12:00 He has no idea how good this analogy is.... "there are two dogs in each of us" ... and "and the one that wins, is the one you feed the most" - WOW. I hope he remembers this in the upcoming chapters. Incredible insight once again.
I was thinking this very same thing! The inner turmoil Guys goes through once he begins using the Berserker armor almost depicts this exact analogy he made
@deathbypigx3h Spoiler: The malice is manifested before the armour. It starts when he sees Griffith again. Its small. Takes shape of a small dog, and makes hin flip on Casca in that one scene (IYKYK). But when he gets the armour, that amplifies any negative emotions, in this case, his manifestation of his Malice, the beast that feeds inside him making it bigger and harder to control. Till where we are now .. where it's probably the biggest threat to him than anything else.
@@deathbypigx3h Time for a re-read my friend. Gramps got me on my 3rd read through. Gets better each time, because you notice more details - like this one.
I think I agree with the gramps on the "God Thousand-fist Cannon!!". I always saw it as Mozgus (easter island man) attacking with each of the the feathers on his wings all at once rather than it being the shorthand for many quick punches.
Loving the new longer format, it feels more personal and like the ideas you discuss have alot more time to breathe while also getting the jokes in! Fantastic work from my favorite book club lol.
Thank you for this series. I lost my anime loving dad recently, and seeing your dad enjoy and analyze one of my favorite stories brings me more comfort than words can express.
As someone who’s only ever watched the golden age movie and knows some story beats along the way until the most very recent chapters, I have to thank you for bringing me and us on your journey through this and delving into a story that many of us hold dear. 5:13 the throwing knives really make me smile Judeau must have really had a big effect on Guts.
Glad you're enjoying Pops' analysis, it's fantastic as always, but you really should read the manga yourself. If you want you can just take it a few chapters at a time like he's been and treat it like a book club, but there's a lot he doesn't cover and I think you're missing out by not experiencing it on your own. It's very, very worth it.
My reading of how divinity works in Berserk is that the "gods" are nothing but a manifestation of the qualities of mankind. We've seen the "essence of evil" as you refer to it but a better way to think of it is the other translation i've seen of it's title, the "Idea of Evil". The Idea of Evil IS the god of evil in the colloquial sense but it is also just a manifestation of all the evil that lurks within humanity. That does however imply that the Idea of Good also exist, we're seen people do good in this world. It just seems there's far less good than there is evil right now, so the Idea of Good would currently be weaker than the Idea of Evil. It falls onto people like Guts and his crew to champion good and love and kindness and empathy, to spread it where they can so that the Idea of Good can grow. To make the world a place where the Idea of Good can flourish.
glad someone said this. I would definitely agree that it is more accurate to call it the "Idea of Evil", but i'm pretty sure there isn't an idea of good. reason being, the IOE states that it was born from desire, not so much that it's born from evil, but rather the desire for *reasons* whenever something bad happens. "Idea of Evil" fits this description cause it implies there is no good or bad, just the idea of it, that arose from the random evil acts in the world. However i wouldnt say an idea of good is impossible, but, as someone once said on the subject: no one has something good happen to them and then asks "oh god why me?" so its unlikely for an idea of good to manifest, as people dont ask for reasons when good things happen. but it's fun to theorize other gods and such. my theory is close to yours, that gods are more like objects, or manifestations of things and ideas.
i like to imagine gramps being a medieval news reporter, that experiences things live in his studio ans just like us waits for new info(him continuing reading)
About the talk you had wondering « is there a benevolent god in Berserk », I believe one of the topics of the manga is Humanity and its resilience. Guts, even before surnatural appeared to him, always lived a life of hardships that could have turned anyone mad or depressed or bad but never did and kept his humanity even after G’s betrayal - with all the flows humanity means. On the other hand G sacrified any of his humanity (because I believe he had one to begin with) in the pursuit of his dream when faced to a wall. I’m not saying your reading is wrong (in fact I really appreciate it because I’m absolutely not hardwired to see it the way you both do) but what if good in Berserk is really just sparked from good-willing humans, making Humanity sacred in itself ? Anyway thank you for your work, best Berserk/manga review Channel out there ❤
Considering how fascinated you are with the story of Guts, I would recommend checking out the game "Sword of the Berserk: Guts' Rage". Unlike other games that are adaptations, this one has an original story that takes place between volumes 22 and 23 of the manga. In fact, this is the first part of the Berserk media to be officially released outside of Japan (even before the manga itself). This is a good small side story (like Lost Children), Miura himself came up with the plot, characters and designs for them (so the game can be considered canon). If you don’t want to tinker with emulators or just with an outdated game, then I still recommend at least just watching longplay on TH-cam (about 2 hours).
I have to admit, every time I see Guts push himself beyond the limit, it breaks my heart a little because I believe it is a reflection of how Kentaro Miura literally worked himself to death in order to create Berserk. I don't know if that is a "spoiler" for you guys or if you already knew about his passing away.
I love it when Pops by chance is reminded of any Bible examples when going through Berserk. Man I can't wait for y'all to reach the chapters further ahead to see y'all's reaction!
It refreshing hearing real emphathy for Nina as opposed to the shit posting and general negative sentiment around her from the Berserk community. Gramps really changed my perspective of her from the most deplorable human, to "The most human of us all... with her basic instinct to survive." - wow. That's absolutely true.
the idea of evil we see in the lost chapter is more a reflection of the collective consciousness of humanity which is why its so rotten. Later in the story we learn a bit about how the "physics" of berserk works and i dont think theres room for a god like what you'd expect a god to be.
Berserk is love, Berserk is life. Thanks for all your work Crystal, hope you enjoy the next arc. I think it has the best artstyle of the whole series so it'll be amazing to see. As for the God of the good, you'll find out soon that he exists and he's very close to Guts in the form of... you'll have to find out :)
Can't wait! And thank you so much for your kind words, they truly make this all worth it! You guys are all the best and Dad and I feel so lucky to get to make these videos and we are so glad you are enjoying this series!!! 😊
Technically, The Idea of Evil can't be an eternal little-g god because it was essentially created, in a sense, by mankind's own suffering. A man-made god will always be of the little-g variety by definition. In a way, the closest analog for a Christian God would be if you interpret the fairies through a Narnia-like/C.S. Lewis sort of lense. Or maybe Tolkien would be a better comparison.
Its explained that the spiritual world of Berserk has many layers (much like an onion, lol), so its stands to reason that the Idea of Evil is only a few layers beyond our own. This also means an even greater big-G God could still exist, but is in a layer even further beyond. I think this is interesting as it seems like The Idea of Evil is so powerful because its work can be seen everywhere, but in truth, the Good may actually be even more powerful, and its just so beyond the Idea in scope, that its influence seems spread thin. Basically, the Idea of Evil is focusing hard on the one layer in order to gain a proper stronghold before moving up.
@@GBDupreeMmmmmmmh, no. Every time any magic user talked about what is known about the abyss they always implied it's in the deepest layer of the astral world, a level so deep nobody even knows if it even actually exists. It 100% *isn't* a "few layers" below the phisical world, i honestly don't even know from where you're getting that.
I'm glad Guts and Casca are finally reunited and we have a happy ending! I'm thankful things didn't go in a different direction, like Griffith being resurrected and recreating the Band of the Hawk but with demons. That would be horrible.
Me seeing the title "Don't give me hope". Silly aside, Thank you for this video I got recommended your video from another youtuber due to your reactions to what happens during a certain section.
Kentaro Miura had decided to take the idea of evil panels out after publishing the chapter back then but was too late for that thanks to the internet. So there is a theory circulating that either those panels aren't canon, or they were revealed too early for the full story.
I think the Idea of Evil is still ultimately intended; in the exposition dump with Flora and Schierke IIRC they mention that there is a "World of Idea" in addition to the Astral and Material worlds (and the Idea of Evil is really the only time the term Idea has any actual significance) and also speculate there is a higher power that the Godhand serve.
I believe it's a reoccurring theme in Berserk, where one must choose to either attack or defend. Guts chose to defend Casca and his friends. Mozgus chose to attack Guts and let all those people die. Mozgus could have used his fire powers to protect those down below.
For the God of berserk I don’t think one of exist, he isn’t like the God of our world, he was made by the human beings of berserk, that God didn’t create the universe or I’m not even sure if he really did control fate, he is just the human explanation of it, but wow great video gramps and you are so good at these, much love thanks for these
Thanks for the video guys I wish to hear your take about the impression guts is making here from a martial arts standpoint! I mean, what are the people thinking about that human being able to defeat a demon? And what absolute savage battle just happened after years of that little bubbles life
God in berserk Is when guts leaves his fathers bad and is hunted by wolves and nearly dies but still wants to move forward. It's when Guts defies "fate" everyday by still living even though he is branded to death."
I don't think there are any spoilers in this, because it's all just my personal conjecture. I believe that the idea of evil has gotten into a fight with god in this story. (The benevolent one) It didn't win but it did make off with god's right hand. But the idea of evil is just an idea. It can't do anything in the world on its own. So the idea of evil gives it's power out to those who are willing to sacrifice the things that they most love for their own personal gain. And the idea of evil is granting it's "worshippers" power using the severed right hand of god. And the left hand of god does what it can behind the scenes. Like allowing guts to survive birth. Or skull knight to rescue guts and casca.
Griffith’s God is the Idea of Evil as created by man, their selfish desires. Real God is the wind behind Guts group. Forces of good doesn’t directly interfere, it wouldn’t be a character. It would be more like the karma and coincidence that silently pushes against the darkness. There’s a quote I really like “God smiles and watches” he already knows the ending.
I know its not part of the Manga, but thinking of where Guts and Casca's relations are going I can't help but think of the Dreamcast game, most of us Probably won't get to play. Is there any chance at all he'd do an Reaction to that Game? Its only 3 hours long, and its still Written by Miura himself so I see it as Cannon. I'd like to see how he reacts to King Balzak (Yes. That's his Name.) and that good Nun character who appears in it. I'd call it 'The Flowers of Oblivion' arc! (I wish it was written as Manga.)
I've always seen Berserk as highly nihilistic. The world is cruel and goes towards rot, stagnation, stillness. This has been shown in cases like Luka or Guts for now, but will become clearer for gramps in the next few arcs: divinity is seen when the cast rises over it, when they fight against the seemingly insurmountable tides of vileness
I’ve always thought the name “the idea of evil” is kind of misleading for this god-like figure. Because to me everything about him comes across more like a force of nature that came into being from intense negative emotion and a cry for justification of suffering, instead of like a scheming demon king. So I wouldn’t say he’s a manifestation of hatred, just like I wouldn’t say a hurricane is a manifestation of “evil” water, but an outburst of volume
There’s a dark spot on your wall that’s been bothering me. Every so often my eyes drift back to it, and I can’t help but try to scrub it off my screen. Please help.
i disagree, by now casca has gotten much worse. she's been alone in the world dissociating for 2 years without anyone to anchor her to her former self. she literally acts like an infant now, when she was only "really" stilted and traumatized directly after the eclipse. she still had a somewhat sober look on her face.
That’s actually a really good point, she definitely seems like a blank canvas in a lot of ways, apparently when people have a brain injury or even something like dementia you’re supposed to keep them somewhat living there typically routine so the brain has the ability to reestablish those lost connections, and Casca hasn’t had that opportunity and basically hasn’t seen anyone she knows or anything she knows in years, so it would make sense that her brain wasn’t given the chance to reform those connections and memories
"must be a real God out there" - And it is. But not in the sense of the almighty from the bible. Remember that this is a manga and Japanese people usually don't like the interpretation of God in general. ⭐

@@rukakuu_onedaybloodborne_PC could you elaborate?
I always assumed the angel in the book of Daniel was implied to be Michael, I could be wrong though.
4:10 Does your dad know what glazing _actually_ means? 💀

Aside from the fact you enjoy doing both videos and reading, this is actually part cool.
i disagree, by now casca has gotten much worse. she's been alone in the world dissociating for 2 years without anyone to anchor her to her former self. she literally acts like an infant now, when she was only "really" stilted and traumatized directly after the eclipse. she still had a somewhat sober look on her face.
Read the original Devilman manga! :D
Did you drop a hint that gramps is watching one piece?
