Tbh the thing that scares me most about the US eas is that if its on the TV, it scares the shit out of me because something's already wrong (the tv freezes and the sound stops) and then to be hit with that old-ass screen and the loud "THIS IS A TEST OF THE EMERGENCY BROADCAST SYSTEM"

The malaysia one is what tornado sirens and civil defense sirens sound like in the us. You hear the eas one on the radio or on your phone but those are county based, the sirens are more local so most people dont react much to the eas other than stoping to listen and make sure it isnt a bomb threat or something. If the sirens go off, then we run for cover cause its a tornado and its coming for your house.

Idk if this is a thing in other places, but in the Netherlands they will test to see if the alarm still works every first monday of the month at noon. Eventually you get used to it playing at that time so it isn’t as scary as it might be for a foreigner, however when you hear it at any other time something is very wrong, luckily never happened to me before-

That's one of the Earthquake alert systems actually. Since Japan is located on a VERY VERY active fault line, having an earthquake is just another Tuesday for those mfs. Sounding a loud scary alarm all the time would suck. Also yeah, the entire "keeping people calm" thing is also true. But yeah. I was in Japan for like 2 weeks and went through like 3 separate earthquakes. (Relatively light ones, of course. Also I am a heavy sleeper so I ended up sleeping through most anyways) and if I had to wake up to that twice a week I'd hate it. Also that one is TV exclusive. Half of the Japan alarms in this video were only for earthquakes (Some being house alarms, some being phones, and sirens.)

Fun fact: There are actually levels to the types of eas alarms sent out in Japan, each one for a certain degree of danger! The one you just heard was the first level.
Edit for those wondering: Because of all the tsunamis that Japan has gone through in the past, there are different level eas designed for how far away the waves are. The closer the tsunami gets to the land, the more urgent the eas alarms get. I think there is three tsunami eas alarms in total? I don’t remember since it’s been a while since I researched the subject, so please feel free to correct me if I’m wrong

The reason Japan’s alarm is all cutesy is because, when in panic, everyone becomes disorganized and everyone will rush. So combat this, the Japanese government went “hey, we need to calm everyone down, so everyone will remain calm”
I thought it was because they were Japanese and there’s legit millions of them and it doesn’t matter if they die because a majority of the Japanese population has accepted that there is no afterlife and majority of Japanese are atheist, therefore making life meaningless to begin with and the coming catastrophic event more bearable because nothing matters anyway.
