How to Create a Class App on Google Slides

- This tutorial shows step by step how to create a Class App on Google Slides, which you can then publish to the web and share a link with your students and their families. Thanks for watching!
*It is hard to see at the end what I am adding to the URL but it is &rm=minimal.This removes the bar at the bottom of the screen in present mode which allows people to click through the slides.*

Sarah !! Oh I want to say you are one of the best people who demonstrated a difficult concept for me to understand in a slow and clear manner. Clear, concise, orderly, and something a person like myself who has no experience doing this could actually follow and use. Now I do have one question. After this is created and I want to change the homework assignments or edit the important links etc. then how do I do that? Do I go back to the slides? could you tell me or help me with that? I am so new with everything on line. So thats my scare now is how do I make changes? I appreciate any help you can give me....
You can update anything you need to. The link will always take parents to the most up to date version.

Great Job! My app is finished. When I save it to my home screen on my iPhone, the app picture was the first slide of my app, but after opening the app to look at it, the app button on my phone is now just a white box. Any suggestions to fix this?

However I need a little more help once I published it all seemed to work well however when i went to tap home which is linked back to the 1st slide the instead of going home i opens up the gray slide show menu , like the editors verizon. did I publish it wrong? because i don't want it to advance like a slide show... help a sister out please!
I know that this is from a year ago and I used your tutorial to built my app last year. I needed a refresher so I watched it again. I finished my slide presentation and then published to the web. I tried testing it on my cell phone and the presentation will open perfectly to the home page, but each time I click on a "Button" it opens a new tab with that new slide view. I had 10 tabs open when I was done testing. Everything transitioned perfectly, but it opened a new tab each time. This did not happen on my laptop, only my cell phone. Is there a way to fix this? Thank you.

This was great - but I am having an issue saving it on my own home screen... I am on an iphone xr and I use chrome.. I can not get on safari? I do not see the Add to home screen option? Help! :-)

What stops people from swiping left on the screen to go to the next page? I made one and installed it on my phone and I accidentally swiped and it went to the next page.
when its showing the parents how to bookmark the app and it says view the website. What website are they viewing?? sorry im new to this and a tiny bit confused
It's technically just the link to the google slide not a website persay

From what I understand from the video as soon as you edit the content the parents will be able to see the changes automatically. If I have a homework page and I want to update it for the following week but don’t want parents to see the content until a future date, how can I do that? Thinking through this I was curious if I would just duplicate the homework page and fill in the next week’s assignments then when I’m ready for parents to see it link it to the tile on the first page instead of the page that’s currently linked. Does that make sense? Is that how you would do it? Thanks! 😊
That’s a great question and one I hadn’t thought about. I was planning to just edit the HW slide but I love the idea of creating an new HW slide each week and altering the link!
How would change the homework each week? If you change it on the google slide would that automatically appear in the app for the students??
Thank you so much for this video! I am having trouble, because using a Mac or on phones if you scroll the slides will advance, I skipped all but the 1st slide, however, that only works for the 1st one. If I go to a different page it will still advance

You’ll need to use font meme text generator. In the speaker notes I wrote down what font was used.

This is awesome. Thank you. This may sound dumb but... I’m assuming that since I have created everything in google slides that when I go to change or update something in the slides, it will automatically update/change in the parent app as well. Is this correct?

Question, every time you do an edit on the google slides after publishing the website will it reflect those changes as well? Just curious because of the homework tab. Btw loved the tutorial!
Yes it auto updates when you make changes! So awesome! To test it out you can make a change, refresh your Google Slides presentation, then look at your published url site.
Do you have to have a google account to access link?
QUESTION: Do parents have to have a GOOGLE ACCOUNT to access the APP? I was hoping this wouldn't be the case since I've created it with my school drive.
I tried accessing it through my phone with my personal google drive, but it says I need to request permission. Any advice?
No they do not. When you publish to the web you make it viewable in a web browser like Safari or Chrome.
My wife found this so helpful and made an app. However today when she is goes to use it after some edits it does not allow movement between slides and is only going to the second slide. Any idea why?
Is there a way to make the “app” always open up to slide 1 (the home page)? Mine always opens to a random slide.
Make sure you are on the first slide when you add it to your home screen. I am planning to add that to my directions page.
Also, can they still access the link for your email if the transparent shape is in front of it?
My email is not a link. If you want yours to open as a link you would need to either move it I. Front of the transparent cover or put a small transparent rectangle over top of the text/transparent cover and link that small shape to your email address.
This is great but when I have it published, it shows the "slides" buttons on the bottom. Does anyone know why this is? Is it just because it's me trying to open it on my computer/phone? How do I make it so that they can't hit on that?
Hello! Thank you for this great tutorial! I am not sure if I did something wrong, but when I publish after adding &rm=minimal, you can still scroll through all the slides without necessarily clicking the buttons. So, even though they cant click to other slides, the mouse allows them to scroll through them. Is it supposed to do that, or did I mess up somewhere? Than you so much!

Yes. Since it’s viewed in a web browser it works on any device with internet capability
Can we copy and paste the rectangle from one slide to the next slide that is already transparent and has a link to simply edit it with the new link?
Yep! You absolutely can! Just edit the link for the new slide :)
When I type in the &rm=minimal it doesn’t get rid of the slides to the left like yours does.
Are you publishing to the web? View in a browser not in slides.
How do you keep the slide show from advancing on its own? Google Slides doesn't seem to have a "no advancement" option.

Sarah, this is wonderful! Thank you! Is there a way to link your syllabus back to the slide in the presentation? Does it work to have a "home" button on the Google Doc to take them back to the Slides?
You can add a link on your syllabus back to the app, just type the words "Back to App" highlight the text, and right click to add a link. Use your tinyurl as the link.
@@SarahCampbell0110 Ahhh. I think that is what I was missing: the Google Doc with a link back to the App needs to be the tinyurl link. That is helpful. Sarah, are you on the Bitmoji Craze FB group? Yes you can publish to the web and create your tiny url any time. The slides update automatically. Your link will always take parents to the most current one.

After you create the tiny url you can share that in many ways - REMIND, email, put it on your syllabus, share at open house, etc

I did this but when others try to put it on their device, it says they need access and then the email cannot be delivered. Any chance you could help me with this?
Did you publish to the web? That's the link you want to use....not the one when you click share.
Fantastic tutorial...thank you so much. Everything on my end is working except putting it on my phone. I followed your instructions, opened in Safari, clicked the box with the arrow going up, then scrolled down looking for "add to home screen." I don't have that option? I have: copy, add to reading list, add bookmark, find on page, markup, print, save to dropbox, save to Pinterest. That is it?? Please help.
Do you have "Edit Actions"? If you click that it gives you more options.
Make sure you are typing the tiny url into a safari browser

Classroom.google.com will take them to the homepage and they can select your class
Love my app! My only question is about how to make it so when the kids bookmark it on their phone (with the directions for bookmarking section open) they bookmark the home page, not the directions on how to bookmark it page. Is there a way to do this? Thanks SO much!!
Yep just make sure they are on the first slide when they hit “add to home screen”
@@SarahCampbell0110 One more question, when I published this, all my slides were locked for click-advancing, but you could still swipe to advance. My app on the home page shows me the slide and the arrow to go to next slide. How do i get rid of that. I can change slides off of it
Sounds like you may not have added &rm=minimal to your publish url.
Hi! Thank you for making this video! I love it! I am also having a problem with the slides advancing on me. I published to the web. I added &rm=minimal at the end of my link and it's still advancing. I linked each transparent rectangle to each slide (the one it is on). Am I missing something or doing something wrong? Thanks! :)
I would double check that all your transparent boxes cover the entire slide and that they are the very front layer
Make sure your transparent cover is linked to the current slide.
Please Help! I created my app but for some reason when you view it it starts with Slide 4 instead of Slide 1. When I click present it starts with Slide 1 in Google Slides, it is just when you view on phone or desk top it is out of order.

It doesn't tell me what the problem is, it just says "unable to create Tiny URL". Also, when I scroll it advances my slides, is there a way around that? Thank you again! You can avoid the scroll forward by skipping all
Slides except the first. File>Skip Slide.
Not sure about the tinyurl. Are you using the publish to the web link? You can’t just grab the link at the top of the browser when you are in slides.
@@SarahCampbell0110 I skipped the other slides, so when you open up the URL (which I got to work) it doesn't move to the next slide now; but, when you click a link to go to the other slides, they will allow you to swipe though. Do you have any thoughts on how to prevent that? Thank you so much again!
@@margarettsosie7014 make sure your blank screen is over the top of each page. Then put the home button on top of that blank screen/page

@@febbieallen1389 I figured it out. Copy and Paste the Tiny.url in the search bar of Safari. It will give you the box with the arrow and the choice to save it to your home screen :)

Mine is doing the same. The slides will also advance if you click in the black space around it. Not sure how to fix this. Anyone know how to prevent the auto advance and click advance in the surrounding black space?
Great presentation. But i was not able to see the instructions to give parents how to bookmark in the cellphone. Any suggestions where I could find them?
For iPhone/iPad:
1. View the website in Safari web browser.
2. On the bottom of your screen, select the box with an arrow pointing up.
3. Scroll down to “Add to Home Screen”
4. Hit “Add”
5. You’re ready to go!
For Android:
1. View the website in a web browser.
2. In the top right corner, select the three dots.
3. Select “Add to Home Screen”
4. Hit “Add”
5. You’re ready to go!
I might have missed it, but are you able to have your phone number be a link so it will open up the calling app(?) on someone's phone?
No I am not sure how to do that.
