  • "Putin would do every possible terrible thing to him and he would come out laughing, telling jokes."
    In light of The Times Magazine publishing the first extracts from Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny's posthumous book, 'Patriot', anti-corruption campaigner Bill Browder remembers his friend who gave his life in opposing Putin's murderous regime.

    Navalny's courage, decency and commitment to a better Russia will not be forgotten. Anyone who has never gone on a hunger strike in captivity, should at least not make fun of it - or stay silent here.

    To obey as well as command, to follow more than to lead,
    These also are the lessons of our New World;
    While how little the New after all, how much the Old, Old World!

    I cannot imagine the amount of courage it must have taken to go back to Russia knowing this is what would likely happen. Russia has lost a real hero.

      I am Russian, live Samara. Many say he made bad mistake in doing this return. He could have gone Georgia, gone where 2,000,000 Russian men have fled to (avoid mobilization) and been leader.

      Navalny is my hero.
      Overcome all fear in returning to Moscow
      Putin would be ashamed to stand before this man and look in his eye
      Also too timid to look in Widow Navalnys eye.

    Although Navalny's struggle against Putin is the thing that defines him most, lets not forget that he was no Angel.
    He was a far right nationalist, with views that certainly did not align with Western values. Still, RIP.

    Navalny was a truly courageous and good human being. All over the world other good people risk their lives for Truth, Freedom and Democracy. We need to step up, we cannot let their sacrifice and fight be in vain.

      Anyone who opposes Putin becomes the best buddy of the Western Establishment, even if he's a serial killer who murdered his own family, they are eager to overlook all sins. Remember the USA was happy to work with cruel dictators when it suited their purpose.

    believe there is to be a revolution in the relations between labor and capital. The laboring people a few generations ago were not very intellectual. There were no schoolhouses, no teachers except the church, and the church taught obedience and faith-told the poor people that although they had a hard time here, working for nothing, they would be paid in Paradise with a large interest. Now the working people are more intelligent-they are better educated-they read and write. In order to carry on the works of the present, many of them are machinists of the highest order. They must be reasoners. Every kind of mechanism insists upon logic. The working people are reasoners-their hands and heads are in partnership. They know a great deal more than the capitalists. It takes a thousand times the brain to make a locomotive that it does to run a store or a bank. Think of the intelligence in a steamship and in all the thousand machines and devices that are now working for the world. These working people read. They meet together-they discuss. They are becoming more and more independent in thought. They do not believe all they hear. They may take their hats off their heads to the priests, but they keep their brains in their heads for themselves.
