(Pack enough batteries to get back out of it, too). 3. Detonate the nuclear bombs behind the missile, propelling it forward at ridiculous velocities. (Basically, use the nukes as fuel.)

There'd be no need for chemical propellants with all their issues; you could probably just use a nuclear reactor to power ships to ferry materials on and off the surface. Even so, a dyson swarm would represent an immense expenditure of resources, though you wouldn't necessarily have to build it all at once of course. As for leaving hyperspace afterward, since higher bands represent more energy, returning to "real" or "normal" space would presumably _give_ you energy, not drain it... maybe you could even convert that into more kinetic energy. I'm wondering if David Weber would add thus to the FTL system should he read it. Because they seem to be operating on the same FTL system so why couldn't Manticore or their enemies develop this tech? In this setting, that's not so and it is possible to go lower. Hell, I have to wonder if normal hyperdrives can go subspace diving and no one just thought to do it before. After all, you're just going up and down planes of existence, and humans were only the first to realize that "basement" levels existed.

I really like how wondefully straightforward and with no BS the author described FTL travel. I could almost see the charts and diagrams displaying the mechanics and limitations. Thus, it became very clear what exactly the human fleet has done once the initial shock of the "impossible stealth ships" has passed. Honestly they were lucky they weren't dealing with a smarter species that would've figured out the mechanics of what was going on long before the end of the skirmish. But I guess, as is the case with any diagram, it is important where you start drawing them. Even I assumed initially that "real" space is the bottom line, and no way to go below it exists. Like the lowest energy level for an electron orbit.

as soon as the first explaination of hyperspace dropped, it was clear where this could go from a combat perspective ... classic opportunistic humans, we get one piece of information and immediately think about exploiting it for gains and combat
Yeah, I was immediately thinking the same thing. "What about lower? Can you go into a lower band to hide from detection? Can you find additional worlds to settle in the lower dimensional bands, that other species wouldn't know about?" Etc.
I like stories like this, where humanity wins, not because they have an overwhelming technological advantage or are by default stronger than other species, but because they are more creative with how they use the technology and science that they have.
All this talk about using alternate dimension got me thinking. If one ship shifts to a higher dimension but stays where it is, then another ship moves to where the first ship once was and stays there, theoretically these ships occupy the same space but in separate dimensions. If that is so, then what would happen if the first ship shifts back? The results would be catastrophic, I'm sure.

There was a PC War game by SSI from 1988 was for 2 people or just 1with the computer playing 1 side, that used the concept of Raider ships using (I think it was called I space to attack ships in R space or normal space as we call it. You built your fleets and put them in a pool of ships, Merchant Pool, Fleet Pool and Escort Pool. In order to attack the raiders or for them to attack your convoys ships they and your escort's needed I and Anti I weapons, R and Anti R were for attack in R /Normal space If your escorts did not have Anti I weapons, well you couldn't fight back and they wrecked your merchant convoy, enough of this and your ships and bases would run out of supplies and couldn't repair damage Just checked and I still have it on my shelf.
I suspect this was published a few years ago, as the Sino-Russian Alliance has since crumbled, making way for a stronger alliance between Russia and India, with France as a third party.
