As someone who’s just a few years into my skincare-making journey, I really appreciate you sharing your fails with us and not just the success stories. We get to learn alongside you.
Going in, I thought I would know more than I do 2 years into making skincare & body products regularly but actually, learning how little I know and how we should never stop learning has been the best lesson of all. 💜

    • @persephonespomegranate

@@yamamahtayama6985 hi there, sorry I never saw your question until just now when I happened to be rewatching this old vid. Not sure if you meant this question for me or for Tara but I can help. This will be a long answer, though! I hope it helps you:
Basically, there are two main, different types of products you can make: water-based products (anything that includes distilled water, hydrosols or floral waters, aloe vera, glycerin) OR anhydrous products which are made solely with oil ingredients (carrier oils, butters, essential oils). Technically there’s a third which is powder products like powdered face masks (that are sold without water so that they can be marketed as preservative free), body powder, dry shampoo etc.
Water-based products ALWAYS require a preservative. It’s non-negotiable. Anhydrous products do not need a preservative EXCEPT for products that will almost certainly come into contact with water, either a nearby water source (such as products stored in the shower or directly beside your sink) and/or products that you’ll be dipping wet or potentially dirty fingers into. A good example would be body or face scrubs that are made only with oils and butters but still should include a preservative because chances are, water will be introduced just through the course of using it day to day.
Powdered products don’t need a preservative but they can contain food grade ingredients (arrowroot powder or corn starch, for example), clays and dried botanicals (dried rosebuds, etc) and these things can and will eventually spoil (especially if contaminated from dirty hands) so you should throw a product out if the smell changes or anything seems off. And of course, everything has a shelf-life, whatever the product, even water-free, anhydrous products that’s have been preserved and so you’ll need to research further to get guidance on the recommended shelf-life of each product you make.
As to which preservative to use, it’s not as easy a question to answer as there’s no single preservative that will work for everything. Different types of formulations require different types of preservative. And yes, there are natural options out there (“natural” being a bit of a loaded word to start with), but IMHO, you really need to be more advanced as a formulator and be testing your products over the course of its intended shelf life with at home lab testing kits to play around with the truly natural preservatives with confidence (eg elderberry extract, aspen bark).
The exception is Leuicidal SF Complete (fermented radish root) which I feel more confident in recommending to beginners but please read the manufacturer’s literature and make sure you’re using it to spec. Note that natural does not mean safe: I’m allergic to Leuicidal and can’t use it, but many home formulators, including Tara, do use it to great success.
There’s also a preservative called Geogard ECT which, while I don’t know that it would be considered natural, uses ingredients that I bet most people would feel safe using (I have something called Multiple Chemical Sensitivities due to moderate to severe ME / CFS so this is a preservative I’m personally starting to use more as I move away from Liquid Germall Plus). Optiphen Plus although not plant based (if that’s your definition of “natural”), is also widely used in the green cosmetic industry.
In summary, you’ll need to research the best preservatives for each individual product you want to formulate, see what preservatives are appropriate and decide which ones you’re comfortable with from there. As a beginner, I suggest doing what I did which was to brainstorm the top 10 products I wanted to learn to make over my first year of home formulating and then I wrote out the formulas for each (or print out existing formulas offered by knowledgeable teachers such as Tara and also Marie from Humblebee and Me), and then I ordered my first ingredients haul based off of those formulas so I knew I’d have the right ingredients before I started mixing things willy-nilly 😊 Following other peoples formulations (such as Tara’s recipes) are a great way for beginners to make sure they’re combining the right ingredients in the right ratios to make safe products, while they concentrate on learning techniques.
Tara has a video on preservatives if any of this didn’t make sense: th-cam.com/video/7Es0IXepClc/w-d-xo.html
And she also has a recent video about the issues surrounding the focus on “natural” products in the beauty industry. Humblebee and Me has a great blog post about it to. (I mention only because I changed my tune on the pursuit of all things “natural” the more I learned about ingredients and the science of formulating - I am now ok with using chemicals I wasn’t ok with a few years ago - but this is really an individual thing to decide for yourself). Happy formulating!

Oh - there’s also one called Plantaserve-E Natural that I ordered on Amazon from Mystic Moments in the UK (delivered to Canada through Amazon) that seems to be working well for me. But note that the INCI name for some of these more “natural” preservatives may look scary but you may be totally fine with the ingredients once you research what they are, eg Phenoxyethanol/Ethylhexyglycerin is what you’d see listed on an ingredient label for a product that is preserved by Plantaserve.

Generally speaking, polymers are electrolyte-sensitive material, which is why it wasn’t compatible with catatonic, anionic, cheating agents, and any ingredient with the name “acid”. Also you can’t adjust the final pH with carbomer. Check the pH, but never adjust ✅ Hope that helps!
Oh! Polymers like carbomer are also shear sensitive. Only use low shear with polymers. High shear will irreversibly cut the polymer chains.

It's not a plastic. It's a dried petroleum jelly. Petroleum jelly can be used to make plastic, but, it is not plastic. It's a clean biproduct from processing oil into fuel. It has no known side effects for external and cosmetic uses. I dont use it myself, but, since there are No known side effects from using it, there is no reason to sound a fake alarm. It's been used for over 75 years in most store bought, body products, so, I'm sure if there was any real concerns, we'd know them by now. Oh, and, I'm an actual biochemist, that does independent studies, with no agendas.

I don't think it would feel very nice having honey in a moisturizer. I also don't think you can add food grade oats to a moisturizer safely without the product spoiling really quickly. You could add honeyquat to a moisturizer or honey extract. As for the oats you can use oat extract they sell it here - www.formulatorsampleshop.com/FSS-Colloidal-Oat-PF-p/fss10116pf.htm
