Why can’t we have music like this today….real talent. Thanks Harri for reminding us how good Union Gap is. 😊

    • @ChuckHackney
      @ChuckHackney 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Because either the talent is not there like times past, musical powers that be want let voices and music like this be heard anymore and tastes have changed to hip hop, rap, Mariah Carey like runs or making one note sound like 5,000 notes, or trying to hit power notes at the expense of melody, tune and emotion. This is what I think. What say you???,❤❤❤❤

Saw an interview on TH-cam of Gary telling how they got their Civil War uniforms. The group said they wanted uniforms to stand out more. They went to a costume shop in San Diego CA. and saw the uniform and loved the look. He asked the shop owner if he would sell him 5 of them. The shop owner gave Gary a price and he almost fell over. His next move was pure genius. He rented one of the suits and drove down to Mexico and found a tailor who said he could make five uniforms with different ranks, for a very good price. The rest is history, literally. 🙃

One of the greatest voices of all time. He gets overlooked. I think the content of his lyrics. .that weren't his...just the song lyrics.
He can sing anything. Just a pure gift. Love love love his voice. Too many people react to the song lyrics. They are not autobiographical. Lol! They are songs his producer would bring to him. But THAT VOICE.
Just heard him perform and he is 80. Still a beautiful voice if you could hear him over a huge audience singing with him!

I agree as we just saw him a few months back with a Happy Together Tour with several other acts from that era and he was Fantastic.
Most people as you wrote make a knee jerk decision that what he sang about were his thought and how he lived his life and they're so wrong.
So nice to see some one else point this out and hopefully enlighten others. Jerry Fuller his producer wrote his biggest hits.

This song always brings me to tears. It's not just about the love between a man and a woman, but it can apply to those we have lost along the way. This song was popular when I was 13. My dad died when I was 8 and while he was alive he loved violin music and played the violin. So any song with strings always makes me think of him.

Another classic, Daniel Volk! This takes me back to elementary school during the summer of '68 and hearing Gary Puckett and the Union Gap on my AM radio. We had just moved to N. VA after my dad's tour in Viet Nam and he was stationed at the Pentagon. 1968: a tumultuos year in our nation's history and Gary Puckett's voice takes me back there every time. Like the way you roll. The Union Gap featuring Gary Puckett) was an American pop rock group active in the late 1960s. The group, formed by Gary Puckett, Gary "Mutha" Withem, Dwight Bement, Kerry Chater and Paul Wheatbread, who eventually named it The Union Gap, had its biggest hits with "Woman, Woman", "Young Girl", "Lady Willpower", "Over You", "Don't Give In to Him", and "This Girl Is a Woman Now". The members featured costumes that were based on the Union Army uniforms worn during the American Civil War.

I remember my cousin bringing this Album when she babysat me and my sister. This was what? 1968? 9? I was a mere whisper. 5 or 6 years old. There is another song on that Album that made me cry even at 5 or 6. The song is called “Home” it’s about a soldiers of the Vietnam war. Dressing the way they did was very popular in the 60s. Take a look at other singing groups of the 60s. I think even the Beatles wore similar outfits back then.

Gary Puckett & the Union Gap added a classy dimension to late '60s pop. Another American group that did the same with their late '60s hits was the Classics IV, featuring Dennis Yost. They had three superb hits -- "Spooky," "Stormy," and "Traces" -- that captured a melodic sound and somewhat mysterious mood. Those songs would make excellent choices for reaction sometime.

The line when he gets to the prison in my mind gets to me every time! THAT and when his voice drops DOWN when he says OVER YOU. If listen to it again you'll notice how it drops down and he sounds almost as if he's straining his voice and sadness when he says the words OVER YOU. It's done in a very mournful way in comparison to the way he sings the other lyrics. That part of the song just seems to contain more of his emotions if that makes sense, I hope that it does. At least that's how I feel about it when I listen to it. I grew up listening to this because this was in my brother's collection of records. I'm so glad that you discovered him and are starting to introduce him to everybody here. Personally, I think he has a very wonderful, beautiful and a unique voice. #NYGenXBIKERLady

His voice was as perfect life as it was later when he recorded albums.
Saw him again in about 1980 and he was still as handsome and his voice as perfect as when I first saw him. Also, a nice guy. he interacted with his audience, was friendly and genuine - Which is rare in a star.

It doesn't matter if you are a guy or a gal, if you have just one romance that you are really into and it suddenly goes wrong, you never truly forget or get over it. Memories have a funny way of creeping back out of that dank dungeon you thought you had consigned them to.

Back in the late 60s and early 70s Gary and the band were really big. So many hits, sometimes its hard to understand why some artists are never forgotten, yet others are. I have not heard this song in over 50 years yet its as great now. When I hear this I think of Paul Revere and the Raiders , The Grassroots and Tommy James and the Shondells. All of them were early pioneers of Rock N Roll. I heard Gary sing recently and he still sounds great. Why oh why can't they make music like this anymore? Oh yea now I remember its because the music business lacks an abundance of real talent. Computers make the music, and auto tune the vocals. Plus the songwriting sucks. DID I MISS ANYTHING? Back in the 1960's, many musical groups wore some type of "outfit" to stand out... The Union Gap wore uniforms that were a take on the USA Military uniforms of The Union (The North...) during the US Civil war between the States... 1861-65.

The uniforms/costumes that the Union Gap wore were a nod to their name. Somebody must have been a Civil War buff. The north forces were known as the Union while the Southern forces were known as the Rebels.

I grew up listening to all this classic music from the 60's. Gary Puckett & The Union Gap had a lot of great songs. You've already done a few of their big hits. Will suggest "Lady Willpower", "Don't Give In To Him, "This Girl Is A Woman Now" & "Let's Give Adam & Eve Another Chance". This music brings back good memories for me.

It’s to go with their name “union” North vs. South. But really they took their name from Union Gap a town in the Northeast. Washington or Oregon state. Wonderful singer. It’s a shame they are not in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. ❤

Their style of dress is connected to their bands name,Union Gap.Their suits look like Union soldiers uniforms.

I believe Dwight Bement is playing the oboe. The Oboe is the dominant instrument even over the strings.

Was my favorite group back then tho Over You really didn't care for. The reason was Young Girl, Woman Woman and Lady Willpower were so much better. Gary is still performing has a great voice. Actually a good man does many charity concerts.

You need to do "Kiss Me Goodbye", Gary Puckett's cover of Pet Clark's song.

Love Gary Puckett. Saw him at a small town festival in the 90s, he is kind of tiny IRL but his voice was still pitch perfect 30 years after the hits. The Union Gap is a tribute to the Union army of the Civil War, I guess the Union soldiers missed out on the powder blue and went for the more traditional cobalt blue.

@@thelowe6393 the use of "actually" infers an error. Both our statements are true, He is from Union Gap AND the band realized the value of a gimmick to separate them from the pack as TV appearances were increasing due to shows like American Bandstand switching to color.

I would recommend two songs written by or Co-written by Gary Could I and a simple man growing up in San Diego I was a five year old boy when in 1968 Gary Puckett and the union gap were all over the charts They may sound like a merseyside group. Producer Jerry Fuller wrote and produced three of their biggest hits Young Girl over you, and Lady willpower They were formed in San Diego. Not merseyside.
