Having a VBAC or Vaginal Birth After Cesarean?

  • Is it possible to deliver vaginally after a cesarean? The short answer is YES! In this video, we go over obstacles you may face, risks and benefits of VBAC, whether that is a home birth or hospital delivery. In the past, most physicians would not 'allow' vaginal birth after cesarean, saying "once a cesarean, always a cesarean!" However, evidence now shows that the risks of a repeat cesarean are often more than attempting a vaginal delivery. Because of this, many providers will now allow a trial of labor (TOLAC). But, we are not out of the woods just yet! There still are a lot of obstacles to getting a VBAC, (vaginal birth after cesarean), in our hospitals throughout the United States.
"The risk of uterine rupture during a TOLAC is low-between 0.7% and 0.9%."
"Trial of labor after cesarean delivery (TOLAC) refers to a planned attempt to deliver vaginally by a woman who has had a previous cesarean delivery, regardless of the outcome. This method provides women who desire a vaginal delivery the possibility of achieving that goal-a vaginal birth after cesarean delivery (VBAC). In addition to fulfilling a patient’s preference for vaginal delivery, at an individual level, VBAC is associated with decreased maternal morbidity and a decreased risk of complications in future pregnancies as well as a decrease in the overall cesarean delivery rate at the population level (1-3)." ACOG Practice Bulletin No. 205: Vaginal Birth After Cesarean Delivery
"For many women, VBAC is an option. In fact, research on women who attempt a trial of labor after cesarean (TOLAC) shows that about 60 to 80 percent have a successful vaginal delivery." www.mayoclinic.org/tests-proc...

Creating a space for families to discover our best selves is one of the best parts of being a midwife.

Hi, I have had 3 c section one in 2012, other in 2014 and the last one in 2016, all of them unnecessary, because in my country the doctors are involved with cesarean mafia, I'm 36 years old and I am pregnant now, when the delivery comes it's going to be 4 years of difference from the last c section, could I have a vbac now if all my pregnancy is going healthy till the end?

Hi, according to a midwife I know, you definitely can. She has performed VBAC on women who had more than three c sections. Maybe you can go for a VBAC consultation.
