there's something about the juxtaposition of the self-isolation and self-destruction of this song to the harmony of everyone singing it together. love it
We talk a lot about how it feels to hear as as the audience, but can you imagine how that'd feel to hear as the band? I'm sure they know how many people love their songs, but big numbers are hard to conceptualize. Can you imagine a crowd of people, all screaming a song you wrote in unison? Lyrics memorized perfectly, full of passion. I can't imagine how awestriking that would be.
Theres something poetic about a whole crowd singing "I am drowning, there is no sign of land You are coming down with me, hand in unlovable hand" Because the whole song is mutually assured destruction Someone better with words than i could probably explain why, how its reflective of todays society, how people have become like crabs in a bucket, but as it is, its rather fitting with the lyrics i think. A whole crowd of people, screaming angry, lonely lyrics, together. But maybe thats just me, who knows. Edit: hi angel!
At the Haw River Ballroom show in 2019 a similar situation happened. John came out for an encore song, said something beautifully poetic about giving everything you can but knowing when you can't go any further even if people want you to, and then dimmed the lights and had us all sing No Children together because he couldn't. It was beautiful, one of the best experiences of my life
god this is just so magical in a wonderfully terrible way. what is it about this song????? and the incredible magic of a crowd singing in unison.... my god

No, you're definitely onto something here.

Noice! Can't blame the guy for thinking it wouldn't be a great "sing along" track, but he underestimates just how shitty life is! 😂
I feel more human after listening to this, you feel me?
I wish I was there... I hope it stays dark forever
I hope the worst isn't over.
I hope you blink before I do.
I hope I never get sober.

Shit why am I crying
Because it's finally safe now
Humanity does that :)

Better than hearing John Darnielle attempt to sing this exclusively out of his left nostril.
