about the gharial → What are gharials?
Gharials are a species of Asian crocodile distinguished by their long, thin snout. Crocodilians are a group of reptiles comprising crocodiles, alligators, alligators and more.
Habitat
Gharials live in freshwater river systems, congregating at river bends where the water is deepest. They are not adapted to the ground, so they usually come out of the water only to bask in the sun or nest.
Previously found from Pakistan to Myanmar, the reptiles' distribution area is currently restricted to two countries: India, along the Chambal, Girwa and Son rivers; and Nepal, along the Narayani River.
Appearance and behavior
A common gharial is between 3.6 and 4.6 meters long and has a maximum weight of around 900 kilograms. Gharials regulate their body temperature by sunbathing to stay warm or resting in the shade or water to cool down.
Male gharials have a large growth on their snout called ghara, the Hindi word meaning “pot of mud.” Males use their gharas to vocalize and blow bubbles during mating displays. The animals come together to mate and nest during the dry season, when females lay eggs on sandbanks along stretches of slow-moving water. The eggs incubate for 70 days and the young stay with their mothers for several weeks or even months.

Habitat
Gaviais vivem em sistemas fluviais de água doce, reunindo-se nas curvas de rios onde a água é mais profunda. Não são adaptados para o solo, então, geralmente saem da água apenas para se aquecer ao sol ou nidificar.
Anteriormente encontrados do Paquistão ao Mianmar, a área de distribuição dos répteis atualmente está restrita a dois países: Índia, ao longo dos rios Chambal, Girwa e Son; e Nepal, ao longo do rio Narayani.
Aparência e comportamento
Um gavial comum tem comprimento entre 3,6 e 4,6 metros e peso máximo de cerca de 900 quilos. Os gaviais regulam a temperatura corporal tomando banho de sol para se aquecer ou descansando na sombra ou na água para resfriar.
Gaviais machos apresentam um grande crescimento em seu focinho denominado ghara, a palavra em hindi que significa “pote de lama”. Os machos usam seus gharas para vocalizar e soprar bolhas durante as exibições de acasalamento. Os animais se reúnem para acasalar e fazer ninhos durante a estação seca, quando as fêmeas põem ovos em bancos de areia ao longo de trechos com curso d’água lento. Os ovos incubam por 70 dias e os filhotes ficam com as mães por diversas semanas ou até meses.
