    You got me so excited for this journey! I've been transitioning for about 4 months now and I have about 3 inches of new growth!! When I get really frustrated I just look in the mirror an see my little sprouting curls and I get excited about why I'm going natural in the first place! Thanks Amina !! And for all my transitioners out there - DONT give up! You'll have awesome curly beautiful hair! You got this!

      Update I big chopped twice and my hair now is super curly and springy it's pasty collar bone all most bra strap! My hair has been the healthiest in its natural state! I know some of your family members may be criticizing you but DONT PUT THE CREAMY CRACK ON YOUR HEAD! Enjoy the journey as much as you can and if you still want long hair that's easy to manage , protective style it! Wife, braids etc, and once you come back with the beautiful curls TRUST and believe those same family members will try and act brand new and want natural hair too! Good luck ladies! If you need some natural hair advice you can dm me on insta @absolutely_adwoa! Always down to help!!

      Similar I'm transitioning and when i ask my mom to braid my hair one time (bc idk how) she was being over dramatic and now wants to relaxed my hair but she's also pregnant so idk could just be hormones cause she didn't mentioned it last time when we was at a hair store for conditioner and stuff 😂😂😂

    • @AminaMarie
      @AminaMarie  7 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      +ItsKaiii +Joshiyonna Hayes I recommend getting as much info together as you can about transitioning and have an action plan to present to mom. Her main concern is probably not wanting to spend too much time on hair maintenance but if you show her what styles you're ready to do and that you're ready to put in some of the work to take care of it, that might make her feel a little easier 😊 It does take a little time to master at first but ultimately it's worth it because your hair will be healthy, growing and able to do things you never realized it could 💕 Good luck!

      Why do you let your mother touch your hair at the age of 14? My mother was not allowed since she almost torn out my hair by brushing it when I was 7 years old and at that time I did not even know that I had curls thanks to the constant brushing and bad ingredients in my hair products.

    • @Bellydance941
      @Bellydance941 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      You legally have the right to not allow your mom to touch your hair. Your 14. Start speaking up fr your self and get disrespectful if you Have to and tell your mom exactly what you told us. Your hair is your crown.
      Ps: its relaxer. Perms make curly hair relaxer makes straight

    I live in Miami. It never gets cold. And I work in a professional environment, so going natural was a challenge without being able to use heat and without doing a big chop. So the first year, I just roller set it every night and wore it up. Year 2-3 I wore curly extensions that matched my own curl pattern. I’m now into year 4 and my hair is down my back. It’s been a VERY long journey, but my hair has never been so long, and I swear by castor oil, it really makes my hair 2x faster! It may feel like forever, but it’s worth it in the end.

      +Mya Guzman the best way to start getting your curls back is to stop putting heat on it and continue to moisturize and slowly trim the heat damage away. Check out my most recent video to see the process I went through to get my curls back 😊

      Mya Guzman I had my first relaxer at 6, went natural at age 29. After 4 years of protective styles and no heat, I have waist length 4b curls. So the best way to get your curls back is to leave it alone. You’re very young, and I wish I started this journey when I was your age. If you start now, you won’t believe how long your hair will grow by the end of high school! But until then, just let it grow! Good luck!

    Great video! I am currently transitioning from heat damage and boy this stuff is NOT as easy as I thought it would be. I am going to hold on and stay confident tho. I am still working to find cute curly hair styles. My hair is not retaining any length I recently got braids and wish I didn't because my hair looks shorter now 😞.

    • @AminaMarie
      @AminaMarie  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Ebony Orr give your hair a bit of a break from the braids and keep your hair moisturized! You'll get the hang of it just keep trying! I got really impatient with my hair but once I started playing with flexi rods and perm rods it got a lot better!

But I transitioned for a year and a half so when I big shopped I Have collar bone length natural hair, so luckily it's not supper short stretched out. But the shrinkage is killing me lol, I'm not used to my hair being above my shoulders

    • @ppomodori
      @ppomodori 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Hey on the plus side you can start again and grow it out completely natural. With transitioning some parts that are so damaged may not revert back so it's better to chop it off anyway :)

    • @sydneym.8306
      @sydneym.8306 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Kiara Medina when you transition you do cut the hair off all. People don't transition thinking the hair will revert back, they do it because they don't want the dramatic experience of chopping it all off. Because if you have always had longer hair it's kinda tragic to do it that way, and takes a minute to get used to. But when you transition you slowly trim the damaged hair off. Still wish i had seen this video right before I finally chopped so then maybe I would've stuck the transitioning phase out a little longer lol

    • @ppomodori
      @ppomodori 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sydney M. Everyone's different and it probably depends on the damage a person has. I didn't have to big chop since during my transitioning phase my curls reverted back without cutting the damage after straightening my hair once/ twice a week for over a year.

  • @iaishajohnson
    @iaishajohnson ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I big chopped and started with one inch of hair in 2015 and I was natural for almost 8 years and decided to get one relaxer and cut my hair into a bob. One month later I missed my fluffy hair and decided I wasn’t getting a second relaxer. I refuse to go bald again so this transition journey is new for me. I’m doing ok with treating all my hair as if it’s natural because I don’t remember any other way to style. I’m only 3mths post relaxer and I plan on transitioning for as long as I can hold out this time. I’ve been wearing braid outs because I’m already used to not using flat irons so I blow dry and then do a braid out. I’m going to experiment with flexi rods next. My bob has already grown 2.5 inches in 3 months so I’m doing something right. I’m getting my ends trimmed next but my bob still looks clean cut no see through ends so I’ve retained my length. I’m excited to be on this new journey.

    I have dyed the shiiit out of my hair. Bleach, color, you name it ive done it. I’ve had it permanently straightened as well since I hated my hair being wavy/curly. As I’ve gotten older it’s gotten curlier, but I’ve decided to not dye or bleach my hair, use twist outs to help train it, and actually condition my hair. I’m excited!

    I was going 4 months without straightening my hair and my hair was getting healthier. I then recently straightened it just cuz I wanted to go my progress. After I washed my hair out , my hair became DEAD 😭😢 I am so so hurt right now, I regret straightening my hair soooo much. I worked so hard and now it's like I have to start over and I feel like it looks worse than it ever did 😢😢😢😢

    This was the greatest natural hair care video that's on TH-cam especially for someone like myself that's transitioning thank you so much for the information on how to care for your natural hair and that it doesn't have to be costly.I haven't been natural since I was 13 yrs old and now I'm 50 I currently have my hair in braids and I'm very excited about going natural but I would be lying if I said that I'm not nervous because its been so long since I was natural will I be able to handle this journey or do I really want to do this,no matter how I feel it is something that I am going to do and watching your video encouraged me to embrace it Thank You so much.

      Take your time! Making the decision to go natural in the first place is a huge step, the big chop definitely isn’t for everyone so if you want to grow your curls out and trim the damage away as you go, it’s still the same destination 😊

    I’m on day 5 of my transitioning journey and God it feels goooood. Freed & relieved! I went to a beauty salon specialized in natural hair & they gave my hair so much love. They really encouraged me & gave me all info I needed. My next appointment is in 1 month. I didn’t big chop, they were super understanding. They told me I could be fully natural in 6 months cos my hair is not like super damaged. And the lady gave me her personal phone number in case I have any questions or I feel like giving up.. I’m literally so so happy. ❤️

    So glad i found this video because I've gotten a texturizer in my hair in October of 2016 and for my eighth grade prom I had to straighten it because I didn't have time to do any box braids, and that caused some major damaged because they had to keep going over and over with the curling iron. I would've chopped it all off but I was and still am afraid of it not looking right on me because everybody can't rock short hair. I know I'm ranting but I'm gonna def try this

    First of all, this was an awesome video! I wanted to ask a couple of questions because I'm transitioning, and I am on the STRUGGLE bus! Lol. My biggest struggle is maintaining my styles in between my wash days. What are your tips on maintaining your hair while working out? Also, what was your daily moisture routine while you transitioned?

    • @AminaMarie
      @AminaMarie  8 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      Thank you so much, I'm glad it helped! Maintaining styles is definitely a huge bullet point and my best advice is to pineapple! Whether your hair is short or long, I recommend doing 2 pineapples at night and wrapping your hair with a scarf around the sides so you don't crush your curls. I use 2 because when I was doing 1 big pony tail at the top of my head it stretched out my bottom curls a little too much and the style wouldn't hold as long, but with one at the top and another towards the middle I could stretch a style for at the very least one week. At the gym I'm not afraid to look like a human pineapple if it means preserving a great hairstyle so I will do at least one big pony at the top of my head and a thick head band to keep any hair away from my face/neck.
      As for moisture I would lightly oil my hands and lightly pull it down bigger sections of hair, focusing specifically on the ends every other day or so. Hope that helps!

    • @along58
      @along58 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Camila Guapa Hi lady! Sure thing! Transitioning is when someone is going from having a relaxer or chemically processed hair, to wearing their hair in it's natural state. Initially, I used relaxers to keep my hair straight, and now I have transitioned to wearing my naturally curly hair. I hope this helps love!

    Good tips. Thanks for sharing. Suggestion....perhaps instead of rotating out products when they are not working the same anymore, try using a clarifying shampoo. I'm currently listening to The Science of Black Hair and this is one of the items that she speaks to directly. The lack of response in the hair may be just a result of a bit of product build-up! Thanks again for the video.

    • @AminaMarie

      +DaShan Williams I've actually had a discussion about this and that is GREAT advice! We don't realize how much buildup we don't get out with our regular shampoo alone at times so a little extra kick with a clarifying masque or adding ACV into the mix once a month or every other month is a great alternative solution.
