SHELLING IN A STORM - Arctic, Cold Water SHELL haul

  • Nor’easter's are storms that occur along the eastern coasts of the US and Canada, and are called "Nor'easter's" because the winds over the coastal area are typically from the northeast. Nor'easter storms are most frequent between September and April.
    Come along on this adventure while I attempt to document shell collecting during a Nor'easter storm - we will be out shelling during the storm itself, and in the 2 - 3 days that follow the storm. Boy, do we find some shelly goodies!

    ...so glad that you put yourself out in all that coldness to search for such beautiful finds! Thanx for letting me tag along and, also, I purchased, as an Xmas present to me; a 43" LG 4K TV to replace the 32" I had over my desk in my office where I watch all these adventures. Hi friend! There are 3 types of scallops that can be found in the waters of the Gulf of Maine... The Deepsea Scallop, the Atlantic Bay Scallop, and the Iceland Scallop - they are all pretty and uniquely ornate. But yeah, the Iceland's are really nice!

    As always you provide us with great views of interesting places to shell and uncommon finds. I think when you brave cold and winds to shell hunt you have elevated yourself to a true shellunatic! Love it! I enjoy seeing the shell fragments to to a peek out what has traveled to the beach, without those fragments one would never know what has made a journey which makes it all the more exciting when you do find an uncommon shell intact. Thanks for taking us along! 😎

      @@solaceinshelling6552 So are u ready to be shelling with this storm (Diaz) that started here on the West Coast and hitting the Northeast? I wish I could send u some video of what was like a sandstorm we had here in northern San Diego County - basically had to walk parallel to the ground and brace yourself for the sand and gale force wind - yeah I'm a little obsessed getting down to the beach 😄 shell on!

    Another amazing video. Through your videos I've come to appreciate the cold water shells since they are not as colorful as the Florida shells. But they have a beauty all their own that I appreciate now. I love the Iceland scallops! And thanks for highlighting the rocks at the end--I love rocks also!

    • @solaceinshelling6552
      @solaceinshelling6552  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi friend! So funny that you mention the color of shells here - I have some super colorful shells from Maine and Canada that can rival some of my most colorful shells from Florida, haha! Iceland Scallops in general are usually VERY colorful(pink, red, purple and even orange), but most of the ones found in the Gulf of Maine are the dark blue color because they were sitting in hypoxic(low oxygen) sediment for a period of time.
      I have read that variations in color and pattern in shells in warm/tropical latitudes, are due to the greater diversity of food sources in tropical waters. I am very happy to see that many of my viewers have notated the beauty and variety of ocean creatures that exists in the colder regions of the ocean, like Maine!
      Thanks so much for watching!

    Thank You so much for taking us Down East Maine! Most of us Westerners (I'm in Sacramento, CA) hear/see very little of Maine; it's always a treat for me when you go shelling in Maine (actually anywhere, but Maine is so interesting and beautiful). My favorite shell you found, hmmm, it's tough, I love them all, but I would say the Neptune, Iceland Scallop, and of course, the Moonsnail. Thanks again, I always look forward to your vids ❤️ 🐚 oh, and the Fall Colors were gorgeous!

    I love all the blues and dark shells. I live in southern New Jersey and got into shell picking more last year. We get half and half some dark some light but the dark ones are very cool nice finds!

    • @solaceinshelling6552
      @solaceinshelling6552  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi friend! The darker blues, grays and blacks on shells like this are most often a result of that shell sitting in sediment that is hypoxic(low in, or lacking oxygen) for a period of time. Then, wave action will cast the shells onto the beach!
      Thanks for watching!

      Hi friend! I have tried to incorporate stones into my content as often as possible. I don't know if it's illegal to remove stones from the beach...though I do know there are some locations in Maine where removing stones from the beach IS explicitly prohibited). With that said, any time anything is removed from a natural environment, the risk of disturbing the ecosystem is present. These stones stayed on the beach, but looked great on the camera!

Some of my favorite places are Biddeford Pool, Old Orchard Beach(especially after stormy weather), Peaks Island(Casco Bay), Popham Beach(Midcoast), and Jasper Beach(Downeast Maine).
