It's a real shame that Philip Seymour Hoffman has passed away and DDL is retired. I could've wanted a Paul Thomas Anderson movie starring DDL, Hoffman, and Joaquin Phoenix. Imagine the talent level in that movie

They wouldn't even need a great director to make that one of the best films of all time. Those guys in their prime (early 2010s I'd argue) were untouchable.

The greatest actor in our times. There Will Be Blood is my all time favourite movie, such a shame that it didn't win the Best Picture, losing to No Country for Old Men which is also another masterpiece.

Those two movies coming out the same year was bad luck for There Will Be Blood, in that sense. No Country for Old Men is my favorite movie of this century, FWIW. Most years, TWBB would have had a great shot. (Take a look at some of the very weak Best Pictures in recent years.)

Yeah My Beautiful Laundrette was a bit of a hit in Australia back in the day, lots of word of mouth, and we all went along to see it to quite packed houses, though admittedly in relatively small cinemas. Then we saw him in A Room With a View and were like whaaaat??? That's the same guy??? THEN we saw him in The Unbearable Lightness of Being, and WHAAAAAT???? Same guy????🤣🤣

Daniel Day-Lewis is my favourite actor of all time and my favourite performance of his is definitely his turn in There Will Be Blood. I also think his performance in Martin Scorsese’s The Age of Innocence is really underrated for how subtle it is. Day-Lewis often goes very big for his roles, but The Age of Innocence really captures this great repressed passion to it. Great movie. Super underrated within both Scorsese’s and Day-Lewis’s respective filmographies.
It really is a shame that he’s retired, but you know, never say never.

    • @rickdesper
      @rickdesper 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

I liked The Age of Innocence but found Ryder to be very distracting. The rule of thumb for Ryder is that she's great playing 20th century roles but flounders in period pieces. She was also weak in Dracula and (ugh) The Crucible. Thankfully Stranger Things is set in the 1980s, which is when she thrives

I don't know how true this is because someone told me this years ago, so take it as pure speculation when I say it, but when I was in college about 10 years ago, a guy I knew told me someone he knew was friends with one of DDL's kids and he was invited back to their flat for dinner one night. Of course he was in awe that he got to meet DDL, but he said that he one of the weirdest people he's ever met. Just the way he behaved was very odd. He was never just one person throughout the course of the evening. His voice was never the same and kept changing slightly. And the way he moved didn't seem natural either. He told the guy I knew that it was as if he still carried part of his characters' mannerisms with him.
When DDL announced his retirement and I thought about this encounter which, again, may or may not have happened, it didn't surprise me. Working to this degree must really take it's toll on one's psyche.

    • @rickdesper
      @rickdesper 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@Martin-q3t1y There's another video on this site that goes into the contrast between method acting and traditional theatrical acting. Many people worry about actors like DDL who may get too deeply into the roles they play. Now, I'm not really worried about DDL, but the story you relate sounds credible.

I heard an interesting theory about DDL from someone that I know that works in the industry that has seen DDL behind the scenes in real life. I doubt it is true, but it is a fun concept to imagine could be true.
I was told that DDL does "reverse acting". Whenever DDL does interviews or accepts awards and gives a speech, he is always a quiet, introverted type, very gentlemanly, slow in speech manner and deliberate in his words and cadences. Seeing this quiet inward type of man in interviews and giving speeches it blows your mind when you see such wild huge bold performances as There Will Be Blood or Gangs Of New York, leading you to think "Wow this guy is the best actor in the world". The theory I was told is that in real life, DDL is a big bold wild extrovert like most of the characters he plays, and being so big and bold is really not that much of a stretch for him since this is his REAL personality. His acting, therefor, is what you see when he is his "real self", the DDL that does interviews and awards speeches-he is massively toning down his real self so his performances look like masterworks in acting, leading audiences to believe "How can such a such a quiet introverted gentleman stretch so far to play those characters?" Look at his Oscar speech for Lincoln, when he looked almost embarrassed to tell the joke that Meryl Streep was originally cast as Lincoln and he was originally cast as Thatcher and they swapped roles. Theory is, this is not DDL's personality at all; this is his acting.
Probably not true, but fun to imagine and think about.

I was in awe when I left the theatre after Phantom Thread ended, but also very sad because I would never feel that way again since DDL was retiring and that magnetism he brings to his characters would never be seen for the first time again. He truly is one of the best craftman of the industry. He does not JUST act, he creates something special. It reminds me of the wise words Bryan Cranston once said about how he views each audition or each opportunity to act. I suspect DDL feels the same way.

Completely agree with your review of GANGS OF NEW YORK. The time period is very interesting and the epic scale of the movie is impressive, but the story itself as well as the storytelling just aren't all that engaging. You don't really remember most of the characters or even the point of the story. It's one of those movies that's kind of hard to pin your finger on why it doesn't come together. Day-Lewis's screen presence is the only thing about the film that always stands out.

The way DDL transforms into the characters in every movie of his...from his appearance, voice, tone of his voice, accent, etc. He truly is the greatest actor. Gary Oldman is perhaps the only other actor I can think of who is capable of being to change voice and accent the way DDL does.

The Age of Innocence is one of my favorite films/books of all time despite Daniel's best efforts and whatever Winona Ryder was doing (but it wasn't playing May Welland, that's for damn sure. Can you imagine what Anne Hathaway would've done with the role?). The standout was Michelle Pfeiffer and she didn't even get nominated. That snub is still a maddening headscratcher! My issue with their performances and actors like Meryl and Margot Robbie is they're great at their craft but I always, always see the gears turning in their performances. The effort, the straining, the precision but ultimately the artifice. It feels like Acting, but not in the Bette Davis tradition of reality+ but showing off for an audience of one: themselves. Still, I completely agree about your top pick and that Gangs of New York is a gorgeous mess. And you've convinced me to go ahead and finally check out Phantom Threads. I've been critical but there is no denying Daniel Day Lewis is a Leading Man. He has the looks, the talent, the nominations and the wins. No one can take that away from him, but is he a little overrated??? Great vid!

My problem with Day Lewis is that after Gangs of New York, he started acting in a way that seems specifically tailored for awards, especially in There Will Be Blood, I can feel that this acting tries to overshadow the film.
Maybe this is his strategy to win as many awards as he can, thus the small number of his films compared to others, making people wait for his films to give him special attention.

I just knew Brian would mention "My Beautiful Laundrette". Not a great performance but a very sexy one.

Excellent video, though you give a misleading impression at the end. "My Beautiful Laundrette" is not a gay movie. It's a movie that has two gay characters. As you know, it's about multiculturalism and Thatcher's England. The movie was groundbreaking precisely because it integrated a homosexual relationship into the story rather than making it the story. The clips you have chosen give the opposite impression, unfortunately.

I’ve only seen In the Name of the Father and Phantom Thread. I loved him in the former, as I had never even heard of him before that. His emotions and character progression were so on point I instantly fell in love with him as an actor. I was excited hearing he was in the latter, but I didn’t get into that performance or that movie nearly as much, and I thought it was the weakest Best Picture nominee that year for me personally. There were things I loved about the movie, but I thought the love story didn’t feel very compelling or believable at all, Alma in particular felt like her motivations and feelings toward him just flipped on a dime, and I thought the pacing was agonizingly slow. That said, his poetic dialogue and delivery during the Never Cursed scene was one of my favorite things in any movie that year.

IMO he was Supporting in Gangs of New York and they frauded him to Lead. That was DiCaprio's movie.

You note that Day-Lewis has only been nominated in the Best Actor category and say that's because he's always been the lead in these films. And I know it doesn't really seem like it, but in Gangs of New York, DiCaprio was technically the lead actor. He got top billing (though that by itself isn't determinative - see, e.g., Marlon Brandon in Superman) and his story was the main story of the movie.
But Day-Lewis just stole the movie away from him.
I agree with your comments about the casting. For DiCaprio, Gangs might well be his weakest performance. My guess is that his character was supposed to be evolving from cowardice to courage, but I really didn't feel it. He just got lost instead, esp. when matched up against Billy the Butcher. And Diaz, if I may say this, was just wrong. If a Winslet or a Collette had had that role, it could well have been twice as good. Diaz is a terrific comedic/action actress and has more range than people usually give her credit for, but this performance was a complete whiff.
But the rest of the supporting cast (John C. Reilly, Brendan Gleeson, Jim Broadbent, etc.) were very good.
As for the movies not nominated: back in the '80s when I first saw DDL, it was in A Room with a View and then his breakout role in The Unbearable Lightness of Being. And when i saw those, I heard he'd also done this amazing work in My Beautiful Laundrette. The latter film doesn't get aired often, so though I've seen the first fifteen minutes or so, I have not seen it in full. But, yes, i trust that its nomination-worthy.
DDL in Lightness gives a performance that certainly could have gotten Academy notice, had it gotten better backing and a big box office share, but it had a small release and the leads were all relative unknowns at the time.
DDL in A Room With a View is utterly unrecognizable. It's certainly an excellent performance, but his role is so small he could not even compete for awards with his View co-star Denholm Elliott (though his acting is at least as good.) Wikipedia tells us that DDL could have played the lead, George Emerson, instead of the minor role of Cecil Vyse, but he took the latter role because it was more challenging. I believe it.

So glad you singled out MY BEAUTIFUL LAUNDERETTE as a film he should’ve gotten nominated for. That would’ve been a fantastic nod!
I also agree he should’ve won his 3rd for PHANTOM THREAD and not LINCOLN.
Phoenix should’ve won for THE MASTER instead

Actors have little chance of winning if the fantastic D.D.Lewis is on the ballad. The same with Meryl Streep.

Let's be honest, he should've been supporting for Gangs of NY. He woulda swept as he was far more memorable and superior than either Christopher Walken or Chris Cooper for Catch Me If You Can/ Adaptation respectively. But DDL had way too much prestige that God forbid they campaigned him supporting despite how its not his film, has a whole half hour less wcreentime than Leo, and is the villain of the film.

I’m honestly kind of glad Daniel Day-Lewis didn’t get nominated for The Age of Innocence as well as In the Name of the Father, because then one would have to go supporting and that would be Jamie Foxx levels of category fraud.

Fun fact. Studios wanted to make a Doctor Strange movie in the 90's. First choice. Daniel Day Lewis. Just imagine how that film would have turned out. He would be perfect as Stephen Strange. He would definitely not do it but still 🤣
