a commentary on flames of Paris I really would love that, I'm quite new to ballet but with you, I learn so much. And I also love the video
Hey there! 😄👋. We are so glad you enjoy our videos and that we could help you learn about and appreciate ballet. We would love to do a commentary on Flames of Paris! Stay tuned 😉
I really like your videos and ballet commentaries! It's so much fun watching you two explain and comment ballet variations and full-length ballets. Would love an explanation video for Coppelia because I've never seen this ballet.
11:20 I recently danced one of the evil stepsisters in Cinderella and one time we entered the stage someone in the audience said: „oh no, not them again.“ Not a lot of applause for us there. Keep in mind that it was a performance from a ballet school and we‘re all just doing ballet as a hobby 😂
I've been re-watching the Sleeping Beauty videos my studio sent out when they last performed the ballet in 2019 since we're going to be performing it in October. There is this one part when the jewel fairies from act 3 step on stage where you can just faintly hear a child in the audience yelling: "FAIRIES!" 😂
when my studios company (pre pro company) did coppèlia a few months ago our swanhilda variation we combined both the competition version and the full length ballet version. so we kept the ménage and the opening section from the competition but did the acting and middle section of the full length ballet version. it made it so our swanhildas could do both, the acting and dancing.
That is so cool! Would’ve loved to see it, especially the combo variation 👍🏻😄. Coppelia is so fun to dance, we’re glad you had an opportunity to do so!
I must've been to see Coppelia 13 years ago because my Facebook memories popped this up for me today: "Coppelia: the ballet about how some village boys bully and beat up the local mad inventor, and their girlfriends break and enter his house and the zany madness that follows. the third act has nothing to do with anything."
woaaa I’m familiar with the first ‘competition’ style coppelia variation, but had no idea they changed the original to that-something more suited for competitions like yagp. I thought the YAGP version was taken from the og ballet. seeing the OG one with more acting was really cool!!! and thanks for explaining during the variation☺️ you guys shared some really insightful comments so thank you💕 Like always, amazing job guys ❤️
Aww we’re so glad you got to learn something new! The og one really captures the character of Swanhilda 💕🙌🏻. Glad you enjoyed this video, and thank you for being here!
Would absolutely love to see a full analysis of this beautiful ballet. I'm currently working on Swanhilda's Wedding Variation from Act 3 and would love your insight 💕🩰
Thank you very much! 💕💕💕 Please, make a full ballet commentary👑 P.S.: The pronunciation of the surname "Osipova" is more correct on the first syllable according to the rules of Russian language❤
Full-length Coppelia analysis would be wonderful! In the meantime, this was a really interesting analysis of the two versions of the variation, which I hadn't realised were so different. Are most variations that different when adapted for competitions, or is this one unusual?
Great question! No, most variations are the same in competitions as in the full length ballet, with the exception of Swanhilda 🤪💕. Thanks so much for watching!
The Coppelia (doll) variation isn’t usually performed for competitions, but it is a hilarious part of the full length ballet! Thanks so much for watching, we’re glad you had fun 😁😁💕
Splendido! Grazie!
Anyway, I barely recognized the competition variation from my favorite that I know and love from the Royal Ballet recording with Leane Benjamin. Also interesting that for once you chose the Bolshoi version, not the Royal which is easy to find the full recording of here on TH-cam. Even the Bolshoi version is quite different choreographically than what I'm used to.
Please do a full commentary/exploration for Coppelia! Also, could you link the 2 videos you used in the description? Also, also, new subscriber here, are you guys sisters? Friends? I know you teach but do you also dance? We'd love to see videos of that!
But you ARE our favourite ballet nerds... I also feel completely qualified to judge ballet competitions now: Big jumps? ✅ Fancy kicks? ✅ Speedy footwork? ✅ Turn fast and doesn't fall over? ✅ Do a little bit of acting? ✅ Do I, the judge, have tea? ✅ If all the above are satisfied, clearly that dancer wins. Perfect!
I LOVE that you featured a Brazilian ballerina like me. Note how even Mayara is in her extensions and jumps.I ended going to Bolshoi Academy but my training at the homeland helped me a lot because Academia Brasileira is a lot like Bolshoi: big, bold, grande and most importantly both legs are equally flexible, turns and jumps are as even as possible and the flair! 🇧🇷🇵🇹🩰obrigada e спасибо 🙏🏻

Thanks for the correction! 🙌🏻✨ We’re glad you enjoyed the video… stay tuned for a full Coppelia Analysis ☺️
Please do a Coppelia Analysis !!! That would be amazing! ❤ I love those videos
Hehe thanks for your input! Glad you love this series ✨🙌🏻❤️
1:39 Tchaikovsky, Tchaikovsky did not compose coppelia, can anyone tell me who composed it?
This was fun. Is there a similar comparison of the first dance of Coppelia (the doll) ?
The Coppelia (doll) variation isn’t usually performed for competitions, but it is a hilarious part of the full length ballet! Thanks so much for watching, we’re glad you had fun 😁😁💕

Splendido! Grazie!
We loved reading your thoughts on this! Mayara and Natalia are both beautiful 🤩. Thanks for your input, and thanks for watching! 💕✨☺️
Uhm……what’s so eccentric about using an umbrella on a sunny day? We Filipinos do that all the time. 😂😂
Did you ever talk about the pharoahs daughter
Мы как раз недавно ходили на этот балет. Это большой театр, новая сцена. Просто невероятно❤❤❤❤❤
You are so lucky! Sounds like you had a wonderful experience ☺️💕
Leanne Benjamin is one of our fave Swanhildas 💕
Come on girl, notice me. I am a Leo and need to be the center of attention. Notice me! I’m dancing.
Please do a full commentary/exploration for Coppelia!
Also, could you link the 2 videos you used in the description?
Also, also, new subscriber here, are you guys sisters? Friends? I know you teach but do you also dance? We'd love to see videos of that!
Heyyy thanks for joining us! 🥳🥳. Thanks for your requests, maybe we’ll answer those in a future qna… 😎

Much of that choreography done by Mayara would be called "DEMI-CHARACTER", I think.
Good point! Thank you! 😄💕
But you ARE our favourite ballet nerds...
I also feel completely qualified to judge ballet competitions now:
Big jumps? ✅
Fancy kicks? ✅
Speedy footwork? ✅
Turn fast and doesn't fall over? ✅
Do a little bit of acting? ✅
Do I, the judge, have tea? ✅
If all the above are satisfied, clearly that dancer wins. Perfect!
Awww you’re so sweet! Y’all are our fave ballet nerds ✨❤️
That’s exactly it. Go out there with your tea and get right to it! 🧋🤪
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Haven’t heard about Academia Brasileria much, but that’s so cool that they have much in common with the bolshoi 🇧🇷❤️
