My 1st vehicle was a 1972 Dodge Tradesman 100 shorty van. It was a full sized van however it wasn't as long as a traditional van.
From the factory it had manual steering, manual brakes and radio delete plate.
I believe it had a 318 cu V8. It was VERY reliable.

Nice survivor, actually looks salvageable at a glance.
Something Americans probably dont realise about Non US car guys is that we cherish and love the craftsmanship and skills that smaller boutique Auto manufacturers and custom shops apply to their goods.
The metal and steelcraft alone in the aftermarket sector is incredible but seeing a custom conversion that isnt loaded down with plastiwood and cheap nastiness does a soul good.
I just sourced a WG Grand Cherokee Limited (MY02) for my daughter, her first American vehicle and she is in love which is amusing to me considering she got out of a late noughties V8 fully loaded Euro luxury Softroader and what grabbed her hard? The Seats :-) Style, design and execution which again demonstrates the craftsmanship.

Purchased one of these from Portsmouth Dodge in NH in 2001.They always had an ad in the Boston Herald. Had the 318 w/OD slow about 16mpg. My first MOPAR, I figured that in 01 the 318 would have been sorted. However something was always going on. Factory wiring melting in dash, O2 sensor failing and the thing barely running, computer died, cruise control never worked right, air bag light would chime when it got above 80 degrees, it seemed always something was acting up. Had it for 16 years and rust started to take it's toll. That van with a shorter wheelbase was also available with a V6 and a non-overdrive transmission. The poor V6 was just screaming on the highway. Was great when the kids were little on long trips.

I have a 77 Dodge conversion van which was converted in Indiana. Bought it from a junkyard in 98 and used it for everything from an RV to a work truck, off road, on road, even lived in it while I built a house. I just keep fixing it. Seventh engine, ninth transmission, ninth rear end. Most of the body has been replaced, quite a bit of the floor. I once tried to figure how many other vehicles parts are on it… I quit counting at 53. Its been in 40 states and has more miles on it than you would believe. It was, for awhile, converted to a floor shift 4 speed.

By the time they get around to doing anything with it, all they will get is whatever the scrap value is. They will have lost the opportunity to have sold the parts back when they would have been desirable.

Technically 1994 was the first year for that nose, but 98 was a bit of a facelift that moved the engine forward and also the dash was updated.

    • @nightshadefern162
      @nightshadefern162 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The 94- 97 nose looks very similar to the later ones, but none of the major parts swap over. 98 had quite a few changes- fuel tank location, axle differences, brake line layout, suspension, etc. I suspect the front end changes were an attempt to comply with federal crash standards (the much larger front bumper is indicative of this). Never liked the 98 up tall dash, the older ones were easier to see out of. The 98 changes were probably the largest one year change done to the van since 78, although 94 did change quite a bit too.

Love these old Dodge conversion vans. My grandad had a 79, 91, and an 01 all done up as much as humanely possible. He bought his 91 for around today's equivalent of $105k when new. People forget how expensive these things were back in the day and how over priced they were. But, they are cool.

Owned two Dodge vans (purchased them new): 1973 B300 tradesman extended van (side/rear door windows), 318, auto, and a 1976 B100 tradesman short version (rear door windows) 318, 4spd O/D manual. Both had only driver & front passenger seats. The 73 was a wonderful van, no problems. The 76 ran great for 30 days, then started acting up. It wasn't until all the emissions 'stuff' was stolen off it, that it returned to running good. Learned about those pesky ballast resistors, and always kept a spare in the glove box...

@My Pronoun is WTF Yeah I also ended up doing that too. I put in an edelbrock 600cfm. It just took some tinkering to get the throttle linkage to work properly since I was going from 2 barrel to 4. Surprisingly not only did I get more power, but better gas mileage too! My theory is that because the engine was breathing much more easily, I didn't have to apply as much throttle while driving.

Hi Steve I had a 97 B2500 with the 318 and it was slow and pretty gutless but it rode good and was a very quiet ride. My son wanted it to travel around camping but went with something else. Sense he didn't want it I drove it for 3-4yrs. It came from Michigan after looking through the paper work and maintenance records. He started to vacuum out the thing and peeled the carpet back and the whole floor pan above the gas tank was paper thin and a couple holes you could throw a cat out of. It had ground effects with a chin spoiler but under all of that was a lot of cancer. Not sure of the coach builder but it was just as luxurious as the one in the video with those same wheels. My son learned a lesson that day when buying a vehicle there can be hidden rigor mortis under that shiny factory paint and conversion strip job. Mine had the Holley throttle body injection not new enough for multiple port. But working on them isn't all that bad I changed intake gasket water pump timing chain and 2 OIL PUMPS (should have went aftermarket instead of OEM) with minimal effort and the oil pan can be pulled without pulling the motor mounts. You do need to know what order to disassemble it or you will work yourself. Mine had a low oil pressure switch that wouldn't let it idle but you could keep it running above idle. Going down the interstate one day dreaming of rainbows and unicorns LOL and cruise set at 70mph without warning the engine seized up. Rolled to the shoulder. I made a decision I was too far from home and the cost of a tow would exceed the value of the rusty old Dodge. I left that pile on the side of the interstate. The state removed about 2 months later. I got a notice from the Highway Patrol in the mail where I could pick up the van. I mailed the signed title to the garage it was at with an explanation of what was wrong. I was trying to give it another life at a new home. Steve with all these van videos you got me thinking I might be able to pick one up fairly cheap with gasoline prices highest in history I believe. Namaste Steve 🙏🏼

We had a Ford equivalent conversion van for 20+ years. It was a great family travel van. And with the 351, it was a surprisingly good tow vehicle. The short distance from the rear axle to the hitch made it very easy to control. No, this one (as were most) was made at Pillette Road in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. The first VIN digit of "2" denotes Canadian assembly. A "1" would be US assembly and "3" is Mexico, and for some makes a "4" is also USA, but sometimes a joint venture agreement. Some earlier ones were made the Missouri Truck facility. Warren typically made pick up trucks and still does. No, this would have had multiport fuel injection the 5.2L (318) V8 in this year. The Pillette Road plant opened in 1974 and closed with the end of the B Series van run in 2003.
Midway Truck and Coach is possibly now Midway Specialty Vehicles, located at 2940 Dexter Drive in Elkhart, IN which is the RV and trailer capital of the country. Just about every trailer and RV manufacturer has some roots/offices/locations there. You can still get upfits like that today in GM vans. They are done through Adrian Steel, American Van, and other upfitters. The truck can be shipped from GM's Wentzville, MO plant direct to upfitters that will install shelving, racks and the like.
That's why, we need the VIN to win: 2B6 for Canadian made incomplete Dodge truck, H for 6,001 to 7,000 pound Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, B1 for B150 van with 1/2 ton rating, 1 for van chassis, Y for 5.2L (318) V8 with multiport fuel injection, 0 is a check digit, Y for 2000 model year, K for Pillette Road, Ontario Canada assembly and the rest is the production sequence.

I had a used late 80s sort of conversion Ram van that had a wooden tv console on the floor between the front leather seats. You wood have to hop over it to get in the back because of the huge dog house! But the large size dog house made it easy to work on the engine. I traded it in on a small down payment for a used 2002 Dodge Ram van conversion hi-top with TV and VCR with only 12,000 miles on it but the dog house was sort of a challenge to pull out and a couple of the spark plugs were hard to get out for a tune up! If you ever had a leaking bypass hose you might have to almost remove the A/C unit because the bracket incapsulated the bypass hose!!!!🤦‍♂️ But we still enjoyed it for the most part traveling on holidays and such! Anyway I always enjoy watching your videos! 💯Thanks!!!!

I spend more time that I care to remember with one-tons of mid 80s thru 1992 vintage. All had 360s. The 92s were new and ran pretty decent. Even more important - the AC and AM/FMs still worked. The small front doors and dog house made getting in or out a bit of an impediment and cramped interior space.

We had a place called Bud Industries in my old neighborhood in Rhode Island. They did mostly handicapped conversions.

That antiquated front end has about a dozen ball joints and ball joint rod ends. What a mess. I know because had to replace most of them on my 2000 conversion.

most certainly a family van, contrary to his suggestion. Everyone had these when I was growing up, my parents had one when I was younger and had a conversion suburban when i was in high school. All that wood and leather and you knew you were cool when you had a VCR and TV LOL

I appreciate your channel even though I couldn't relate to the short wheelbase series. Never connected with that even though I know of the era in the 60's. You seem to really appreciate that and that is all that really matters.
This van was a dime a dozen back in the day and vans of this size were the in thing just like the putrid SUV's and CUV's are today. At least these had a real purpose other than to get people out of minivans and station wagons who really should be buying minivans and station wagons! There was actually craftsmanship in many of these modified/converted vans. Thanks for sharing this with us!

My parents still own and drive occasionally (only 45k) a 97 E150 version of that. It's a rolling living room. I swear they have the same dash gauge clusters and seats as the dodge. Sitting in the driver's seat you couldn't tell them apart.

I've bought and then resold six (6) of these dodge vans, and every one of them had the same issue; Stalling. The resolve ? New fuel pumps. Yes, on all of them. And yes, profits were made on each and every one.

8:14 that pad is in the back because the rear bench electronically folds flat. With both the bench and that extra pad, it make a decent size bed for either camping or power nap.

Our old plastics warehouse was next door to the ladsen conversion office....I remember watching them convert and install into the modern vans....I think they use Mercedes and still new dodge? The company that used to have a secondary warehouse has a home terminal in Auburn Mass. The owner is the man who told me about the classic car dealership and scene up there, but he now lives in downtown Charleston SC.

That 2000 van would have been a sequential multi-FI 5.2 or 5.9. I had that engine in a '97 Grand Cherokee and the 5.9 in a '00 Durango. I can imagine tune-ups in these vans, RIP water pump/bypass hose

Steve great video I enjoy the oddball cars you pick out nobody ever looks at vans in these kind of cars that's for sure I used to have a 1969 Dodge van with a 318 in it it was a camper van it was called a turtle back and it had a stove and a sink and all that in there and somebody stole it about 15 years ago and never found it still to this day don't know where it is I wish I could find it it was a nice van with red and white it was different the only thing that made me so angry the previous owner took out the factory air condition out of it I almost died I'm like why did you do that I would have had it fixed but other than that it was a nice all original van.

Ford used those crap wheels too on the 90s F 150s . Water would be trapped between the stainless cover and the outside of the rim mixing with the corrosive brake dust eventually eating away at the center section until the rim broke off

We found back in 2001 that a mini van was more expensive than the full conversion so we bought the conversion to haul around our new family. Ours is a Ford but the conversion looks just like that Dodge inside.
