"Ignorance had babies having baby and kids selling crack." And man's strength is in his hair as in Samson in the Bible. He's battling the things that are keeping us down as a people.
Jeru is one of my favorite emcees of all time. He’s part of The Gang Starr Foundation. This song was based on Jeru’s super hero concept with Ignorance and the others being his super villains.
the idea behind the song is ignorance, jealousy, envy and the others are what plaque our hoods. He said he got struck with knowledge of self so he is helping others fight those traits that plaque us as African Americans. So a metaphor yes but also very literal in what he is saying he is metaphorically making those traits people but it's the downfall of us as a people often times. Listen to part two you'll get a better picture. Back then we had so many trying to teach and educate the youth so props to you for being willing to check it out we need more young brothers like you. Peace to you and yours bro
Mannnnnn, you gotta do "The Sun Rises In The East". That's Jeru The Damaja's debut album. This song is on there. "Come Clean" is also on there. That album is a CLASSIC
For more Jeru, here are some bangers. "Black Cowboy", "D' Original", "Ain't the Devil Happy", "Physical Stamina", "I'm The Man", "Speak your clout", "Da Bitches", " My Mind Spray", "Jungle Music" , "Return of the Crooklyn Dodgers", "1,2 Pass it", "You can't stop the Prophet", "Invasion", "Revenge of the Prophet". These songs are fire beats with KRS-level knowledge, which made many people call Jeru, "The Scientist"
It's Pronounced "Jay-Roo" and he is from East NY Brooklyn hence the Album title "The Sun Rises in the East"....That album was bonkers and and deserves a reaction video... "Come Clean" was one of the hardest tracks in the 90's...The hair cut reference was taken from the biblical story of Samson and Delilah....when Samsons hair was cut he lost all his powers..
Aloha from the island of Hawai'i to you Brother Ahmad! 🤙🏽 Jeru is the man! His first two albums are exclusively produced by DJ Premier and are classics! Ain't the Devil Happy and My Mind Spray are my two favorite tracks of his. Keep on doing your thing Ahmad, much love Brother. Peace ✌🏽️🤙🏽
Jeru was the last of the consciousness rap he was holding it down his first and second album was true hiphop classic see he was giving you a choice in hiphop bravado rap or consciousness rap 💪🏾
The first time I heard Jeru was on Gangstarr's song "I'm the Man", that was FIRE. He's also on another hot compilation "Crooklyn Dodgers '95 The Return of....."
Wrath of the Math is up there as one of my favorite hip hop albums from the '90s. Just revisited this for the first time recently, and you can hear how it laid the foundation for Wrath. Me or the Papes and Whatever are classic tracks.
hey Ahmad, you came close to the concept of the song. -------- To clarify, we talk of ignorance, envy, deciet and so on as traits or metaphors when dealing with human behavior. -------- Jeru made them into villainous characters, like in a Batman flick and as the Prophet he had to battle them as they spead their brand of evil throughout the ghettos of America. ----- The concpet of this song was so clvera nd original, I can understand why it took you a minute to graps what was going on. Great reaction. Keep em coming.
For real! Been playing that track heavily for over 25 years now! I reference it constantly, especially the last verse: "Niggas are in a state of nothingness Hopelessness, lifelessness If you're in range I hope you hear this And try to change this, cause it's disastrous Who gets the most loot, who gets bust? Dollar bill y'all, is the god we trust The days blow by like dust Even men of steel rust We're out here acting ridiculous When, only we can save us Mentally enslave us, for little or nothing kill our neighbors Animalistic, caniballistic, behavior Look to the sky for your savior He won't save ya, he didn't save your forefathers Why bother, brothers? you must discover The power of self, know thyself, or find thyself Hating thyself, killing thyself While he collects the wealth that you sit back and murder for Ain't the devil happy." Aloha Brother Ohm 🤙🏽✌🏽️
I can't believe you haven't done "Come Clean." CLASSIC TRACK! Tbh, you should do the whole album. His first 2albums were produced by DJ Premier. This is also one of the guys that Biggie was dissing on "Kick In The Door." That line... "Son, I'm surprised you run with them, I think they got cum in em, cause they nothing but dicks", Biggie was actually talking to DJ Premier. Premier said he had to stop the tape 😂 Pete Rock got a remix to "Can't Stop The Prophet" that slaps harder than this.
Hey Ahmad, Love your channel and how you get into the lyrics and story telling on these classic songs. ------ That's what you had to do back in the day. A&R talent folks would force you to come up with something unique to distinguish you from the rest of the other rappers. However, its was Primo who was the A&R plus the producer for Jeru. ------- They pushed each other to come up with some classics joints.
This entire album is a masterpiece!!! Preemo in his prime!!!! Jeru only downfall was dropping when Biggie and Nas dropped and he was super conscious and ahead of his time as far as his lyrical content…The Sun Rises in the East deserves a whole album review on your channel!!!!
Please check out "Return of Crooklyn Dodgers" with Chubb Rock, OC and Jeru the Damaja on the bars, Masta Ace on the chorus amd Premier on the beat. If you do that you should also do the original Crooklyn Dodgers that has Special Ed, Buckshot and Masta Ace on the rhymes and Q-Tip on the beats. Both fire songs.
Oh man. Jeru is one of the real ones. You need to check out Come Clean. The beat and lyrics on that song are what got me into Jeru. You won't be disappointed.
I remember I heard this sample for the first time when I bought my first ever vinyl LP. Sample is from The Crusaders "Chain Reaction" album. Can't remember the track rn

Jungle Music is a must listen. In fact, you should listen to Jeru’s first two albums. Both of which were entirely produced by DJ Premier.
Dope pick

All those names he mentions are metophors for the things in this world that stop us from being the best versions of ourselves.

I love Preemo but the Pete Rock version of this song is infinitely better.
Premier beats on this album are amazing
You must react to return of the crooklyn dodgers with him.
Jeru was the last of the consciousness rap he was holding it down his first and second album was true hiphop classic see he was giving you a choice in hiphop bravado rap or consciousness rap 💪🏾

O.C. - “Born 2 live” off another 90’s classic “Word…life”

Yessuh Young brutha, now you're getting into the core of Hip-hop. Jeru was a BEAST! Keep elevating that knowledge!
"Secret Wars Part 1 & 2" by The Last Emperor also has a good story line.
This song totally went over your head 😂😂.. it’s about the state of the black community…
You could look at it from a spiritual perspective too- instead of dealing with people we deal with forces at work through people
@@gibranmcdonald9853 what’s going on in our community is definitely spiritual… we are both on to something…🤔
