My mum hated the film because she's more into story-driven films (more talking less action) and thought the non-stop action was kind of over the top. Didn't help that she didn't see the variety of fighting, she just reduced it down to fighting so it all looked the same to her. Personally, I loved every moment.
If she thinks there’s no story here, she doesn’t understand mythology. This is the Iliad, this is the Inferno. This is Hades. Anyone who thinks Wick is just action, are not getting all the details.

Although Tom Cruise is a close second. It's kind of a shame there are no NEW big movie stars anymore; the closest ones are Chris Pratt or Henry Cavill.
I think it's more telling how good the directors, set designers, coordinators, and choreographers are by the fact they can make such similar sets and it's still kickass.
Haven't seen the film yet but the blind guy fighting scene looks awesome, pinging your enemies location and then shooting by the sound it gives off? Pretty neat stuff

What's really unique about this franchise is that even though you know what to expect - everyone will still love to watch the next one. So even though they did intend to end it with 4, they're now seriously looking into making another because of how successful this was! Love it. But I think if they keep on continuing with chapter 5, I wish it would go back to the mellow and slow pace of the first movie, I think that would do a world of good for the franchise and the whole series.
They are not going to be able to top this one in terms of action but the 5th one cannot be slower because they have already created expectations in the audience
@@agraciotti very true, the first movie was pretty conservative with its action compared to Chapter 2, when Chapter 2 released they found the secret sauce on how to improve it and ended in Chapter 4.
I love how almost ALL ACTION MOVIES have drivers that NEVER EVER HITS THE BRAKE OR ACCELERATE AWAY from guys shooting assault rifles or bombing THE ROAD IN FRONT OF THEM
Some of the early sequences where you see john wick doing the disarms and takedowns, there are moments where they hang alittle too long, long enough that you kinda seem him struggling to line up the throw. Theyve done that in previous John Wick movies but i guess after watching the whole series i just notice it abit more. I do appreciate that they show the whole move, it's just this time around the takes they used were slightly long enough that I noticed them that way Definetly loved the roundabout and the hotline miami sequence. The old boy homage was cool too.
I personally appreciate these aspects honestly! Even if it's unintentional I think it makes him come across as less flawless when he's not always actually more skilled than his opponents (as seen by being saved from likely death by allies multiple times). That and while Reeves doing the stunt work means it's not always as completely flawless as a professional stunt double might have made it it does allow them to put him in full view of the camera rather than having to conceal the double work, which is a big plus too (probably obvious to many as this is a big reason why Reeves did so much of it to begin with, but worth mentioning regardless).
I really appreciate your channel and what you do, And I especially like when you make a video about a movie you thought was done really well, because I think I speak on behalf of a lot of people who came here to learn when I say that I learn more from your critiques and analysis of good movies than bad ones, because the things that make a good movie very good are often not as easily identifiable as the things that make a bad movie bad.
I liked part 1 & 2’s gritty melee combat, in the first 2 it looks like his opponents are actually trying to be uncooperative and he has to use his technique’s more realistically. In 3 & 4 it looks more and more like ‘normal’ action choreography. It may sound odd but look at part 1 then part 3 and you see the difference very well. 4 is a good movie but it’s more of the same, not bad, a fun watch but I do feel like a part 5 won’t be adding anything to this franchise. But that’s just my opinion 🫡
I'm afraid of Chapter 5. With every new movie, the stakes are raised more and more. The expectations are getting higher and higher, and right now, the franchise is in a good place. Of course, Chad Stahelski and Keanu and everyone else are awesome, but I'm not sure how they'll bring John back from the dead. He looked pretty bad.
In the first film John and his enemies had to rely more on skill too, since the bulletproof suit wasn't a thing. The suit is a cool concept in the sequels, but got kinda ridiculous at points.
I just love when directors and cinematographers are proud of their action and stunt work, and insist on no hard cuts or jumping or jitter, but long, slow, beautiful shots of fantastic action sequences and martial arts. If you've paid for the damned action scene, you USE the action scene.
John wick 4 is 3 John wick movies in 1. The first movie is an awesome Japanese style Wick film, the second is John rejoining his family in Germany, then the third movie is John Wick in Paris non stop fighting to kill his mark. Maybe this is the normal 3 act structure but I like seeing it as 3 movies because each act you’re so engrossed in what’s going on, by the end I genuinely forget how great the opening is
I also saw Chapter 4 as the culmination of elements from the previous three films: - A fight in a nightclub while chasing a target? Chapter 1! - Miniboss henchmen to fight, a car chase, and the pencil? Chapter 2! - John fighting alongside other skilled assassins with attack dogs? Chapter 3!
What I find about John Wick franchise which sets it apart from other action flicks is it's use of location in general . Every location has a very futuristic vibe for example the glass museums , High end nightclubs , beautiful church etc which really feels like John is taking on an ancient force which goes beyond anyone's comprehension . Every other action movie just uses generic set locations such as Hotels , warzones , filthy alleyways etc which makes them by the books and hitting checkmarks . Even the final boring conversation between Akira and John was unique due to the use of the Subway and the lighting . These are signs of a great filmmaker
Why did people love this movie so much? The plot is nonexistent before the ending, it's just John killing random dudes in 3 different locations, like in a storyless videogame
JW: chapter 4 is easily the best of the series. The ending was very difficult to watch, knowing that only one of the two friends would walk out alive. The conclusion was smart, surprising and above all satisfying. I'm glad Chad Stahelski tried something slightly different from a bloody massacre for the final battle scene.

Notes writers should take while watching Filmento's videos: 1. virtues that make good plot good, 2. how to include advertisement in video so it's not only smooth, but also fun
This movie feels like you're playing the very intense action game without even playing it. There are constant objectives to achieve to get to the final showdown, and each of the fights reminds me of video game level design; every level has its own environmental difference or perspective change to keep the gameplay fresh and not repetitive.
I LOVED John wick 4 ❤️ the whole aesthetics, the stunts, keanu… the amazing roundabout sequence, the stairs, the ending. Everything was good and there was not a boring second

I’ve found that even if an action scene is unplanned and only happens because I’m writing a scene where several characters are at odds and in close proximity, I can still make it memorable if I take into account the variables and environment I’ve already put into the scene.

After watching the trailers, I thought this was just going to be more of the same. Then I saw the movie. I was wrong, and glad that I was. Your analysis of why it works is so good. Thank you,
But he truly was unkillable, which made it unlike the concept John Wick movies. He literally fell from a building and shrugged it off. Else it was mostly a great story.
@@marianoronix Yeah, the amount of shit John survives tends to be off-putting here aswell, but I love it nonetheless In the first movie he gets tossed from a balcony in a club, lays there for a few seconds, then shrugs it off. In the third movie he gets tossed off the balcony of the Continental and bounces of multiple hard surfaces, but still survives to make it to the Bowlery King. In the fourth movie he gets tossed off yet another balcony in the Berlin night club, and also gets up after about ten seconds and shrugs it off. In Paris, he gets hit by about three cars in a row and it barely affects him. On top of that, he falls all the way down the stairs and even gets his back slammed against a lamp post, but apparently he also shrugs that off quite quickly and doesn't affect him when fighting up the stairs with Caine and fighting him in the duel after.
@@TH_Zireael2077 I won,t say he shrug it off in first movie. He defeats a lots of a guys, meets one that beats him and it is a clear signal he is not unstopabble. MS. Perkins gave him a hard time, and even the fact he was wounded does not change the fact he is not the youngest and most agile around. With introduction of bulletproof vest, it gets worse, and in the third movie he behaves like video game character which regenerates his health after every fight.
My only gripe with this film is that the old rules stated that the 2nd person picked for a duel would also unlive if the one that picked them were to lose but I'm also not mad that they didn't do that to a legend like Donnie, maybe it's because he made the annoying french guy say that he would get pardoned once it was over but it's still breaking the rules (and the old ones too which should be an ever bigger no no). Maybe there's some fine print to it idk...
The best thing about this movie for me is that it knows nobody who is watching will take it that seriously, so it goes buck wild with the scenes and action which makes it really unique in my opinion.
That John wick scene where they’re fighting in that French building is literally the equivalent of killzone liberation. Watching that brought back some memories…
i feel like the dragon breath shotgun rounds only work because of the top down shot they decided to incorporate. If they stuck with the regular action shots of behind the person and surprise attack, like they did in the first movie but add the shotgun, it would ok but excessive. But deciding to have a top down setting like you would see in the game hotline miami, then you see the rounds go off and the chaos that one scene creates which makes it so memorable
I'm not into "action" films, per se -- but I love the John Wick series. I'm not into "car stunts," per se -- but the shot where John is drifting in the French Roundabout, dragging his hand on the ground until he finds a gun... just magnificent. As you said (pardon my presumptuous paraphrasing), the addition of elements you wouldn't have expected is what makes watching a film more of a treat than a way to kill time.
The one thing I didn't like in this movie was the way they introduced the "dragon's breath" weapon. All the bad guys get the contract to kill John, and that's when 2 of them decide to take a few moments to "test" the weapon, just so it wouldn't be weird to the viewers later when they use it in the fight. It could have been done way better.
In John wick 5 ..... John fight at the bottom of the ocean against divers with harpoon with sharks cycling around. In John wick 6 .... John fight in space at Saturn's rings.
The insert ads scenario are getting INSANELY good xD That's quite art at this point ! And I want a brotherhood of italian arms and brain as the next boss now !
With all the discussions about Cain, unfortunate that you didn't mention that he's really just Zatoichi, the blind swordsman. It's a way of bringing a west vs east feel, with crazy gun skills vs crazy sword skills.

It also shows how far the Marquis was willing to go since business inside The Continental is forbidden. I agree that it doesn't add that much to the plot, but it helps raise the stakes.
The story is an excuse for body count. Its an exercise in sociopathology.
Its great how he incorporates his sponsore in his videos. It really is proving the concept of using what you have in a new and fun way
LMAO fr that was so funny
My mum hated the film because she's more into story-driven films (more talking less action) and thought the non-stop action was kind of over the top. Didn't help that she didn't see the variety of fighting, she just reduced it down to fighting so it all looked the same to her.
Personally, I loved every moment.
Reminds me of how Ebert hates action films so he won't pay attention during them, then complain about the film as a result.
If she thinks there’s no story here, she doesn’t understand mythology. This is the Iliad, this is the Inferno. This is Hades. Anyone who thinks Wick is just action, are not getting all the details.
Your mom is a pretty good masochist.
@@JCDenton95 I didn't show her the other films. From that perspective there is a lot of missing context about the story.
@@hazim9529 Nah, she just wanted to give me company as I watched it for my birthday. I warned her it was going to be non-stop action but she thought that meant it was like Mission imposible.
The dragons breath shotgun scene was super crazy 🙃
John Wick proves that Keanu Reeves is the most badass actor in the industry right now.
Although Tom Cruise is a close second. It's kind of a shame there are no NEW big movie stars anymore; the closest ones are Chris Pratt or Henry Cavill.
@@MarvinPowell1 chris hemsworth's extraction is pretty good.
Clarification: those seem to be motion sensor doorbells. He's not echolocating.
Why not just plant proximity mines then?

My first time watching I knew I recognised Scatt Adkins from somewhere, but his makeup and suit had me completely fooled, I couldn't quite place him. On a second watch I realised who it was and I was even more excited.
Yeah I watched it 3 times at the cinema, this series has been amazing and I hope it ends here and just stays perfect.
What's really unique about this franchise is that even though you know what to expect - everyone will still love to watch the next one. So even though they did intend to end it with 4, they're now seriously looking into making another because of how successful this was! Can you imagine what it would be like if John Wick faces off against Ethan Hunt? 😮
No. We don’t need 5. This is the perfect ending.
@@JCDenton95 I'm sure that was their intention but it always comes down to money. The studio sees how much of a smash hit it is and they'll want to keep the franchise going.
If Wick can survive multiple shootings AND falling off the continental hotel, I'm sure they'll find a way of bringing him back
@@mhassan9784 they showed his headstone and gave his death a proper payoff. Making another one starring him is dumber than the plot of the fourth one was. i despise movies that fake deaths.
Keanu Reeves has to have had the most successful transformation in cinema history
This movie is almost The PEAK OF ACTION AND CINEMA 🙂💥
It absolutely needs to but I'm genuinely happy having the headcanon that john passes in 4 because it wraps up all 4 movies super well
No way. Today I see the first one as a mere prototype. It only got better precisely because it went crazier
@@agraciotti very true, the first movie was pretty conservative with its action compared to Chapter 2, when Chapter 2 released they found the secret sauce on how to improve it and ended in Chapter 4.
He going to go back in the past seeing him accomplish the impossible task
Seeing this movie in cinema was so much fun ! I don't remember the last time I had that much in an action movie !
Love your work as always ❤️
I agree! I had a blast.
Perfection is an understatement for this incredible John Wick series.
Filmento i appreciate your well executed attempts at Keanu Reeves impressions with "Yeah" and "No"
I love how almost ALL ACTION MOVIES have drivers that NEVER EVER HITS THE BRAKE OR ACCELERATE AWAY from guys shooting assault rifles or bombing THE ROAD IN FRONT OF THEM
my man. probably the best ad setups/segways i have ever seen. *chefs kiss*
I'm not even a John Wick fan but this movie took my breath away. It was amazing!
Some of the early sequences where you see john wick doing the disarms and takedowns, there are moments where they hang alittle too long, long enough that you kinda seem him struggling to line up the throw.
Theyve done that in previous John Wick movies but i guess after watching the whole series i just notice it abit more. I do appreciate that they show the whole move, it's just this time around the takes they used were slightly long enough that I noticed them that way
Definetly loved the roundabout and the hotline miami sequence.
@@caelincoolz5814 he got shot in the exact same spots he shot the doctor in 3. I hope he's dead, but they set it up so he might not be.
That top down video game like segment was pure euphoric perfection
I just love when directors and cinematographers are proud of their action and stunt work, and insist on no hard cuts or jumping or jitter, but long, slow, beautiful shots of fantastic action sequences and martial arts. If you've paid for the damned action scene, you USE the action scene.
John wick 4 is 3 John wick movies in 1. The first movie is an awesome Japanese style Wick film, the second is John rejoining his family in Germany, then the third movie is John Wick in Paris non stop fighting to kill his mark. Maybe this is the normal 3 act structure but I like seeing it as 3 movies because each act you’re so engrossed in what’s going on, by the end I genuinely forget how great the opening is
I also saw Chapter 4 as the culmination of elements from the previous three films:
- A fight in a nightclub while chasing a target? Chapter 1!
- Miniboss henchmen to fight, a car chase, and the pencil? Chapter 2!
- John fighting alongside other skilled assassins with attack dogs? Chapter 3!
The only channel where I happily watch every ad read. It's honestly inspirational how well tied-in they are
Might be my favorite way of incorporating a sponsor ever…
Seriously Filmento you are the 🐐
What I find about John Wick franchise which sets it apart from other action flicks is it's use of location in general .
15:56. That shot is straight from video games, twin stick top down shooters
Perfect ad integration as always
Why did people love this movie so much? The plot is nonexistent before the ending, it's just John killing random dudes in 3 different locations, like in a storyless videogame
I have honestly no idea, the movie was dumb as fuck
You do realize that a storyless videogame can still be good, right? When the gameplay is so good that the story doesn't matter
@@musthaf9 but that's not a videogame
JW: chapter 4 is easily the best of the series.
The ending was very difficult to watch, knowing that only one of the two friends would walk out alive. The conclusion was smart, surprising and above all satisfying.
I'm glad Chad Stahelski tried something slightly different from a bloody massacre for the final battle scene.
It's easily the worst
It's def not. The first had much more of a emotional personal story.

Ahhh classic filmento mid-video ads. The one and maybe the only channel where I don't skip the promotion for the entertainments it makes. Good work man
Notes writers should take while watching Filmento's videos:
1. virtues that make good plot good,
2. how to include advertisement in video so it's not only smooth, but also fun
The way he set up the ad, absolute masterpiece💯💯
VERY WELL DONE #Filmento! BRAVO!👏🔥
This movie feels like you're playing the very intense action game without even playing it. There are constant objectives to achieve to get to the final showdown, and each of the fights reminds me of video game level design; every level has its own environmental difference or perspective change to keep the gameplay fresh and not repetitive.
JW was pretty repetitive and clumsy.
That dude getting his knee pinned to the wall and getting capped, is by far the most disrespectful kill I’ve seen.
I trust every word of filmento simply because of how his ad moments work. I never see it coming.
John wick is probably the only recent Hollywood franchise that hasn't been ruined yet
Im happy Filmento also points out how the blind assasin doesnt really act like a blind assasin.
Great video! Using the film's location to its potential is soo important and films don't do this enough
I LOVED John wick 4 ❤️ the whole aesthetics, the stunts, keanu… the amazing roundabout sequence, the stairs, the ending.
Everything was good and there was not a boring second
I said I was going to avoid watching Filmento's ads, and I thought I was capable to do so, and I failed again, well played Filmento, well played

You should do a video that teaches other TH-camrs the best way to segue into an ad because your transitions are always so smooth!
Thanky ou so much, i actually learned a lot in this video about how i want my characters to utilise their location apposed to just a generic brawl or fight.
The dragon breath bullets scene remembered me that one scene in Call of duty : Black Ops 1.
Man, what a cinematographic game...!
Hi Filmento,
That John Wick movie is a piece of art in every aspects you can find. Whether it is cinematography, action, combat or music. Everything is perfect about this movie.
I’ve been following you for a while now and I was wondering if you could do the movie Gladiator. I think it is one of the greatest movie of all time (if not the greatest) because of the simplicity of its message : coming back home.
I thank you if you read this comment and congratulate you on your work for this channel. You’re the goat of movie reviews. Keep at it 👍
I've always said, no matter the genre or the budget, a movie always must try to have a memorable element.
That ad was smooth asf
That overhead hotline miami style scene is seriously one of the coolest scenes of all time.
This is by far, the smoothest segwey to the sponsor.🎉 I was hooked and almost did not notice it
I’ve found that even if an action scene is unplanned and only happens because I’m writing a scene where several characters are at odds and in close proximity, I can still make it memorable if I take into account the variables and environment I’ve already put into the scene.
Not gonna lie, you always freaking get me with your ads…. I don’t realize I’m listening to your ad, until I’m like 1/3rd into it, and each time, I’m like dam; you sneaky mofo, you got me again… babbel… legit halfway through it I realized it…. You’re good. Real good. Awesome transition

That dragons breath top down shot, instantly made me feel like i was watching IRL Hotline Miami😂
That dragon breath shotgun scene was god tier

hotline miami dragon's breath, never thought I needed that but I went back to the theatre just for that scene
so in summary:
"different place, different action, and different experience for the viewer"
But he truly was unkillable, which made it unlike the concept John Wick movies. He literally fell from a building and shrugged it off. Else it was mostly a great story.
what story ?
finally someone says it, the stunts were so unrealistic it prevented me from loving the movie like the other 3
@@marianoronix Yeah, the amount of shit John survives tends to be off-putting here aswell, but I love it nonetheless
In the first movie he gets tossed from a balcony in a club, lays there for a few seconds, then shrugs it off.
I just like to assume he is superhuman.
My guy casually up with a great action movie plot and one liner just for a Segway into a sponsor what a legend
2:24
I wasn't prepared for something like that. Thanks for the laugh. The editing is just fire on this one.
So i've discovered your channel during the wonderful years of "The Last Jedi"
Hearing you being this happy about a movie really warms my heart
The best thing about this movie for me is that it knows nobody who is watching will take it that seriously, so it goes buck wild with the scenes and action which makes it really unique in my opinion.
like FF?
Great video as always. You never fail to give me some serious food for thought.
That John wick scene where they’re fighting in that French building is literally the equivalent of killzone liberation. Watching that brought back some memories…
And the award goes to Filmento for the most creative use of an Enya song ever.
i feel like the dragon breath shotgun rounds only work because of the top down shot they decided to incorporate.
That Italian product placement was genius, also The Family Mafia

The john wick movies are so cool - i really liked the roundabout scene with all the other cars from civilians around
The insert ads scenario are getting INSANELY good xD
That's quite art at this point !
