  • This is myself sharing my encounter with a water softener and how it can effect everything. This video is dated. However, I enjoy sharing everything I learn in this hobby. 🤙

    This video is great timing! I plan on stocking my tank this weekend with some wild caught amphipods. My tap water is “hard” but if I see problems then you have already solved them for me ;) Have been taking much better care of my little ten gallon with your insight! Whenever I eventually post it I will show you

      I'm happy you found some information helpful. Anything I learn along the way, I share for those reasons.
      I would definitely like to see your setup when you're finished.
      I could look at tanks all day.
      I'm headed out now to get a couple shrimp. Test my luck, however I'm armed this time with knowledge and improvement.

      @@yourtap hell yeah cant wait to see your shrimps thriving! I just nabbed maybe two dozen amphipods and a half dozen aquatic isopods from a local spring. All seems really well if it is still thriving in a week I will make a video to show you ;)

    Curious if it stays correctly balanced? or do you need to add more every week? or month?

      It dissolves. Checking your water GH will show you where it's at when you're happy with the amount and checking it frequently in the beginning to indicate when it's time to replace. Thanks for the question!

    This video was awesome, because I was coming across all these videos on what it all does, and what it all means, but I couldn't find any videos with people having my same issues.
    My PH, KH, and GH are all through the roof....
    With that being said, I guess I could just say fuck it, and just be limited to choosing fish that live in my water parameters, and be stuck with what I'm stuck with, or get an 3 stage RO filter and create the water mysef, but that seems like alot of work for only a 10G/tank, just to have the fish I want....
    The PH won't budge, because the GH is so high...
    I'd like to have general communal fish and school fish, but live bearers seem to be the few fish that like my water...

    • @yourtap
      @yourtap  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I feel your pain. This means your TDS is through the roof as well.
      I caved in. I start from scratch with all my tanks. RO water. Being limited to just Guppies, mollies, platties etc really sucks. Especially since they can do well in soft acidic water too.
      I use buffers in my filters now. I took full control over my PH, GH, and carbonates. I wanted success with every plant and animal I put in my care.
      Dozens of types of Tetras, hundreds of Neocaridinas, pufferfish etc. The list continues. You'll get bored with live bearers. Thanks for watching and you're not alone.
      Hints- "Your tap water is Crap"

      @@yourtap I appreciate your response! It looks like I'm going the more expensive Ro/di route...it the only way unfortunately...seems like alot of people are forced to. I live in the north east. Seems like the water isn't too great out this way, know for our hard city waters..
      I'll just get the Ro and and and a 5g bucket and whatever else I need...thanks alot, I'll continue to watch you!

    Dustin, great listening to your thoughts on this. It is confusing with many variables at play...when things start falling into place and those lightbulb moments start coming you know youre on the right path. Take your time, dont be in too much of a hurry, research what you want to keep and you find success....

    I used to have the same issue, local tap water has about 1 dGH, and it's bad for shrimps and snails. I bought a kilo of crushed coral, and place them in tank, after 2~3 weeks, GH raise to about 3 degree, but I learned that 8 degree is ideal.
    In the end I purchased 2 reagents online: CaCl2`2H2O; MgSO4`7H2O, and made them standard solutions at 20g/L (as Ca and Mg). Now everything is fine, and the aquarium plants grow very well.

    • @yourtap

      I'm happy you figured it out my friend. Yeah, it wasn't until I noticed any shrimp I bought died in 24hrs.
      The majority of things I learned were at the expense of some animals lives. Lessons all over the place in this hobby.
      I use solely beach sand now. I may refresh the bags once a year now.
      Thanks for saying Hi 🤙

    Great information , i just got a red claw craw ..my hardness is 140ppm and my GH is a 25ppm, i need to increase GH. How long took you to get it set up. How long do these parameters last? how much magnesium and calcium?
    ....Thanks

    • @yourtap
      @yourtap  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can't speak for how much or for how long. Measurements need to happen on your end by testing your water frequently until you've reached a desired GH you're looking for. Hope that helps 🤙
