Portuguese legacy and RICH HISTORY of a small Asian capital: exploring Dili, Timor-Leste

  • I've spent a day on November 6, 2022 exploring Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste, learning its rich history while admiring Portuguese colonial legacy.
    Started my walk at the Government Palace, I walked to Motael Church and took a taxi to Timor Plaza. In the evening I visited Colmera neighborhood.
    The other day, on November 9, 2022, I visited Santa Cruz cemetery to learn about how some sad events changed the history of the country towards independence.
    Stayed in a Plaza Hotel Dili for $76 a night. Shown my spacious room in the end of the video.
    Filmed on:
    November 6, and November 9, 2022
    Filmed with:
    DJI Osmo Action 3
    iPhone 13 Pro
    Edited with:

    I am Timorese Portuguese,, I grew up in Timor, a lot of Portuguese descendants liked East Timor, and when Timor got independence they are the ones who had to lead the Timor Struggle for independence along with TImorese people, that later changed into mostly Tiomorese led struggle against INdonesian attrocities and rejection for Indonesian identity. Timor has a lot of crazy history, Yes Timor is relatively poor and difficult place, but the Timorese people still believes in hopes, to improve their country from scratch. Thats the story of the island. the portuguese were not as ruthless as the Indonesian, i like to make that clear, because the portuguese were mostly using Timor as an Outpost for their maritime exploration, and Timor was their most forwards outpost to MACAU china.

    good to see something of Timor Leste, a small country with a big potential! Especially us, Latinamericans should have much more interest in places like this one, since we also share somehow the same colonial background and cultural roots... AND since some of us are ASEAN members since the beginning, we should also think in economic terms, because Timor Leste has many opportunities left open for entrepreneurship, in almost every realm you could think of! Of course Australia and Indonesia are the countries that could have the biggest influences over Timorese development in the future, but bold and clever Latinamericans could also, especially under the frame of ASEAN and Alianza del Pacifico common markets. I guess not many of our businessmen/women here have realized this, especially in Brazil, Chile, Peru... When I was in Darwin, Australia I always wondered why. In any case Timor could have a bright future if it makes the right development decisions (could start from 0, offering something different than all the others) and gets the right partners (hopefully not communist China), this "internationalisation" of its economy and political alliances is also important in order to keep balance with Indonesian expansionist spirit (see West Papua, "transmigrasi", etc.) Por isso é tambem importante manter uma identidade propia, reforçando especialmente os laços com a comunidade lusofona e iberodescendente!

      @@SoAndrew : Great! I've been to Singapore once. Loved it. Thank you 😊 was it fairly easy to get from Singapore to East Timor?. I've been to Russia twice and the Ukraine once…had a nice vodka with a local guy by the river in Kiev.

    • @SoAndrew
      @SoAndrew  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@lecirdaluz Haha! Ukraine is amazing historical place! It is very easy and cheap to travel all around Southeast Asia (starting from $50 only)! Except Timor-Leste - there are only 2 international flights coming to Dili - from Bali and Darwin (Australia) and both are at least $450 return (!). This is a big NO for many tourists so they choose much cheaper destinations. From Bali it's only 2-hour daily flight and visa on arrival is issued for $30. Immigration process is very fast and simple, as in any other Southeast Asia country. From Singapore to Bali return flight I found for only around $100. But Brazil is at the opposite side of Earth so will be more difficult to get there 😅
