47 Ronin is a Samurai tale set in Feudal Japan with Keanu Reeves as the "star". Despite being an outcast, Keanu must use his samurai sword skills to fight magical beasts and witches to save the hot princess. It just didn't work out so well, seeing as the movie became a flop and lost around a 100 million dollars. So today, let's try to see why. Why do the exciting elements of the movie go to waste? (Quite similar to my video on Seventh Son - How to Build a Cinematic Nightmare).

However, jealous Lord Kira (Tadanobu Asano) fears that the shogun favors Asano over him and hatches a plot that ends with Asano's ritual suicide. Oishi wanders for several years but realizes that he must turn to Kai (Keanu Reeves), a mixed-blood warrior he once rejected, to help him and his ronin comrades take revenge on Lord Kira.

It's such a shame that the movie became this because there's a true story that this is based on. The one year gap, for example, was because the real ronin laid low for two years before enacting their plan. It was like the writers read notes about what really happened, then wrote a completely different story leaving some details in to keep the name "47 Ronin"...but the real events are much more interesting.
It starts with two feudal lords ordered to prepare a reception for envoys of the Emperor at Edo castle. They were told why to do by an official in the shogunate, who later reprimanding the lords for not being generous enough in gifts or bribes. One lord lost his temper and made preparations to kill the official, but that lord's counselors convinced him to bribe the official instead. Then the official insulted the other lord, who had not responded to the previous offenses, but this time he finally snapped and attacked the official with a dagger, cutting his face before being separated by the guards. The attack happened on the grounds of Edo Castle, the shogun's residence, so it was a much more serious offense which required the feudal lord to commit seppuku.
The feudal lords principal counselor, a samurai now ronin, moved the lord's family away before surrendering the property to the government. Then laid in wait in Kyoto, under constant surveillance for two years before gathering the other ronin in a secret location in Edo to renew their oaths to their former lord and get revenge on the official. They stormed the residence of the official and a large battle ensued. The ronin killed 16 and wounded 22, but couldn't find the official. Eventually they found an entrance to a secret courtyard behind large scroll where the official was hiding. The ronin knelt before him to show respect to his position, and offered him the same dagger that the feudal lord had used to commit seppuku with. The official remained speechless, trembling in fear, until the ronin gave up waiting for a response. The leader of the ronin then beheaded him with that same dagger, put out the lamps in the residence to prevent the possibility of a fire which could spread to the neighbors, and took the official's head to their lord's grave over 10km away.
On the way to the grave, the ronin were met by people in the streets who had heard about what happened and offered them food, rest and praise. They arrived at the temple, cleaned the head and dagger, then placed both on their lords grave. They gave all their money to the temple's monk, asking the monk to pray for them and give them a proper burial before turning themselves into authorities. The shogunate didn't know what to do because the ronin had honored their oaths as samurai and taken revenge for their lord's death, but the same act went against the shogunate's authority as it had prohibited exacting revenge. The ronin were ordered to death and 46 committed seppuku, with the youngest being the son of the lead ronin at only 16 years old. The last ronin has a lot of mystery around why he wasn't at the temple or turned himself in with everyone else. Some say he was ordered to go to the lord's land and report on the death of the official, others that he was a coward and left before the battle, or was ordered to leave before the ronin turned themselves in. In the end, the shogun pardoned him and he lived to the age of 87 before being buried with the other ronin.
This is the movie I want to see, revenge on a dishonorable government official with the very same dagger that the other guy used to honorably commit seppuku. It doesn't say it was in the story, but if I were writing the movie it would be the same dagger which also cut the officials face in the fight, as if the lord's will finally landed the killing blow. Politics, relationships, leadership, honor, action, closure. I've been to the graves here in Tokyo at Sengakuji temple and they're very nondescript graves. They weren't afforded any luxury, but their story has been told throughout Japan.

Oh, he mean the ORIGINAL 47 Ronin. Not this version.
They actually can make it work with fantasy and magic. Super easy, barely an inconvenience. Just switch the main villain to the witch. Wanting to control Japan through puppet/proxy lord, why? Because she's evil and Japan is large country. She needs pawns to handle the day to day running the nation.
Make keanu into a Witcher/van helsing type character that specialises in hunting magic/supernatural enemies. He was hunting her from Europe.
And the witch wants the princess body. Why? Because she old. Why it take long? Because she use old school magic. It takes time, material, rituals to make magic.
She's basically maleficent from sleeping beauty.

A great way to have turned Keanu into an active protagonist would be for him to bust the samurai leader out of jail once he hears of the impeding wedding. He knows the men won’t listen to him due to him being a foreigner, but with the leader on his side, he can save the love of his life, as well as the land at large. It’s a simple fix, but I think it would’ve worked so much better.

A good part of why this movie is a motivational mess is that it was hacked to pieces and re-stitched in the editing bay with a bunch of new footage added. You would have noticed that the main protagonists of the movie SHOULD be Oishi and his son Chikara according to the plot. Oishi is the leader of the samurai after all. But it was all cut to focus on Reeves' character, up to and included extended love scenes. Much as we might all love Keanu, it's hard to argue this wouldn't have been a better movie without him, if they had just focused on the story of the samurai and the political intrigue of the era.

So this video makes it really clear that the original sin of the movie was not to adapt the story very straightly, with perhaps some explanation of why things matter to a western audience. Maybe that would be a way of sneaking Reeves into it making him a little more of an outsider who needs things explained to him. but I can’t help but think that a talented filmmaker could have made a very straight, grounded, historical epic, that’s still somehow explains things to western audiences. But adding in all the fantastical elements, and adding in Keanu Reeves was an artistic mistake.
And yeah, I guess I understand that if you didn’t put Reeves in it, it would’ve been harder to get the movie made it all, but I’m just talking about whether or not it would’ve been a good movie

Thank you for this. I've been always puzzled of why this movie didn't work. Like others, I don't think the original tale would need fantastic elements to make a great movie, but I never felt this was the real problem of the adaptation. Is kind off putting how I always though this as low budget movie, what was obviously not the case, as to how bad it was. Much like the other movie mentioned in the video. Bad writing making things feel cheap is not just a current thing, it seems.

My main gripe with this movie is that Oishi is so clearly supposed to be the protagonist. He is the one with most stakes, he moves the story forward (and Hiroyuki Sanada is arguably the better character actor). It feels like the filmmakers thought white audiences couldn't relate to an asian character so they just inserted a random mixed guy.
If they wanted a love story (which the movie did not need) they could have given more focus to Oishi's wife. Her line "I am the wife of a samurai - whatever your duty is, it is mine too." (when she refuses to divorce Oishi and decides to share his disgrace) is already more romantic than literally anything Kai and Mika said to each other.

There are real European samurai, an English sailor who was shipwrecked, so it's silly to force a European samurai into this story. It's a shame because this real life story deserved a proper retelling, it doesn't have the draw for a major blockbuster budget. This movie would've done fine as a low budget Kurosawa-style film.

I do think the representation of xenophobia and cultural conformity of ancient Japan was relatively solid and accurate to the time period. But this video did point out the strangeness of Keanu's acceptance of it , wholly without any criticism or resistance. The audience could not really root for his victory against this unfairness because the character himself was complicit in his own victimhood.

I saw a preview of this at the Australian International Movie Convention back in 2013. It was introduced as everything I wanted in a film... then they showed a scene. Audience members were raving about it, but I thought it looked so terrible that I actually questioned whether I even liked movies anymore. No joke. It made me consider quitting the industry, because in a room full of distributors, producers, programmers and studio execs, I appeared to be the only one who realised it was going to fail hard.
The fact I was right didn't change my feelings. I still question the value of this industry every day.

One of the biggest problems with 47 Ronin is that Keanu isn’t the main focus, he feels like a supporting character who just takes a lot of place. He never even interacts with the main villain who is about to marry the freaking love of his life, talk about a story-telling failure. I feel like the avenging master plot and the stopping the wedding plot sabotage each other, because it makes it unclear whether the movie is about revenge or love.

    • @TheSmokingMustache
      @TheSmokingMustache 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

My understanding is that the original cut (which is in a vault somewhere) had him as more of a supporting character and then the studio wanted him to be more of the main character and this led to reshoots and changing the edit. I dunno how true that is but it sounds right.

2:30 I'm sure there's a Term for casting an Actor simply because he is highly regarded in Hollywood right now, rather than someone who's fitting for the Role.
I think Keanu Reeves' Character is so inactive because in Asia, Status is more Important than Justice or Self Respect.
