    Stuff we use:
    LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
    AUDIO
    Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
    Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
    LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
    COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
    EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

    Can we just agree that every writer is an individual and there is no "do this and all is good" in writing. Everyone has a different approach to writing and it will also heavily depend on the genre and the story itself. If only we could stop making videos that suggest that there is a right way to do it - because there isn´t. Sit down - be passionate - find your way - nail it!

    I read the comments and only a single poster used the correct English “Maths”. And that’s vaguely comical. I’m not personally talented at Maths but I can tell usually in an few hours if they’re good at it because those who are tend to have ordered thoughts, a logical flow to ideas that makes them easy to follow. I glean from Burdick that the discipline of many functions learned from Maths helps him write better, more efficiently, and ultimately more logical stories. Great advice and for those it resonates with I’m sure it will help. For those who despise the subject, I’m pretty sure you have your talents and workarounds for storytelling. P.S. remember when you saw _The Matrix_ and realized the author used seventh grade Calculus as a backdrop for a story? UNREAL use of calculus!

    I refuse to believe this. Adding structure to creativity is good to a certain extent but you shouldn't over do it and it shouldn't be the main focus. I feel the same way with music..... these theories are good and these set of rules are good but at the same time they have the ability to drain your intuitive and spontaneous thoughts. It's all about the balance for me. Art is something you want to learn but not too much if that makes sense.

    • @Musicball
      @Musicball 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the important thing to remember is that every artist is different. The entire creative process will vary depending on the artist. I enjoy watching the Film Courage interviews because there is a lot of great information and insight, but when it comes to the rules, if it doesn't apply to me, or I give it some thought and conclude that this particular "rule" or school of thought doesn't work for me, I file it in the "Things Other Artists Do" cabinet and keep it moving. I refuse to be discouraged or held back by someone else's idea of how my creativity is supposed to work.

Over informing yourself can cloud original ideas because unlike you said, there is no such thing as not being able to learn anymore. In today’s age you can constantly gain new information about even a niche subject everyday for the rest of your life if you see fit…but like many artists, at some point YOU have to personally set a limit and say to yourself you’ve learned all you can learn. Do you get my point? Learn all you can learn but don’t let time pass you by because you were too busy overthinking it. The most successful people tend to be masters of execution. Focus on that.

  • @Chandler_Goodrich
    @Chandler_Goodrich 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    He said the word math once, sort of; he said mathematical, and not like the title suggests.
    His methodology reminds me of Larry Brooks’ Story Physics. Six core competencies of storytelling, and six forces that drive them. None is more important than the other; they all work together. One of those is structure. How you use that structure is up to you. And if you don’t write with it in mind, that’s fine, just know that every edit brings you back into that structure that we recognize as a story anyway. Whether you find it in the drafting or in the outline, it doesn’t matter because the result is the same.
    It is a principle, though, not a rule. A rule applies only one way in every situation unless you change it. A principle doesn’t change, but has many applications.
    The math side of storytelling comes in when writing a certain moment in the story. You know what effect it is supposed to have, you know it’s supposed to be stronger than the last thing, but not as strong as the one toward the end. That’s literally as mathematical as storytelling gets.
    If everything you set up pays off well, and the story is meaningful, you love the characters, beginning is strong and makes you curious to read on, the end satisfies, and it’s entertaining to those who read it, you’ve done the “math” correctly.
