Great stuff , I would add a few small points , If thats Ok. lots of times I we see pegs that have worn through the pegbox, the string will prevent the proper seating of the peg shaft, no matter how hard you push on the peg head it will not go tight because of the string , when fitting pegs I make sure the small end is just ....immeasurably smaller than where the large end contacts the wood , this applies the force of the turning closer to the peg head vs further away where it can shear the shaft off inside the hole. There a lot going on with the pegbox and pegs , that is critical to player perception and functions that a trip to a quality luthier is recommended if there is no apparent cause such as strings wound wrong, One more tip, is to regularly down tune the fine tuners, and give the pegs a good spin , this helps keep the hole round as humidity cycles tend to move the pegbox rather oval shaped around the holes , ....

    THANK YOU SO MUCH!
I'm just starting to learn violin, and the pegs were just slipping all the time!
I was starting to think that my violin had a problem... But you explained it all so nicely, and it solved my problem. In fact, as obvious as it is, I didn't realize I had to push the peg harder into the wood to make it stop slipping (2nd tip of the video 1:30 )
    Thanks a lot, again.

@rafaelg45 Yes, peg drops will make it harder to turn because it causes the wood to swell, which helps keep the pegs from slipping. You can use a different type of peg compound to help the pegs move smoother. The Hidersine peg compound that comes in a little round tin will help make them turn easier. You also may have to pull out on the peg slightly so that it's not pressed into the peghead so far. Once you get it in tune, you can press on the peg if it is slipping. I hope that helps!

Thank you so much! I am the proud owner of a new violin, but once I got home and tried to tune it, my D peg started slipping. I researched the problem and found that it was because of the dry air (it's winter here). I kept searching for an answer, but couldn't find anything--thank God I found your video! I pushed the peg in a tiny bit, and that solved the problem :-)

TYSM! I am 12 and I got a violin for Christmas yesterday, no idea what I was doing wrong
My sister said she thinks the paper underneath the tail is suppose to be there. I took it put and unfolded the paper and there was the bridge, I put it in and the pegs kept slipping and this video IS VERRRRY useful, thank you!! I did the push and up method

Thanks for your instructions on peg problems. I am a really beginner and don't know anything about the violin. I just bought one today and have a hard time tuning my violin because of the slippage. Prior to watching this video, I thought the peg has to really be pushed through the peg box but its good that I haven't done that. One thing I have problem is that it's hard to turn the pegs. I thought putting the peg drops would loosen it a bit actually it made more harder to turn.

Awesome video, me and my younger brother; who's going for a music major at Dana School of music, were tuning my first violin, and he pushed a little hard forward a backward and tore the string, so we put the extra string on and could not find out why it wouldn't stay in place, after watching this video, I got all the strings in basic G D A E pitch. Thanks so much, now I don't have to worry about paying a luither to tune it... thank God I know my pitches from singing :)

What I did was had gear driven tuners installed for $200. It's worth every penny. They eliminate the need for fine tuners, never slip, and only take just a teeny bit of tuning.

I just take the pegs out and apply rosin all over them, then put them back in. It holds them tight for a few months but then they start slipping again. I think I'm going to buy some of that peg-drop stuff though, because I really like the idea of NOT having to take the pegs out (re-stringing the instrument is like my biggest nightmare lol).

  • @ChrisTalley1

I know exactly what you are talking about. You get used to tuning the fiddle after a while and it's no big deal THEN. (I know it is now.) I know of two good reasons right off the top of my head why they don't use steel tuners as standard on fiddles: weight (because you hold the fiddle with your chin) and sound.

You can purchase geared tuning pegs for fiddles/violins, but they are not standard. They have been around a long time. The old ones attached with screws to the peghead, then they came out with some heavy metal ones that aren't geared and don't require screws. The latest and greatest geared ones are called "Perfection Pegs." They are light-weight plastic, fit like regular pegs, and can be removed with no harm to the scroll. I prefer wood pegs and fine tuners for precision tuning and tone.

Too much moisture can cause the back to grow and force the neck straight ruining your violin so be careful with the wet rope and humidifier. You can also use a little rosin on the peg for slippage. If the peg binds and cracks when tuning, use a little soap rubbed from a dry bar of soap.

@123naruhina I didn't mean you physically couldn't use the cello bow, I meant that you shouldn't. I guess I should have made that clear! Just for fun, I have played my fiddle with all kinds of things instead of bows -- including a toilet plunger. It doesn't make for very good tone, though! I'm glad you're looking for a new store.

  • @ChrisTalley1
    @ChrisTalley1  12 ปีที่แล้ว

You HAVE to push the pegs in. They CAN'T stay by themselves without pressure because it is wood against wood. It is common sense. If the pegs aren't fitted properly, or if you use brute force, you can damage the instrument. If you are worried about damaging your instrument, take it to a violin shop where someone can look at it and help you.
