The saving Snapes life i think refers to when Sirius let it slip that they were going to the shrieking shack, then Snape follows them and if he were to go further he would have met Lupin as a full warewolf but James stopped him, thereby "saving" his life.
You are absolutely right! I read that bit, as I'm a week ahead, and got myself confused when remembering it. hehe
Yeah idk if that really qualifies as saving his life though, I feel like James did it so they wouldn't get in trouble
I always thought that Neville had the passwords on his bedside table and crookshanks stole them for Sirius. I guess I just made that up my head 😹 funny how your mind just fills things in!

Popping in (after laughing at myself and telling Matt about it) to say, nope, you did not make that up in your head. It's literally in the next chapters (as I just read the one it's in). You just ... I don't know, have a memory that doesn't deceive you, unlike me, where I read these books ages ago and don't remember a damn things. Oh boy. 🤦♀

Trewlony's prediction actually came true! There were 13 people before Trewlony entered (Scabbers was there), and Dumbledore rose first, and he was the first to die

I appreciate the discussion on Hermione :). I know it's pretty basic, but she has always been my favorite character. We'll see if that changes upon this re-read of the series!
I was a bit torn, because I could see both sides (Hermione getting the broom taken for safety vs. Harry/Ron wanting to keep the broom to win the Quidditch Cup). I was a bit angry at Hermione, because I think she could have approached it better. She could have spoken to Harry and Ron first, explaining that she was worried Sirius had sent the broom and that it might be cursed. That would have given Harry the option of turning in the broom himself. I know he might not have done that (he seemed pretty set on keeping it), but at least it would have been his choice. I think going over his head and straight to a teacher was the wrong thing to do. (She only explained she thought Sirius had sent the broom after it had been confiscated by McGonagall)
Re-reading the books, she's become one of my favorites too, and I suspect that will only grow ... especially once we get to SPEW.
I totally get that. If someone did that to me, I'd be upset. I think the reason it didn't bother me here is she's come to really know Harry and had a limited time (in her mind, especially if it had a jinx) to be sure he was safe. And I feel like later, seeing Harry and Ron be so entrenched in quidditch and that broom, that they forget their friend and their other friend needing help with Buckbeak, that they only proved Hermione's point and actions. But again, I get it because I, like you, deeply believe in us having the chance to choose ourselves. It's a tricky one.

I noticed the comment about Peter being like Neville and it struck me as odd. I suppose they can be seen as the weaker ones in their friends group. I think it shows the two ways that Peter could have gone and it’s building Neville up to his big finish. Neville is damaged and would be considered a trauma victim I think and his traits are probably due to the childhood trauma of losing his parents and being brought up by a family who see him as a failure and compare him to his parents bravery.
I think when Harry fetched the broom cleaning kit there is nothing he can do as the fire bolt bristles are so straight.
Do we see the Committee for the Disposal of dangerous creatures in Fantastic Beasts? Is that who Newt goes up in front of at the Ministry and they try and ban him from travelling? Think it’s the second film.
I also loved that illustration of Buckbeak. I would love that framed.
I’m sure the twins mention somewhere that Molly always takes more care with Harry’s jumpers than her children’s. That would be an amazing piece of merchandise. There are quite a few different ones that molly does for Harry. I’m sure there’s a golden snitch one as well.
The Christmas meal is one scene I’m really looking forward to seeing in the series. I’ve seen theories that Dumbledore is actually the first one to rise and that’s why he dies first but I’m not sure about that.
I think that Neville does not actually lose the passwords but that a creature steals them from him.
Oh I love seeing the deleted scenes. They all should have been included in the films as they add so much. I’ve tried to find DVDs with the scenes included but haven’t been successful so far.
I am finding Harry and Ron to be thoughtless arseholes so far in this book 😂😂 they are so unpleasant to Hermione who is basically correct in all she says and does. I feel really sorry for her and I really understand her actions.
I had written down that Snape is speaking the truth and then you were both saying that. He may be bitter and spiteful but he definitely understands that Harry is being reckless and thoughtless.
We find out more about the situation with Snape and the life endangering situation later on. It is something that Sirius sets up to put Snape in danger from Lupin as a werewolf and James realises what’s happening and stops it. Snape is so bitter that he refuses to accept that James wasn’t involved in the first place.
We do see Snape trying to express his concerns about Lupin being a professor when they are hiding in their sleeping bags in the great hall and Snape is trying to convince Dumbledore that there is someone helping Sirius from inside Hogwarts.
Some of my favourite chapters are coming up next so I’m really looking forward to reading and discussing those 🐈🐀🐕

Ooooo you kinda gave me chills there because it really is. It's why when I see people make poor choices (ie shoot up a school ... boy that got dark, Aubrey 😄) because of their trauma but see someone else do differently in their life who also had a similar trauma, do good things and get out of that situation ... be a reminder that we have the option of what path we want to go down. It back to the quote in Chamber of Secrets:
“It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”
But also, dang had Neville had trauma, not just with his family, but continued on into school by students and teachers. It makes my heart hurt because I can see me in him, and anyone who is different, not be met where they are and who they are, but be criticized for not being 'normal.' .... Anywho, I tangented. 🤣

I understand her actions too. It's weird because I can see myself in both of them. I was reckless but also wanted to 'do right' as a kid.

@@LoveLumos I think that’s why Neville is one of my favourite characters because he goes in such a journey and he is totally a good person in every way. And yes I agree he is an outsider that we can all bond with as I’m sure many of us were not part of the in crowd and we’re always a little different. That’s an interesting comparison with school shooters as we often hear they had a bad childhood etc but there are plenty of others who have terrible childhood experiences but rise above that and make good choices in life.
The theory about Dumbledore is that he rises when Trelawney comes to the table. Thus being the first to rise.
So excited to continue with this book. Going to read the next chapters tomorrow 👏👏👏
