I read everyone’s interpretations … the most repeated three were all about 1- how Midori either broke the cycle for your 2- Toru got into depression just like his best friends 3- or maybe he commute suicide himself now we all read this book , let’s think it from murakamis PoV , in this whole book I feel like every sentence had deeper meaning but he didn’t vary the timeline of spoken sentences . I think toru called midori in the real time when he said goodbye to reiko … cause after giving the girl he loved a happy funeral he finally accepted the reality and goodbye to reiko meant goodbye to Naoko .. as we all know midori was a lil angry at him for leaving for three weeks to unknown places … so she unaware of torus circumstances askes him simply where is he now ( or maybe she was aware and asked about his state of mind ) in both the cases it sets toru into a reality questionare where he asks himself . Yea where am I??? And all he sees is people who he doesn’t know a place who he doesn’t acknowledge as a place . So where was he ?? Now that naoko had left him ?? Where was he with midori ? Now that there’s nothing to sort out between naoko and him …

That's a very well drawn perspective. That is likely to happen, as the analogies used by Murakami are also similar.
