Some lyrics: 'When night falls She cloaks the world In impenetrable darkness A chill rises From the soil And contaminates the air Suddenly Life has new meaning'
Burzum is a one man band that was extremely influential to what we call “Atmospheric Black Metal”. It’s a subgenre of Black Metal that tends to be a bit slower, has more ambience and sometimes uses keys or acoustic elements to, unsurprisingly, give the music more atmosphere. Other amazing atmospheric black metal bands are drudkh, Ulver, autrest and summoning.
its soooo good. His ambient stuff got me into his heavy stuff. Hlidskalf and his other albums just have a tone that I've almost never seen captured anywhere else.
You should definitely check out A Blaze in the Northern Sky, Under A Funeral Moon, Transilvanian Hunger, and Panzerfaust, highly influential black metal albums from Darkthrone!
Hello from Portugal! First time watching your channel, "De misteriis dom Sathanas" from Mayhem is a song that you must listen to, different but you'll catch the feeling.

Sorry The 3 bands that you name is way of divisions under Burzum ... !! Use your time to listen to 1. class BM as Burzum, Bathory, Darkthrone, Mayhem, old Satyricon and so on .....
@@fumped MGLA is GREAT !! But as an half oldie I still prefer the 1. BM attack by the first 3 albums by Bathory and especially the 2. attack by Burzum and Darkthrone. Hail the hordes and see you in Valhalla:) !
i like how its basically a genre within a genre so many wildly different takes on black metal, so many unique artists and of course, so many people arguing over what black metal is and what bands are actually straying too far lmao, i dont care, i love me some 1st wave and then stuff like Midnight Odyssey and much more, its a rabbit hole
This is a good song. I actually used to have the video at home. When you bought the video (before the internet) you got part of the original video with it in the package. I never sold it and should still have it in storage, somewhere. Also I thought your pronunciation of his name was pretty good.
Varg Vikernes, kind of funny guy. In prison he dressed up in a black garbage bag in protest because they refused him to wear his German WW2 uniform. Weird guy, but he made good music though.
@@bongfuhrer I'm pretty sure he made videos against things like race mixing and he's like pro-segregationist and all that kinda shit. He's not overtly 'hateful' or whatever, but he definitely has some regressive ideas that he's been pretty open about.
Varg is a character to say the least, but his music is fucking great if you can separate art from the artist. Or if you're into that stuff, fair play I guess.
This was my high school song. Nah, it really wasn't. I, too, dug this, tho I'm not usually into (or more correctly: haven't heard much OF) the various "metals" out there (speed, thrash, black, death, etc). Pretty mesmerizing. Kinda swampy, sludgy, if those are right words. "Wolfy," to quote yours. Gotta love the nod to Tolkien! As you know, Plant/Zeppelin honor him as well. I wiki'd this, and dude burned down a church, what?! Mick Jagger was a "starfucker" (From the Stones song "Star Star"), this dude was a Church-burner. Black metal Sabbath? Crazy Rock musicians, lol. I checked the lyrics, and it's apparently about a Female Entity who cloaks the world in impenetrable darkness, which, yup, nicely matches the doomy vibe of the music! Also made me flash on some lines from a great poem from the 19th-century by A.C. Swinburne: ...Pale, beyond porch and portal, Crowned with calm leaves, she stands Who gathers all things mortal With cold immortal hands... From "The Garden of Proserpine" Kinda spooky, huh? 😜 And on THAT macabre note, Happy Thanksgiving, Moosh! (Altho actually I THINK you may have once mentioned being in Canada, which would be a big "Never mind"!)
Personally, Burzum (Varg) is the founder of true black metal. I talk about the idealism of the movement, before everything was just satanism, blasphemy, etc. He was clear that the subgenre had to go against religion and the oppression of their ancient Viking beliefs and that Christianity was taken from them with blood and pain. Finally, I would like to recommend one of the many bands that followed their musical influence, which for me is the best. White Ward - When Gift Becomes Damnation
Bathory released Viking themed black metal in the 1980s and Enslaved often took credit for coining the term "Viking metal". Burzum was just one of several bands at the forefront of using pagan and historical themed black metal.
Burzum is awful. And I'm not even saying this because Varg is a Nazi. You can be an absolute lunatic and still make great Black Metal, like Taake, Marduk, Nokturnal Mortum, or Graveland. OR... you know, you can NOT be a Nazi and still make great Black Metal, like Mayhem, Emperor, Carpathian Forest, Darkthrone, Gorgoroth, early Enslaved and Immortal, the list goes on...
