Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 2 new videos every week! Wednesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

We live about 20 miles from Ava, “your neck of the woods”. I was deeply touched by your honesty and transparency today. Gardeners and farmers are exhausted … just trying to keep things alive, and harvests are questionable at best. I hope that your farm received some of the rain that came through today. Prayers for you, your family, your gardens, and animals… and all our Farmers!

Growing up, my dad was a farmer and we basically grew everything we ate, other than the meat dad got from hunting and fishing. It is devastating when there were weather issues that meant a small harvest at most or when animals had accidents or health problems. So much work goes into farming but there are no guarantees of a harvest even when everything looks so good almost to the end. Tornados, hail and floods can wipe it all out in an instant. Folks who don't realize that benefit so much from a video like this one. Your garden looked so beautiful and everything seemed great until you shared todays news. My heart breaks for you and all the farmers around the globe who are having such a difficult time and no relief in sight. Thankfully, we can trust that The Lord knows our needs and will provide. He is the rock we stand on and I pray he will bless you and your family. May he bring rain to all the areas that need it and provide a second harvest. Thank you for sharing your lives with us. You are such a blessing!

30+ yrs of homesteading has taught me that if every year were the same, and every crop could be counted on to produce, it would be so easy that everyone would be doing it. We are in S. Central OK, where we are in exceptional drought, and on day 42 of 100+ temps; the rain just keeps missing us. Not the first year like this, and likely not the last; altho, the number of dead seed we planted this year is perplexing. We use drip irrigation, too, and years like this it runs 12-24 hours, every other day. Tho many crops didn't make at all, the ones we can keep alive, we will, hoping for fall harvests. Meanwhile, we continue to pray for rain and coolers temps for all of us. Good luck!

I sure wished I could make things better for you! I have to be honest, I watch your video's, and often they keep my hopes up because, everything that you are going through, we have been there for the last couple of years. So, maybe this is how we encourage each other. Our fall garden last year, and spring garden this year. failed.. What tomatoes I got on the vines were swiftly taken by the critters. I said well, the blessing is that we are here in Florida, and we can start all over. I got my tomatoes restarted and I probably would have put them in the ground this weekend...Except...what the squirrels didn't pull up, the Sandhill Cranes did. And what was left from there, the leaf miners got.. Well, what shall we do, give up? I always remind myself that the rain will return, and even when our grass looked like yours, I thanked God for the rain because I knew He would send it. When God says you are an overcomer, you are. Sometimes I think, when everything has failed, the difference is- we still get up, put on our britches, and go mow the dead grass!

I have got to give it up for the year. Everything is dwindling away, and it is too far gone. What makes this so bad is that we know the shortages at the stores are going to be hitting and we needed to have our own food storage. Prayers is all we have now, and we know God will see us through. I understand your distrust of the government. But if you think about it the reason WHY the government isn't doing anything about climate change is because they're paid by the coal and oil industries so they can keep making profit while we pump the atmosphere with so much CO2. think about it. how many MILLIONS OF YEARS did it take to make all that coal and oil? Now imagine ALL of those dead bodies (cuz that's what oil is compressed dead organic matter) rotting all at once in 100 years. Its maddening. The government isn't all powerful. The real conspiracy is the corporations. And guess who else is buying up the small farms??? corporations. And guess who's trying to force the population to increase for their endless labor supply (because if you force people to have kids they don't want they end up unable to care for them. Poverty leads to desperation.Desperation leads to crime. Crime leads to prison. And prison is the ONLY legal form of slave labor in the USA). Follow the money. Not the politicians. THANK YOU! Thank you Kevin and Sara for being real! I am in South Texas and the heat killed my garden 2 months ago. We have nothing to harvest, not 1 squash, bean, corn, melon, etc.. I feel for you and your garden, but you are not alone. Every garden around here is like that. We are praying for rain. All I can do is buy can goods and frozen foods to keep food in our home.

Many of our farmers and homesteaders are having so much trouble with heat and lack of rain. My heart goes out to all. Here in Michigan we've had lack of rain, heat and Japanese beetles. I've been watering by hand twice a day, taking 4-5 hours. We finally invested in some soaker hoses that has saved me a lot of time. Our fruit trees are struggling also. When I planned and planted my garden, people told me that the shade from the neighbors pine trees would inhibit growth of my plants. Turned out to be a Godsend. The cabbage and squash love it in this heat. Because we were enlarging the garden and had many setbacks such as snow in May, heat, finances to purchase extra soil etc, I was 3-4 weeks behind getting everything planted. My tomatoes are slowly just coming on. And the Abe Lincolns are absolutely delicious! So are the sweetheart cherry tomatoes. I'm just praying the green bean tunnel plants blossom and produce. I lost most of my onions due to operator error. But I learned what not to do. Thank you for sharing real life on the homestead. We've been dreaming if 5-10 acres, but rethinking that at 70 maybe the acre we have is all we can handle.

Scks -I've thought about investing in big shade clothes. I have covered tomatoes with sheets some. All over been able to can from my garden is potatoes. Oh gosh... devastating to see after all the hard work you guys have put in!
If you can/have access to, get some 50% white shade cloth and put over your garden. It will save the tomatoes & may help some of your other veggies. We have to grow ours like this now as in parts of South Australia as we have summers like you are experiencing now. (Fun fact- South Australia is the driest state on the world's driest inhabited continent) Also we have found mulch around plants keeps the ground much cooler and keeps moisture locked in better. (better than landscape fabric for hot/dry climates)
I hope for you guys this is a one off drought and you don't get these again in future.
Hoping you get some beautiful steady rain to regenerate all the plants and soil soon!

I harvested from the garden at 6 pm so I wouldn't feel like I was having heat stroke. we haven't had any zucchini this year yet. we get lots of flowers but then no fruit from the flowering s. believe me I am praying for rain for y'all. I noticed when I watered my garden that it only grew a certain amount. After a rain it would bounce in growth. I found out that any other water from any other source does not have optimum ph. Collecting rainwater in a large tank and watering with it during a dry summer can make a big difference. The correct ph will help everything from fighting disease to taste of the produce.
Shading the black mesh with straw or hay may reduce the heat surrounding the plants. I've noticed on my mesh that it is much hotter where the mesh is directly exposed to sunlight than when tomatoes and other plants are shading it.
I used very clean 5 gal buckets with an extremely small hole drilled a side near the bottom and placed the hole within 1-2 inches from the trunk of the tree. The water would travel to the root from there. My trees always done well with that technique. I had the buckets so it kept my costs down

Suggestions for your cattle: haul hay in on semi's. Maybe go in with someone else or several different farmers. Unfortunately the drought is severe in Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas also so the producers know this and are charging accordingly.
Good new is Arkansas in the northern regions have recently got rain so they maybe able to produce some hay. If so take advantage of it. The shipping cost of hay right now is high.
Secondly, plant rye and/or wheat this fall. Hopefully you'll get rain later to grow it.
Really surprised about your okra. It's originally an African crop so the heat shouldn't bother it that much.
As for the rest of the garden I'd salvage what I could and start over with the tomatoes and beans. I'm not sure about the growing time you have left for other crops.
Looking at the radar today you should have received rain. Hope you did.
I'm in the southern part of Arkansas. Canadian geese are on the move. I'm hoping that this may suggest an earlier fall than normal. Cooler weather and rain might come earlier than average. Let's all hope, pray and cross our fingers and toes.

Am in North Arkansas and we have bore the brunt of the worst of the dry weather. I report daily precipitation at my point and we picked up a little over three inches of rain the closing days of July. That was after only picking up 1.40" of rain since May 24 until July 29. The more mountainous areas got more rain to the south and so the better hay producing areas are still in poor shape for now.

Love you two and your honesty about farming, and food preservation - My Husband and I started out 44 years ago on a 100 yr. old farmstead on 10 Ac. Like you, we started a greenhouse, sold bedding plants, and sold veggies at the farmers market. We also commercially grew cauliflower and broccoli for two seasons for Control Data. Then we started a small Christmas tree farm on our property and sold trees for nearly 20 years and produced fresh Christmas wreaths, garland (5 1/2 mi.) in our hayday. Did both retail and wholesale for 30 + years. So, when I watch you, I certainly relate to our lives here in MN.
My Husband is a landscaper by trade and is still working at age 69 and we work our garden together. So sorry to see the devastation due to the drought. Yes, woodchucks will destroy crops and raspberries. Raccoons have ruined our sweet corn crop this year and I am so disappointed as we don't have corn for the year now. Keep the faith, you will get through these tough times, even when all seems lost. God bless!

The females with babies would get more than one frozen bottle, to keep cool--the bucks would each get one & that kept them cool enough to continue to breed, etc. We built the pole barn under the trees for the shade also. Here in GA we are having 100+ in previous weeks, very little rain, this week and the next month and half are still going to be in the high 90's. Rough times guys! Luckily many of us have supplies stored away just for times like this.

*hugs* to you both. Prayers for a rapid recovery to your farm. May God bless you, as you bless us with all the lessons from your experiences. Thank you for sharing!

We prayed for you tonight. Droughts are so hard to go through. We had one here in south eastern WI in 2012. We are dairy farmers and reduced our heard, and still bought hay to get through. God is faithful and we enjoy your channel so much!

Wow! Can we relate, we are in Utah fighting the same things, the heat is literally burning up our garden, we have rust on everything, I think we all are praying for some relief

Thank you for sharing the hard things along with the good. We've been a farming family all our lives (East side WA, dry land wheat farming growing up and West sided WA hay, cattle and garden farming in our mid twenties) and have experienced the lack of rain and the flooding. God is good in it all and will see you through. Last year was over the top hot in our area. We experienced 109 degrees in June in the west side of WA state. Unusually high for us in general, especially for that time of year. This year was cooler, so we started late in our gardens. The ebbs and flows of weather are how most farmers see things. You are a blessing to many of us and even though your message was not all good, you encourage followers to carry on. Will be praying for the blessing of deep soaking rain.

I am in Greene County NY. We haven't had anything to mow since early June. Our creek beds are bone dry. Gardens with drip systems look like late September. Even my hostas and ferns look like October. Trees are dying and wells are super low. It's heartbreaking. Last Thursday night it was nearly 90° when I went to bed. The next morning, Friday, it was 50°. I am 74. I cannot remember a summer like this...in 74 years!!!
