    Was Tom Izzo out of line for screaming at a freshman?

    • @wild100sQ
      @wild100sQ 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Definitely was out of line. He has no right to talk to a kid like that. Especially when it's not HIS CHILD! Some people parents probably don't even show that kind of emotions to their own kids. Now if the kid decided to strike back or give him the same disrespect, his scholarship could be took away and have no education.... see the difference?

So you are telling me that is the Michigan State University President did the EXACT same thing to Izzo in front of a large crowd of people, or, on this telecast of a national tv game Izzo, his family, and other coaches with be ok with that. Of course they would not be ok with that. Inspite of the fact he is a FRESHMAN he is still an adult man. He could have accomplished the same thing by pulling him from the game and in a soft voice said "Son you are not playing hard and I will not tolerate that. So you can come sit next to me for the rest of the game as my discipline for your lack of hustle." That would have been acceptable and would still have accomplished STRONGLY what Izzo did by yelling and screaming and embarrassing someone, (who is an adult), in front of a crowd of people. It would be called domestic violence if it was found out he did that to his wife or his own son.

    I agree with Rob Parker because it's an easy solution: sit the player down and go to him and tell him he cannot get on the court unless he hustles. Parker was right about the P.J./Spreewell situation... these coaches, for the most part, are sadistic psychotic people who love to prey on young athletic men using power, influence, money, connections, and opportunities in exchange for this type of foolishness. This was great it happened because everyone can see the truth of coaching in general who have no idea how to lead or influence people positively... most coaches (just look at them) are crazy because of the pressure and responsibilities they have, especially at the high school/college level with smaller pay... it's just way too much for them to expect not to lose their minds or cool when the pressure gets to them - it happens but this had more to do with understanding than a mad Izzo... just make sure the player understands but why was he in the game if he doesn't understand?

      lordnate2000 First of all a drill sergeants job is to train soldiers on how to survive and operate in war time situations. That comparison to a sport isn’t just ridiculous it’s borderline disrespectful. Second of all even a drill sergeant could get in trouble in the army if they acted like that.
      To say nothing of a coach who’s job description does not in include being restrained. For fear of getting physical with a college freshman. My point still stands because the ACTION is being judged not the position. If you believe a position gives you permission to act in such a manner you’d have no business being a coach.

You cant discipline your kid like how we got it back then. 90s this was nothing today if you talked to your teenager like this at the grocery store, even if the kid was wrong, the cops would be called. So therefore the question isnt about right or wrong. The focus should be on a change in times. We realized screaming and throwing fits is not effective. Let's say if this kid was a high projected draft pick. You might have hurt his stock.

    I just saw the clip and there was a video talking about this particular incident while showing other clips of him doing the same at other times. The reason that the people who are having a problem with what happened with Henry is mainly due to the appearance of it. Watching the video that was showing several other clips, if you pay attention instead of just focusing on how Tom Izzo looks when he's doing it, you'll see that the players are able to argue back with Izzo. This isn't a typical coach screams at a player and the player has to be silent and just take it. The players are free to voice their input. And what you'll also see if you pay attention is that Tom Izzo does immediately calm down, usually, when he makes whatever point he's trying to make.
    I know the incident with Henry continued in the huddle. But even in the huddle, you see that the team has the kind of relationship that Henry can voice his side. The other players can voice their side when they are trying to get Izzo to calm down. The relationship that Izzo has with his players and what the players feel about the coach/player dynamic is a lot deeper than your typical outside viewer is going to pick up on.
    Now, the look on his face plus the bags under Izzo's eyes aren't helping. And the bags really are making him look crazy. But there's a saying, "what are the optics", or it might be "the optics are everything". But the gist of it is that nowadays people are swayed so easily, and people don't really look beyond how something appears than to look for what actually is happening. Such as the look on Izzo's face. They get that image, and they stop at that. They don't see the things I pointed out like the players are able to yell back. How quickly everyone calms down. How was Izzo the rest of the game? Did he flare up again? I like watching Mich State and I've seen Izzo flare up in a game. But it's hardly ever more than once.
    I didn't see this game, but I haven't heard talk of Izzo not putting the player back in the game. How many times would you expect a coach who had that kind of thing happen in a team huddle where the player could voice his side like that, take it out on a player by not putting them back in the game?

    I absolutely agree with Rob. When players have to hold a coach back from a player, there's something wrong. The coach should be the example. He did more than just yell and show passion at Henry, he was trying to intimidate him. Why the closed fists? Why did it continue in the huddle? The coach lost it and didn't look good on the school.
