You shorted the power supply out and it gave you a red light how is that a problem with the power supply? It did what it was supposed to it protected itself

The 12V pin inside the plug only produces voltage when there is a load applied to the 5V pin. You can simply ground the 5V pin (use a screwdriver to ground the center pin to the round connector around it) and the power supply will switch on the green light (if it's not otherwise broken or bad) and the other pin will start putting out 12V. Obviously, don't bend the pins!
Now, my problem appears to be that the little fan inside isn't running even when I force the power supply to activate.... which makes me wonder if that's why my 360 slim isn't powering on (I cannot find any other fault with the motherboard or ports on the motherboard). Unfortunately, the darn security torx bit screws under the rubber feet on the power supply have blocked me from getting into it to check the fan! Arghhh!
So if this comment saves anyone from downloading and watching this 30+ minute video, you are welcome! LOL! (video is too darned long for the end result)

Just to follow up, I give up on the tamper-proof torx screws on bottom of the PSU. Just too much trouble (and will take too long to order a set of these torx bits... money/time better spent on a new PSU imo).
Noticed that when I ground the 5V pin, the PSU light goes from Orange to Green BUT the little fan unit inside the PSU doesn't blow any air AND I just voltage tested the other pin (while light is green and 5V pin is grounded) and it's still not putting out any voltage. Ergo, even though all Internet wisdom says Orange light on PSU means the PSU is ok and in stand-by mode, I'm going to order a new PSU to try on this XBox 360 Slim.
I've gone over the motherboard with a magnifying glass, nothing appears burnt or blown anywhere all solder points look good I went ahead and re-flowed the main board with a heat gun (as per directions found elsewhere) checked every port for bent pins or other damage and still it does nothing but sound a weak "Ding" when I attempt to power it on with this PSU. I'm of the opinion my PSU is simply not switching on the 12V side of the plug when the 5V pin is grounded, possibly a bad fan motor inside of it shorting the 12V side.... idk.
My experience with traditional computer PSU's is that all the fans are 12V and if any of them lock up and fail they will instantly trip the circuit breaker inside the PSU and the computer will not turn on as a result... so my conclusion here seems logical.
Will update when I get a new PSU in to test. Probably won't make any difference and I'll end up junking the whole mess but this is my last worthwhile idea to fix the darned thing after reading and trying everything else on the internet. LOL!

Not true. If you short the inside of the 5V+ side that's not enough for "power good" but that's enough to turn on the 5V- side. I still haven't figured out how to get a power good but I know shorting the 5V- side while the 5V+ side is shorted gives a power bad (red)

after watching this i disassembled my phat 360 power supply to find huge dust balls clogging the fan and stopping it from spinning. Cleaned it out and voila all fixed no more red light and everything is working fine hooray!!!!

first of all fhank you for the video it was very informative unfortunately my problem may have started as a dust problem but i cleaned everything with air but it helped only once or twice then i saw smoke and i shut it off when i opened the power supply and saw one of the capacitors or diodes i dont know the difference, that was becoming red and smokey so i disconnected it . so my question to you is how to identify what it is and if i can replace it? by the way i see the bad part on your video and i can point it out if you would like me to send you send you a picture.
    i really appreciate your help

Well upload the image somewhere and put it's link here. If it is a single component failure then changing it would fix the problem. But sometimes its a problem in a group of components that only show up in one of them...its hard to tell the difference from a picture.

Interesting, I repaired one of these yesterday that had a couple of faulty Caps.
There are four wires from the PSU to the Xbox +5v, +12v, GND, & Control (Sense). When the PSU is first turned on it is in Standby mode and only has the +5v line active, when you turn on the Xbox the Sense line goes high (+5v) which activates a MOSFET (switch) in the PSU and brings the +12v line active, the LED turns Red, at this point the 12v fan also starts spinning to keep things cool.

Nice work. Better than many of the other available videos on "debugging" this power supply.
Thanks for taking the time to make it.
It would be MUCH more helpful if you would provide a labeled diagram of the connector, showing which contact connects with which color wire, and the name/function of each wire and contact.
The diagram doesn't have to be perfect...hand-drawn is fine...but with the camera and the lighting, it was impossible to see what you were pointing to with the "power sense" and "power good" contacts, and to be certain which color was associated with the "sense" vs. "good", and understand whether you were shorting to ground the "blue" wire or the "white" wire when you finally got the power supply to display the red LED. Also whether one of the wires didn't actually connect to a contact...for example, which contact on the connector does the white wire go to?
A clear and complete diagram of the connector also makes it MUCH easier to visualize the connections after watching the video...we don't have to keep going back and forth on the video to "make sure" of each connection and its function while we're trying to take measurements on the connector at the same time.

For the XBox One power supply brick test: short both inside pins, do not touch the inside, or outside of the barrels! Light should change, fan comes on. Then test for 12v on the inside of both barrels while still shorting the pins only! If you short out the power supply, unplug it, wait for the reset, then try again.

There's no tachometer from the fan for the power supply to know whether or not it is spinning. If it won't spin it won't cool so it will overheat and that is what leads to the red light.
