Ocean Flicker | After Effects Tutorial

Here's how to animate ocean flicker in After Effects in a style reminiscing of impressionist paintings. You can easily change the look of the water by changing the stroke color or stroke width of the zig zag layers. No plugins needed. Enjoy!

But I have few doubts, it would be great if you can resolve those for me.
1. First I am not able to mask the highlight layer because it was created with pen tool
2. What we need to do if we can't this flickers in wave form . For now in this video it is in oval form

Hey! Let me try to help you out:
1) you should be able to make a mask on a shape layer (like the zig zag layer created with Pen Tool) as long as you remember to toggle on the "Tool Creates Mask" button in the top. Then you can create a mask with Pen Tool on top of the zig zag layer.
2) I'm not sure exactly what you mean here. Can you elaborate on what you mean with wave form and oval form?

@@MathiasLynge_ what I meant is shape of dash converted into oval shape, but generally wave shapes are curvy, how we can achieve that?
Also what If we need to slow down the speed, which expression we need to change?

@@teenadoodles Well that sounds like a different look than what I'm going for here. This tutorial was meant for making these oval dots, so you'll have to find a different tutorial for a different look.
In regards to speed, try to change the numbers in the two times expression (offset and phase) until the movement looks slower.

I’m a little confused on how you duplicate the pre comp and drag in back in the timeline?
I’ve duplicated my pre comp but not sure what you mean by drag the lower one back in the timeline 🥲

For some reason my mask also isn’t working. When I duplicate my zig zag layer and put it at the top of my pre comp.
When I use the pen tool for the mask it adds a white stroke. But if I delete that stroke it deletes my highlights too.
It’s on the same shape layer. Sorry for all the questions!!!
