$5 Flea Market Rusty Axe Restoration. Woodworking & Metalworking.

  • This is my first Axe Restoration experiment ever. I picked up this axe for $5 at the local flea market. I wanted to make something unique, so I decided to electro-etch a design in the axe head. I then went in with a rotary tool to bore out the etch even deeper and giving it a unique roughed up effect. For the handle, I constructed it similar to a knife with a full steel tang running throughout the handle. For the scales I used a beautiful pieces of Walnut and Maple. I really liked how this axe turned out and I enjoyed restoring it (But enjoyed testing it even more). Let me know what you think!

Looks like a really functional handle, too. Not sure I've ever seen one with a full tang - or whatever, a piece of steel running the length of it. Should be strong and flexible! Part of the big problem with axes and shovels is wood handles that may break. The multi-piece construction of wood (a grip, really) in the video seems like you'd have to really try to get a break in it - maybe drive a truck over it or something.

    • @_s_9920
      @_s_9920 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@davesmith5656 theres a reason you've never seen a composite wooden handle with a layer of metal sandwiched inbetween, this would've been possible long before the Viking/Anglo-Saxon era but they didn't do it for the same reason. Wood will take a massive impact before splintering or bending if shaped, treated and cared for properly especially from the correct wood species it will also help the recovery time of the person wielding preventing unessasary impact transfer to the arm, this on the other hand ensures that the impact will travel unevenly distributed along the handle into the the poor wielder's hand, wrist and arm not to mention the fact that after an hour or so of real use it will begin to warp, bend and become loose, eventually falling apart back into it's three layers after the pegs shear from the sideways force.

This is essentially how i support my smithing hobby. I offer to repair old knives and tools for people, in exchange for a moderate sum (much less than a real [professional, but i do pride myself in doing good work, or their money back.)
Most of the stuff i do is old war memorabilia that has more sentimental value than cash value. I've done a few trench knives, and a couple of bayonets, which were pretty damn cool. I remember one, the knife was completely trashed, they found it in a box of their great granddad's stuff, and water had gotten into the lockbox. Rusted so badly that when i attempted to remove the rust, parts of the knife started flaking off in giant chunks.
A quick call, and i ended up getting one of my first 'new knife' commissions. I made the closest thing to a replica i could manage (a lot of the finer details were lost due to the rust) and even reused the heavy duty handle, and the pommel piece. they were happy with it, even though it wasnt properly tempered, since it was just going to be displayed with their Great Granddad's flag.
He was a WWI veteran, and i ended up making no money off that, because well, i may be an asshole, but i am not that much of one.

There is no money in the world to pay for real talent and you have it(I mean talent...).To some people making comments on how much money in equipment one needs to create something like that, I'll say that they don't have enough imagination. Look into PCB etching to see a fast way to etch a design. Art is printed to a laser printer, the applied to metal, then paper removed (gently with water and rubbing), then metal is entirely dipped in an etchant and everywhere the black 'ink' from the design does not appear, is etched. So, invert the design when printing to the printer. Ferric chloride is used for copper etchant - maybe use for steel too? You turned an old axe into something beautiful - love it.

What a beautiful job you have done, that's something to be proud of 👍
I especially liked the shaping of the handle, the way you was just feeling the shape as you went along was nicely done.
It reminded me a little bit of a job I did a while back, I made a breakfast bar top for a trendy cafe out of 1" Birch ply, it was 16 feet long and about 12"-18" deep I shaped the ends like a Fender Strat and I continued the wave pattern for the whole 16 feet and finished the other end also like the Strat body !
I put a half round ish bullnose all the way around just using an old Black and Decker belt sander & of course hours and hours of hand sanding the plywood edge, I finished it by spraying 2k clear laquer with a clear turquoise tint in it getting darker towards the rounded edge, it came out better than I could have ever hoped for. One of the few times I was really pleased with my work, most work stuff is so mundane now 😕
Could have made a good TH-cam video but it was over 30 years ago !
Looking forward to watching more of your vids & thank you I need a bit of inspiration these days to do something creative again ! just sub'd 👍

That steel tang you put down the middle will channel all the vibration from the axe head, down the shaft, to your hands. Good for knifes but not for an axe or maul. Nice decorative piece tho and a great project.

Did not think about that.... That makes sense.

    • @fenderstratguy

Yes, that steel will reduce handle flex drastically; however, as you state, it's a really beautiful job, and a great showpiece. He meant it for display anyway.

Don’t split any wood with it again. Not only is it too beautiful to risk getting sap or pitch on the head, the difference between the wood and the metal will cause the walnut and the ash to separate from each other and the metal, but that will put all the force on the pins.
That’s what my brother the engineer said when I showed this to him. I told him he doesn’t understand art. Thanks for sharing and for making the steps and process clear.

as an avid axe user i can tell you that:
    A: axe looks beautiful
B: it would the worlds axe worst to use
the handle would be so stiff and rigid you couldn't use it for more than 4-5 swings before you hands felt like hamburger. You can inlay steel wire into the wood with Epoxy without loosing the much needed flex and get the effect of a nice looking handle.
    love watching the videos tho

Love the work on the head, the handle's wicked too. Quick tip for your swing, if you (or anyone) at all cares. Move your right hand a little further toward the head, then on your down swing, slide your right hand down to touch your left. You'll generate far greater head speed and it's a more efficient stroke. If you ever have to chop a cord, it'll save you a lot of work.
