- I took a Saab 9-5 Aero out to the Elan Valley... here's the mini documentary and review of the car, as well as a whole heap of scenery and commentary. The music (without the words) is Jimmy Eat World - Your House, from the album Bleed American, which is probably my favourite album of all time...

The Saab 9-5 is like a Swedish army knife, versatile, capable and has a keen edge. The 2002 on models have deeper seat bolsters to keep you in place while blasting past caravans.
Yeah that was honestly my only complaint all day. Through the valleys I was in the wrong car, on the B road blast back I couldn't have been in a better car.
I feel that's subjective to what you move from into a phase one 9-5. I have an 02 mercedes ml270 and when I hop into my 9-5 wagon, it feels like I'm sitting in a recaro!
My early Aero awaits for me when Im done with my 12h swifts and it's always a pleasure driving It back home. No better place to be at when you are so tired. Also if you want to have fun, this car will let you with a big smile in your face.
Absolutely, easy to drive and comfy and a happy place to be
Great video. Loved the road trip format. These 9-5s are such good cars. Real shame that Saab is no longer with us. Their cars weren't objectively better than the competition but once you had one, they got you hooked. Just something likeable about them.
In many ways it’s astonishing you can buy them so cheaply here in the UK. Grab the early (pre GM) 9-5 and 9-3 while you can!
Bloody love these! I’ve had about 8 or so within the last few years.
Currently have a 2005 9-3 Aero Hirsch Stage 2, a 2005 9-5 shark tooth Aero HOT with all options, and a 2004 9-5 Vector Sport manual wagon.
Wonderful cars.
Very nice! Bet that Hirsch car is rapid
@@GeoffBuysCars quicker than our e46 M3!
If you ever sell that 05 9-5...... :)

Nice vid. Great car. Keep your 9-5s in shape, like I do with my 9-5 Estate. This car is not just a car, its a statement!
Right on!
Love Saab. I have a 2006 93 Aero 210hp.Only ever had one advisory for tyres. All parts original with the exception of the throttle body, a caliper and a rear spring which snapped and I only realised when it was hoisted up for a fuel filter! Now at 138k miles and going strong.
As a SAAB enthusiast and potential soon-to-be 9-5 Aero owner, I found this review to be incredibly insightful. I had no idea Ewan McGreor was so funny! 😅 Jokes aside, thanks Geoff for this honest review of the Saab (and the cornish pastie). The review was helpful, as I do a lot of long driving stretches and need a replacement after my 2004 9-3 died. Happy motoring and safe travels ✌🏻
Editing on this is fantastic. Very nice video. And I think I fell in love with the turbo spool on the SAAB.
Thanks for the compliment...! Really enjoyed making this, wasn't sure what the feedback would be :-)
Love the 9-5, got a OG 9-3 convertible LPT , supposedly only 154 bhp but feels more at times. Impressed with refinement of B204 engine too . Saab still put their input into building individual cars and not following the modern manufacturing norm to make something as cheap as possible.
Totally agree that the 154hp feels more. As I say in the video it’s down to how Saab makes the car feel light whilst still having great build quality.
love those wheels. fits the og 9-5 shape so well
Another great video, yeah definitely more road trips.... also I completely agree with you,the red aero wagon mid range was awesome that car was soooooo bloody quick 😁
..there are no hills :)
@@TimBennettUK I'm excited and you know why.
Awesome video more please 🙌 lovely motor too
Thanks buddy! More coming! Where shall I go?
@@GeoffBuysCars look forward to that. The Lake District is a nice drive out 👍
Had this exact car but with grey interior. from 2003-2008. Miss it so much. Stage 2, was a sleeper
I have a manual 2004 9-5 Arc, same engine as Aero, only slightly de-tuned with a less sporty suspension. I've always loved Saab and even worked for a Saab dealer for a while. I bought this 9-5 with low mileage to mostly go on summer road trips in Canada. It's such a great highway car. It's also very capable in winter conditions, which is important where I live; it's from Sweden after all! Its beautiful looks is the cherry on top. They're quite rare over here and it will definitively turn the heads of car enthusiasts.
It has a different turbo to the Aero too - a Garret GT28 rather than a Mitsubishi TD04
Great video. Great car. Great presenter👏👏👏
Enjoyed the video and thought it all looked familiar, indeed mine's a 2001 9-5 Aero with a stick and 62K on the clock. But the real familiarity was the Elan valley which I did on a Douglas Dragonfly in 1963, It looks a lot more touristy these days. I wish I could bring mine home and do it again. Thank you.
I have 2006 95 2.3T Universal imported from USA. It's like AERO, but for USA market universals models were called Sport wagon.
Another great video saab is a yes from me a great car😊😊😊
Thanks buddy!
My 2.3T Ecopower needed its turbo replaced so we put the HOT in and a factory licensed Hirsch tune, so 305bhp/310ft.lbs. Same power and weight as the last WRX STI, looks like Grandpa's car. Only thing the Aero has is the xenon and fog lights, I've just got bar blanks and pearl halogens but there's no body kit or anything on the 06 Aero. They get 7 or 9 speakers I think, I've got 5. Put some prefab Italian 3" with twins which sounds excellent on the throttle, a bigger intercooler. My 190E is supposed to be the project car, the Saab is just the daily hack. Such a great comfy and luxurious cheap car though, happy to spend a bit of money on it and it gives you so much back.
A sorted 9-5 is such a great car. These first generation pre -02 ones have something special going on, very well put together, more of the 9000 solidity and fit and finish. Sad that it's getting real hard to find a good one.
You're spot on. This one has gotten under my skin.
@@GeoffBuysCars I can see that! Silver sedan with Klingons is just such a timeless look for a 9-5. And automatic is the right way to go for these cars, even with this 4-speed AW-50.
Just discovered your brilliant channel. It's like we are of one mind. I love buying crap old cars that nobody sane can understand me buying. I've been searching for a winter car with "character" to go alongside my rusty old MX5 summer banger. In the last year I've had a 2001 CR-V, then a 1994 Volvo 940 (averaged 15mpg), then a 2004 Passat tdi with 235000 on the clock (should have kept that), then a 2002 Mercedes S210 E320 cdi which near got me divorced, and finally, with that disaster having temporarily taken all the fun out of cars, I sold it for peanuts, sold the MX5, and have now bought a Focus st170 for a grand, which it turns out has been clocked by 71000 miles. Absolutely love it but I've started hankering after a Saab 😬
Oh but it’s winter and those S320cdis are SO appealing right now!!
Great cars, have had mine for 7 ish years, started life as a 2.3t auto estate now running stage 1 aero engine, only one problem in this time, slight hole in piston but has had 60+k miles of umm abuse ha comfy car aswell..
Average around 27mpg around town and 40 ish on a run
I may have the red 2.3t estate coming back to the channel...
just found your channel and subscribbed , i love your taste in cars and attitude , but yes a review as your driving wud be great please
Ah welcome Stu, and thanks for the compliment! Have a look back through some of my other reviews, there's a lot of Swedish content to digest!
Great video,more please
The lack is rain really is obvious from the water levels. I've never owned or driven a Saab and to be honest, this needs to change. I've always been more of a Volvo fan but I do really like Saab very much and was saddened to learn of their demise a few years ago.
Yes please, do more roadtrips with all of your cars.
Have now made a 'road trips' playlist with some of the older trips in too. More to come!
The worst thing about this is it's made me realize how my I miss the 95 areo I had
Supertidy 9 5 (somehow 9 5 and 9 3:s still looks contemporary). Beautiful landscape. Unfortunately there’s no ferry’s from Scandinavia to the UK any longer. (Please correct if ‘m wrong)
Is that photo of the blue Saab at Malvern college?
Yeah! Used to take all my photos there
I drove through the UK in my OG9-5’s (one being a Vector 2.3 and the other being a Dame Edna Aero). Great cars and the 2002 (and onwards) Vector and Aero seats are much better than the 1998-2001 models. Not that these are bad (still way better than most German seats 🤣), but especially lumbar support is so much better in the 2nd gen OG9-5’s (Vector and Aero that is😉).
So time to fix those buttons and the louvre around the gear selector. Nice review
Enjoyed that one Geoff, a few more like it wouldn’t go amiss it not as if you don’t have the cars is it?
Exactly! I really like this style of video so I'm glad people seem to agree.
I learnt to drive around Elan reservoirs . not an ideal place but at least stayed on the road 😅
I am currently finishing a 2002 project 9-5 that I saved from being either scrapped or sold for a gumball rally (and then scrapped). It was tatty and unloved, with no history, shit paintwork, and needing extensive restoration. Many months and many many thousands of dollars later, it is now at 305bhp/450nm, and has embarrassed quite a few Golf Rs and STis. It's an auto, so I had the torque limiter removed, which gives it pretty much unbeatable performance off the mark, which has always been a Saab weak point. It still looks stock apart from the 3" Krona exhaust, and most people (ie not Saab enthusiasts) just dismiss it as a grandad car, then gape as it scorches away over the horizon.
The 02-on models have way better seats, probably a contender for the 9000 Aero seats in terms of comfort. And their quality is unreal; mine are almost like new even after 20 years and 230000kms. Yes,I've spent way more money on it than I can ever hope to recoup. But I saved a Saab, and in the process I built a monster that will keep up with pretty much anything. It's the perfect Q car. Cops ignore it, boy racers ignore it, car thieves ignore it, and nobody wants to key it in a fit of jealousy.
Nice car ...want one 😮
loved that "roads full of idiots, full of tractors (...) you just need something that when that little bit of road opens up (...) you can go" that sums it up on this car!
Loving your Saab videos. Currently have a 2011 9-3 ttid 160bhp. What's your thoughts on the 9-5 Dame Edna 2.3 Hot Aero?
SAAB FOREVER ❤️
i want it!
Here we go again!
Always a man of the mystery box I’m not sure it would get that far this time!!!
fast swedish quality cars volvo and saab👍🏁🇸🇪
Amen
Loved it not at all boring
My 95 Aero only really got low 20MPG. That was the only downside
Was hoping for walk around of car as its stunning and looks it ....but that's just me .........like you do with the vooolvoos ......just saying thou lol
That's coming next, one more vide on the Saab because it has some really interesting history.
Missing pixels is a £50 ish fix
Ah that's great to know dude
@@GeoffBuysCars get the clothes iron out do it yourself 😁

Was it not thirsy?!
Stop trying to get me to buy a 9-5. I’ve only just got an MX5.
Ha ha, sorry!
Love Wales. Except for Drakefraud and his cronies trying their best to take all the enjoyment out of driving.
Thanks for popularising this poor brand
