    There's a lot of things I left out of this video because I didn't want it to be too long or technical, so please leave any questions about it below!
    also leave some suggestions below, if I decide to use it as a video I WILL credit you so if you want a shoutout think of something creative I could make.

    I have just got a 1760s longcase grandfather clock running, so this is quite interesting. The mechanism that connects the pendulum to the clock mechanism so that it advances one pendulum swing at a time is called the escapement. Also, for fine adjustment of time, then rather than changing the length of the pendulum, it's possible to add smaller weights to raise the centre of gravity (normally you start with the clock running on the slow side).
    In any event, well done. I expected a Lego clock to be much larger.

    • @-abigail
      @-abigail 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      For hour/minute hands I think only a 1:12 reduction is needed, because the minute hand should rotate once per hour and the hour hand should rotate once every twelve hours.

    • @levifzephyr
      @levifzephyr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exceptional 1:60 reduction... Especially if you consider that it should be 1:12 ratio (one turn of big arrow means 1/12 of small arrow... You're not making a chronograph with seconds and minutes, but a clock with minutes and hours !!)

    Fascinating to watch... I'm learning to code and just finished my first 'analogue' clock, a software clock but with moving digital hands, and a chronograph... It's interesting to see you figuring out how to move both hands and how the timing relate to each other, but then have to do something that just isn't a problem with software, having to produce it mechanically. Amazing little machine you made.

    A pendulum clock is a clock that uses a pendulum, a swinging weight, as its timekeeping element. The advantage of a pendulum for timekeeping is that it is a harmonic oscillator: It swings back and forth in a precise time interval dependent on its length, and resists swinging at other rates. From its invention in 1656 by Christiaan Huygens, inspired by Galileo Galilei, until the 1930s, the pendulum clock was the world's most precise timekeeper, accounting for its widespread use.

  • @Xtopher98
    @Xtopher98 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Speaking as someone who works on brass mechanical clocks. Did you mean to have a second hand and an hour hand rather than the normal minute hand and hour hand? You won’t be able to read this clock like a normal clock face since your hands don’t match the standard. You only need a 12:1 reduction rather than your 60:1 to get the correct behavior from your clock. Great job getting the mechanism in such a small space!

    • @puzzLEGO
      @puzzLEGO  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, originally I meant for it to have a minute and hour hand, but the hour hand would only rotate 1/12 around the clock before it stops. Also, I would have to bring the total gear ratio from the escapement to the display up to 1:720 which probably wouldn’t fit. Hope it wasn’t too disappointing

    Seems to be much better design than my unfinished lego pendulum clock. With lego battery box weight it ran 15 minutes with 30 second accuracy. Longer lasting clock didn't run smoothly due to friction of lego parts. It was many years ago and didn't have camera then so there is no TH-cam clip about it. Three hand clock is more complex thing than you first think. :-)

    Years. I have tried for years. And you managed to show me exactly where I was going wrong: I was over thinking it. I was over complicating the escapement!
