NASA's Kennedy Space Centre - Florida - USA 🇺🇸

  • As we continue the series of movies of our January 2017 road trip we spend day two at the Kennedy Space Centre. We both have followed the space programme closely since childhood. We had already visited the Space Centre a few years earlier but still could not pass up the opportunity of another look. We arrived before the Centre opened and were among the last to leave that evening. There are so many iconic sights to see here, not least the incredible Saturn V and a Space Shuttle. There are many historic exhibits many of which bring back memories of missions that we watched on TV decades ago. Day Two was a good one.

    I lived near Kennedy Space Center when I was a kid. We actually drove from Jacksonville to near the center and parked along the beach to watch the Apollo launch in 1969. Very fond memory of mine. Thanks for sharing!

      The Space Centre is an amazing place and a day is far to short to enjoy it to the full. I remember as a kid watching on a small black and white TV that amazing first step onto the Moon as it happened. Just amazing to see these incredible exhibits and, in places, walk in the footsteps of those giants. Hope you are having a great day.

      Glad you enjoyed it. I had a fall, landing on both knees, onto rock while walking in the UK a few months before. It had seemed to be a lot better by the time of this trip but crawling through this exhibit soon felt a bad idea. Still suddenly feeling my age, in agony and being followed by agile youngsters I did not want to look the geriatric kid holding them up. Ivor had his camera from which there was no escape. I only tried this once!

    I was here in 2011, 2016 and 2019 Remember it well. Nice to see from your prospective. Always amazes me just how big those rockets are! The sounds and the shaking from mission control is amazing isn't it. Ive been lucky enough to see discovery rolling out of the hanger on the way to launch and also watch a space x falcon heavy take off.

    • @IvorsTravels
      @IvorsTravels  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Those visits sound amazing. It was our second visit but we had nothing as exciting as a launch to see. It must be great to be here on such an occasion. I find it incredible how much rocket it took to get those small capsules off the ground and away from the Earth. The fact they were able to complete these missions with the limited technology of the day amazes me. I remember a guide at the Houston Space Centre telling us that there was more computing power in many watches today than in those computers NASA had at the time of the moon landings. Thanks for watching.

      I keep meaning to visit the Leicester Space Centre but have not yet made it. That crawl through would have been fun but a couple of months before I took a fall walking on Stanage Edge. I did a bit of damage to both knees on the rock I landed on. They were OK generally - unless I knelt down. Not thinking I set off through the tunnels and it was agony. Of course with youngsters behind and Ivor and his camera ahead I just had to keep going. I tend to think more now about doing things like this. Age can suddenly catch up with you! We had a great day and still could have spent far longer. Thanks for watching. Robert & Ivor.

      It is sometimes the smaller things that impress. They had the actual bridge that the astronauts walked over to gain access to the capsule atop the Saturn V rocket that was to take the first trip to the Moon. It was amazing to walk on the same structure as those who made the first moon landing just before blasting off on their journey. Great to see all these historic exhibits. Thanks for watching. Now this is one of those places I really wanted to get to when I was last in Orlando...think 2019...but with only a week, just ran out of time. Was going to be going back in 2020, but we all know what came during that time. Just found all those Apollo missions so fascinating and was glued to the tiny 12" B&W TV for that first moon walk!! Really enjoyed this...thanks!!

      @IvorsTravels  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You need a full day to explore here if not longer. I too sat watching that first moon landing on a very small blurry B&W TV. It was amazing all these years later to walk on that same bridge that the astronauts trod as they walked from the gantry to enter the capsule atop the Saturn V. It felt so emotional to be on that bridge walking where they had walked just before climbing into their seats. There was so much history to experience close up. Would go again if I get half a chance.

      It is a great place to visit. The exhibits, especially the Saturn V rocket and the Space Shuttle are amazing. I was still at school when the Moon landings began and remember watching on a very small B&W TV. It was incredible to be here so many years later. Thanks for watching.

      Thanks guys. It is an amazing place and definitely a must see for anyone interested in space exploration. Our second visit and still loads to see. Hope you are both well and Boo has not been overdoing it. It looked a pretty tiring day for Boo at Bodnant.

    Well. I also would have been first in and last out!
    These are the sort of places that I’ll probably only see on film now, so thanks for sharing Ivor. What a place.
    A friend of mine went to a lecture \ talk from Alan Bean a few years back - chatted for a bit afterwards and was awestruck by the guy I wish I had gone with him.
    He has always said that it was incredible to shake the hand of someone who had walked on the moon.
    You must have been almost overwhelmed here Ivor - so much incredible stuff there! Loved this one and the control room part was mesmerising!
    Loved this one.

      Thanks Dave, I think this has to be my most memorable visit to any attraction I’ve ever been to. Even before we got in as the crowds where walking towards the entrance and the American National Anthem started up and everyone just stopped in there tracks turned towards the flag arms over hearts till it had finished, I wondered what was happening for a moment, it was wonderful.
      I choked up a few times as we went around the centre, having always been a great space enthusiast, and to actually be there, especially going into the space shuttle centre, going into a large darkened auditorium and the doors opened revealing the shuttle, it was magical, to me anyway.
      So glad you enjoyed it Dave,
      All the best,
      Ivor

      @@IvorsTravels It would have been to me Ivor
      One of my most vivid memories of anything anywhere, is watching the Apollo 13 live on the BBC as the module moved across into the dark side of the moon. And then was late getting back into contact again, for what seemed like an eternity. And James Burke nearly in tears live.
      Incredible!!
      Hope you're doing ok mate

    We have yet to visit the space center yet, but it's on our list. From your video it looks like an amazing experience. It's crazy what we're capable of. The control room looked like a really cool exhibit. Those rockets were massive. Don't know if I'd care to crawl around through the space station though. You made a full day of it for sure!

      It is definitely worth a visit. Crawling was a bit painful as I had damaged my knees a few months before falling on rocks while walking in the UK. Not having knelt down for some time I had forgotten but soon remembered as I crawled through. Had to keep going though with youngsters behind me and Ivor filming ahead. As so many people are fond of telling me I am not 21 anymore (mores the pity). Thanks for watching.
