Their reactions to breaking the record show that these guys are still schoolboys at heart and the most impressive thing Bobby Thatcher has instilled in these guys is the maturity to row as well as they do, to look after their bodies, and to keep aiming and pushing for lofty goals such as the ones they've achieved today. Amazing performance from a legendary crew and hats off to Bobby Thatcher and the SPS staff involved.

Not only are St Paul's rowers incredibly fit, but look at how smooth the stroke is from the catch to the finish. The boat has almost no jerking motion at any point in the stroke and is riding almost perfectly flat on the water...immediate and synchronized pickup at the catch, no weird motions of the body, perfect sync. Compared to the Eton crew (who is certainly very fast) they look so much more loose and clean.
@@andrewmckimm9736 St Pauls is the clever half of Eton. Similar Oxbridge/IvyLeague places/scholarships/exhibitions with a fraction of the number of pupils.

This makes me miss rowing so much, wish I started sooner than at Uni but still happy I had the opportunity to race at HRR in my final year. To be at this level is a dream and they are so young. I wonder how many of them are racing for GB Rowing?
All 9 of them should have finished college/grad school by now so who knows if they’ll be on the senior team the next few years
Ollie Parish (4 seat) did go on to win the boat race with Cambridge (actually coxed by his own brother) and I believe has made a few appearances for the national team but I'm not sure if that's been at senior level (I believe he's still U23)
It would appear Calvin Tarczy (5) is rowing for Leander and so may also be making his way up the ranks
Stroke seat is now racing for Leander as the stroke of the VIII, and I think he’s in the U23 GB 8+. He’s stroking the VIII in the Grand and the 4- in the Steward’s
I remember when Bobby was pushed around when he was competing at GB 🇬🇧 level .. Big mistake. Look at him now . He’s Extremely talented.
The coach, Martin Mc Elroy, was partial to his boys. Bobby is the Olympic champion we were denied. He is passing down his craft to a bunch of very lucky boys.

Congratulations to them, and, I think they could stand to learn about decorum, teamwork and empathy by staying in the boat and working as a boat all the way until they put the boat in the slings- then celebrate like crazy. Not to mention, congratulate, or say something nice to the other boat for their hard work. Not classy, in my opinion.

@@AxelPRC Cool! I'm not saying that they didn't pay their respects to the other crew- we don't know wether or not they did based on the video. We just know that they didn't at the end of the race because they were busy celebrating.
I think that they should be VERY proud of their hard work and accomplishment, and that they should celebrate as they desire once they are off the water and the boat is put safely away.
I was trained as a collegiate and master rower to be very disciplined in the boat- always to follow the coxswain's directions, always to be focused, always be listening, always respectful to everyone's safety in the shared boat, always respectful to the equipment, always respectful to the opponents and the waterway traffic, etc.
I was also trained to go to a paddle at the end of a race, no matter what, and to not let the boat fall apart just because we were done and exhausted.
It literally hurts when teammates don't hold up their job in the boat- have you had an oar handle slam down so hard it smacks your fingers between the handle and the gunnel?
I was trained to paddle until the coxswain said to weigh enough.. then we could slump in exhaustion or high five each other, when the cox gave the go-ahead that we were safely out of the way and in a steady position.
I think that the intensity of their celebration is certainly understandable, and I'm sure it felt good to them to let loose like that after that row.
However, I feel that they were not respectful to the equipment by banging oars in the riggers, falling out of the boat, climbing over each other, etc.
I feel that they were not respectful to the safety of their boat and the waterway, or their coxswain's directions by completely losing their minds and focus like that.
I feel that while they CERTAINLY deserve a huge celebration, it's a bit of a gloat and a rub in their opponents' faces to celebrate that huge right while the other crew is still trying to finish the race. Demoralizing for them, I'm sure, to hear the other crew celebrating while you are still driving the last bit of your brains out with each stroke? Ouch.
Whatever- we can all think whatever we want about anything, can't we?

@@gavinboyd-goodrich8718 Everyone is entitled to their opinions! Our's are different- no big deal. I don't agree with the sentence, "Any fan of the sport should....". The word 'should' implies there is a right and wrong thing to do, and that the speaker is the expert on that. You have an opinion. I disagree with it.
And, I am celebrating for them. Perhaps you missed that in my communication. I just don't think they were respectful in how they celebrated.
I also don't think there is a relationship between what type of regatta and what standards there are for respect. While I think that winning that race was a HUGE achievement, that warrants a HUGE celebration, I still think they could have displayed better decorum and respect... I would expect that of everyone, regardless of the level of the race, or how close it was. I also respectfully disagree with your statement about them not being able to get there without respect for all of the listed things and people.
I would never claim to know whether or not someone respected something, since that is an internal feeling/experience for that person.
Maybe they do, and maybe they don't, but as I understand respect- they lacked it at the end of the race. And, that is how I was raised and coached, and is my opinion. Everyone has there own opinions, kind of like buttholes!
There is no right answer here, or a one size fits all.
This is a useless debate about our subjective perspectives that I regret starting. I wouldn't expect 'the internet' to respect that I have an opinion, based on over 30 years as an athlete and 20 years or so as a coach.

Amazingly clean row by St Paul.
Slide length similar to Ollie Zeidler, not overcompressing. Pulling down at finish less than most, reduced hull drop at finish to maintain more speed. Great unified row, amazing timing. Coach and crew all wanted to be excellent, so they were !
