    Fun fact that Petteri didn't mention. Närpiö, where he has his summer house, is a place on the Finnish west coast which is predominantly Swedish speaking (the ratio is something like 88% Swedish-speaking, 6% Finnish-speaking and the rest are other languages). The name in Swedish is Närpes and the local Swedish dialect is very hard to understand even for native Swedish-speakers.

    • @Cikeb
      @Cikeb 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@holoholopainen1627 It's really not that mysterious. Thing is, the Swedish language in Sweden has changed more rapidly than the Swedish language has in Finland. Fredrik Lindström, who is a television presenter and language scholar in Sweden, commented on the Närpes dialect by pointing to how similar it is to the Swedish that was spoken in Stockholm in the 16th and 17th century. Standard Swedish has changed a lot in the past 500 years, but in some places it has retained its form in local dialects.

      @@holoholopainen1627 I'm sure the coastline was frequented by folks from the western side of the sea during the viking age, but that doesn't mean that the local dialect has retained its original form for 1000 years. That stick was also in two piece so you couldn't cheat by carvin extra notches then your piece and employer piece notches didn't match.

    About he last one, "päivä on pulkassa", this comes from early job time / double receipt system in Finland (farms). Like when you went to work on some farm, the owner gave you a block of wood called "pulkka" (comes from "pulikka", a round piece of log). after you had worked in the farm for a day, the boss would carve a notch to your "pulkka", and a another one to hes "pulkka", that has your name on it.. this way both party have receipt of that days work, and the day's work would have been done (päivä on pulkassa [the day has been written in the wooden block called pulkka]). after week/month, you would get paid by how many notches your "pulkka" has (and of course your pulkka has to match the one the boss has)

    The Moomin 1990 TV series is actually a Japanese-Finnish-Dutch show. Most fo the creators of the show (animators, directors, writers) are Japanese. So technically Moomin is an anime.
    Moomin also first aired on TV Tokyo, which, quite obviously, is a Japanese TV channel. So that's why it's so well known in Japan too.
    The Moomin cartoons before the 1990 we all know and love were also produced in Japan and actually never aired outside of it (due to Tove not liking them since they were pretty unfaithful to the original source material).

    Nice video! Btw, "Mitä sinulle kuuluu?" literal translation is "What are you hearing?/ What do you hear?". Could also mean "What belongs to you", but I think it refers to the hearing one :) not sure why, but it's like how are you, what are you hearing.

      @@FabrizioDaniele I'm a bit late to this party, and my apologies if you've already received a sufficient explanation, making this explanation redundant, but I believe there is another finnish idiom to describe 'sisu': "Eteenpäin, sanoi mummo lumessa", which roughly translates to "Onwards, said granny in snow". Basically, it's guts or grit, the strength of will to continue and go on, to power through the difficult times.

    "Päivä on pulkassa". Petteri, you have the meaning right = the day is done. But 'pulkka' in this case is not sledge but actually a stick. Pulkka=pulikka=keppi. So it means literally: the day is on the stick. Part of the rent of tenant farmers (torppari) was paid by doing a day's work for the manor (or many!). At the time not many could read. So the book keeping was done on sticks. When the day's work was done a line was carved on a stick. Each tenant had their own stick. So at the end of the day they could say: 'päivä on pulkassa' the day has been marked on the stick.

    "Persaukinen" comes from the era when men carried their wallet in the pocket which was on the backside of their trousers. That was "perstasku" (arse pocket). When somebody stole your wallet (which was of course easy in this case) you went broke i.e. "persauki". Of course you could be "persaukinen" for some other reason as well (jobless etc.).
