Playing the Carillon 200 feet over Garden Grove at the Christ Cathedral

- Carillonneur Melissa Weidner plays the carillon atop the Crean Tower at the Christ Cathedral in Garden Grove.
The carillon is a musical instrument that consists of at least 23 bells. The carillon, 200-feet above the ground, is played by striking a keyboard with the fists, and by pressing the keys of a pedal keyboard with the feet. Cables attached to the instrument strike the bells.
Weidner is one of the only people in Orange County who can play the carillon - located in the tower.
She is giving an Easter concert series using a 52-bell carillon at the Christ Cathedral campus. The carillon is at the top of the 200-foot Crean Tower, the structure next to the Christ Cathedral.
That's super-cool. I just watched a video this morning by Joey Brink where he pointed out the minor 3rd overtone on most bells, and I mentioned hearing about some efforts toward bumping that up. He told me about the carillon here being a major 3rd one, and it's a nice, sunny sound. I imagine there is rep that sounds better on a conventional one, and rep that sounds better on this one. Lovely tour!
The unusual thing about that carillon is that the bells were cast with an odd bulge in the middle to create a major third overtone rather that the normal minor third.
Definitely adds a distinct silvery brilliance to the sound.
There are a number of good carillon videos on TH-cam, my favorite being on Rob Scallon's channel, called Carillon a tower with 100 tons of bells. This gives a lot of background on the second largest carillon in the world which is at the Rockefeller Memorial Chapel at the University of Chicago. There are are some fine videos about carillons in the Low Countries, as well as concerts on some of them. The Dom Tower in Utrecht, Netherlands has videos of Queen and Abba music.
