Another awesome video, loved the pushup parts especially with your dogs trying to "help" you lol. I would stick to a Tesla for now, but nice to see as the EV charging infrastructure matures and expand, more EVs are able to do long distance trips.
Had two Telsa's now have two Rivians and have to say, Rivian is so much better. Yes the autopilot is years behind, but actually driving the car is more fun. The blue with the long range wheels look amazing!
Having owned 3 Teslas and 2 Rivians, I must say your review is spot on. The deal breaker is FSD. Both have their own strengths, but I don’t think I will ever go back to any vehicle without FSD options.
I live 40 minutes from park entrance off highway120, I own a Tesla, we are the center of 4 mountain passes that go east to Nevada 1. Ebbits pass Hwy 4 into Reno, Carson Pass hwy 88 into Tahoe, Tioga pass hwy 120 into Yosemite then 395 and Sonora pass to 395, They just put in 8 Super chargers in Sonora ca which covers all 4 passes, Sonora was great strategic location that cover 4 mountain passes..
I took my Rivian R1T to Yosemite before you could use the Tesla charging network and before that new Rivian Adventure Network in Yosemite, and didn't have a problem finding charging.
i did 1200 miles road trip in my y, twice. first time, through central valley up the north coast anc back down. second was all around arizona. it was great. chargers everywhere i went. i even went dirt road on arizona mountains.
The only reason why I don't buy a Rivian is because they don't have anything close to the Tesla fsd convenience, especially considering it is road trips focused brand.
So sorry to hear about Simba's cancer. Our beagle developed thyroid cancer at about 2 years old. Fortunately, we were able to treat him with chemo at a nearby veterinary oncologist. He tolerated it with no side effects and lived another 8 years. I hope you're able to do something similar for Simba. He seems like such a sweetie. And what a cool trip for him to go on!! I've always thought the Rivian R1S was a really nice looking EV, just way out of my price range. I wonder if you'd have had less stress incorporating CCS charging stations into your journey as well (other than the Rivian specific stop), instead of just trying to use Tesla superchargers. I know the Tesla chargers are typically much more reliable, but it looked like you still had issues with them. With the odd location of the Rivian charge port causing issues at Tesla superchargers, I'm surprised no one has come up with a NACS extension cable for situations like that, so non-Teslas using superchargers wouldn't have to take up 2 spaces. Thanks for sharing your trip experience! Looking forward to your R1S review.
Aww. Simba had thyroid too that spread to the lungs. His chemo stopped working a few months ago. I feel like CCS is more stressful due to the unreliability. Thanks for the love hope Badger the beagle is in doggie heaven having a blast!
@@EverydayChris - Oh, I'm so sorry to hear Simba's chemo stopped working. That's sometimes the way of things with cancer, though. I hope the chemo gave him a good amount of extra time with you, though. I know my beagle buddy, Max, is definitely in doggie heaven, playing with his fluffy toy and chasing all the bigger dogs around the trees. He'd love to play with Simba when he gets there.
It was extremely fun when there were a few people driving Rivian in the beginning. We actually high beam each other to say Hi. Now, there are too many. 😂
Appreciate the road trip content, looks like it was a very fun trip! Will be doing a 10 day trip up to the Hoh Rainforest in my Model Y camper in December. Love those EV road trips they're so fantastic. I've been flirting with the idea of getting an R1S for my next vehicle...but I think I'll probably wait for a Cybervan or something similar from Tesla.
so, hows the comfort for gen 2 Rivian r1s as compared to Model x? I was confused at the end since you mentioned that r1s was like lexus but you move a lot?
Love the Rivian! Looks like a LOT of planning is required - IDK if I have the patience for that one. I have a question though, what are the extension cords for? Where is it okay to plug into 120VAC on a road trip?
I’ve had the Model X Plaid and the R1S Quad Motor for about a year now, and when it comes to road trips, I definitely prefer the R1S. It’s way roomier and comfier for long drives. The Model X is nice, but it can feel a bit cramped after a while-the front passenger seat has less legroom, and the back seats feel tight and aren’t the best in the six-seater version. The Autopilot and FSD features in the Model X are pretty cool, but since I love driving, I barely use them. Charging hasn’t been an issue for either vehicle, not an issue anymore in CA. Overall, both are great, but I tend to lean toward the R1S for driving, while my wife is a bigger fan of the Model X.
Fun video, if a little overly dramatic with the charging anxiety. The dogs were a plus, but for the sake of everyone on the road, please don't drive with a dog in your lap. They can be unpredictable and we need you with full control over the steering wheel.
Why are you such a drama queen about charging with the Rivian? I’ve done 2 coast to coast trips with the R1S (including Yosemite) and it was no big deal. In fact when I was going through California I was glad I didn’t need the Tesla charger as they were always full. I was always able to pull up to the CCS (different brands) and Rivian chargers with no issues. Moab was the 1 (and only) place I was glad to use the Tesla charger.
You're in the park you can't leave your car for 2 or 3 hours hiking eating or doing other park things. Maybe charge up prior to entering park so you'll have enough power to tool around in the park and make it back to a DC fast charger or go to rv parking with power
You can’t leave your car to charge for 3+ hours? Having level 2 in a park with trails makes perfect sense. Go on your multi hour hike and come back in 2+ hrs.
Great video and hilarious! For long range road trips I would go with the Tesla because there are tesla supercharger everywhere so I would worry less when it comes to charging my model Y. With the Rivian even though it has access to Tesla's superchargers it seems that's a hit and miss when charging the R1 on your video. So that would be very stressful. Hopefully when my wife's R2 arrives in 2026 all of that will change. I do love the Riviians because they are more spacious, more luxurious and fit our outdoor style better but we bought a MDY 2 years because of its charging network. Love your videos and the dogs. Hopefully Simba will be okay. Oh and I think you are missing 1 push up! lol just kidding!
I hike all the time, and hikers and outdoor enthusiasts are friendly, it's just the norm. No need to be an EV owner to be friendly. Problem solved with charging at Tesla chargers with the R2.
Hi Chris! quick question. I just ordered my Tesla it hasn’t arrived so I’ve been watching all your videos to prep while I wait for it to be ready in a few days. I ordered the 2024 model y long range awd 20” induction wheels. I have not been able to find info specific to my question regarding charging. I live in an apartment that has a generic EV charging station in my garage that I can use for free charging. Can I use that charging type regularly or will it hurt my battery and do I need to find a Tesla charging station to charge (and only occasionally using my apartment generic charger)? I only anticipate using my car on the weekends since half the week I work from home and the other half I work within walking distance from my office. I’m trying to figure out what kind of charging schedule I need and what will be my primary source of charging. Or do I need to get a Tesla charging chord and ask my apartment about changing spaces to a place where I can plug into a Tesla charger? If you have specific video that covers this please let me know… I’ve just been running through all your videos and haven’t seen anything that specifically answers my question. Thanks!
Regular J1772 chargers will charge your car just fine. The Tesla will determine the speed and you really can’t go faster than the car can handle. Enjoy your free charging. 2019 M3 LR owner. Best wishes.
@@CarrascoFarms thank you! I’m loving the Tesla community.. everybody is so helpful!❤️😃 can I just let the battery run down during the week while not in use? So nice not to be forced to use an adapter everytime you use a non tesla charger in europe (Just seen the charge port on your teslas are different than in europe)
For Tesla chargers, did you use the built in integration or the Tesla app? If you use the Tesla app, it's supposed to be a lot more reliable... But have to click on the start button before the buggy Rivian integration kicks in...
Can you clarify why the path from Traver super charger to Gilroy which is only 144 miles and you need to charge ? Your the range on the vehicle showed 290 miles. ??

They are l2 chargers available for any EV and in the summer, Yosemite gets packed and I had a hard time finding an available charger. Its the first time in a long time I had range anxiety despite owning EVs for 7 years
The amount of room in the Rivian and 80% charge range is ideal for long road trip (112 more miles). However charging reliability and software bugs (lack of features at this point) are disappointing. Would love to see more vids on Rivian from you. In addition, I thought the ride would be more luxurious like Lucid which has a great ride and range. Lucid just needs Tesla charging and I might go there as another vehicle.
Rivian looks nice but this video perfectly illustrated why I'll likely still get a Tesla next year as my first EV. The convenience of Teslas charging network just makes the experience seem worry and stress free.
just drove 5,000+ miles around the country for my photography with my 2 aussies in a new Model Y and thank god for Tesla chargers everywhere! Looking at the other chargers out there, it's sad as they are mostly not working or really slow/low kwh chargers. People with e Machs and Rivians are really upset while traveling since we just zoom by in the Teslas after sitting for 20 minutes. Love the Y by the way! Sure is cheap to travel than spending all of that $ on gas. thanks for all of your videos! Heading up to mammoth lakes (next to yosemite) this weekend too and we know we'll be ok around there since there are lots of new chargers there too.
Dude stop being dramatic about using a Tesla charger, you really are making it more dramatic than it is. The chargers are there to use and you are using it thats how it works. Its more stressful if one is not available for you not if one is not available for someone else.
Of course the autopilot is better in Tesla. I would have to say that Rivian has more info gages and a funner UIX, but is harder to figure out at first, coming from Tesla.
Clearly you are making your comment without seeing the Rivian software 1st hand. I own both a M3 and an R1S. Rivian software is so much better than Tesla with more meaningful and better updates. Navigation, music, drive mode graphics are way superior in the Rivian.
I own a M3 and a Rivian R1S and I have driven my Rivian across Country twice to each coast. I have only driven my Tesla to day trips. I would take the Rivian over the Tesla any day for long road trips. It’s more comfortable, it has a longer range, it charges quicker and keeps the charging curve longer. Tesla charger are always full in California.
Rivian needs to change their chart port location if they want to use the Superchargers. Tesla needs to stop allowing Rivian tomuse the superchargers unless they change. This will lead to fist fights at the superchargers.
Loved making this video! What do you guys think? Rivian or Tesla for long road trips?

I would take the Rivian over the Tesla any day for long road trips. It’s more comfortable, it has a longer range, it charges quicker and keeps the charging curve longer. Tesla charger are always full in California.
Seriously, there is nothing like a tesla! Nothing.
I like Rivian but I wouldn’t buy them with no FSD. FSD is a must.
Rivian needs to change their chart port location if they want to use the Superchargers. Tesla needs to stop allowing Rivian tomuse the superchargers unless they change. This will lead to fist fights at the superchargers.
yeah man. the one I went to was a high profile location. Luckily I was able to move. They should be moving it to the correct place for the R2!
