In the old days my Panasonic plasma V series, i used CNET recommended calibration. 2 pages, the picture and color accuracy was fantastic and flat. Different technology I know but I guess nothing like that available for a woled like G4?
@@tomdemeo2708 On average I calibrate two televisions per week. Often the same display. The Sony A95L. Final results have shown White Balance values are almost always different. This is due to panel variance. It was the same situation with Plasma as well. Point being your television may have looked “better” or more improved than it had previously but I’m almost certain it would have still shown potentially substantial errors, and could not be classified as accurate.
If there was anything like that, all the TVs would come with best picture settings by default. It's a subjective matter of taste for each customer, there isn't and can't be a general guideline for best settings.
@@Sas-wk9lj Recommended settings from people who know what they're doing are often helpful. We can argue the reasons for that, and I'd agree that no one's recommendations are going to work equally well for everyone, but it's often the case that they make things better for *many* people.
YES PLEASE 🙏! why don’t every TV just come with an ISF bright and Dark setting, like LG? Apple’s iPad Pro, M4 tendo OLED has no settings for display besides brightness and true tone and that’s the best display you’ll ever see.

I agree that we isn't go to do this per model, but he did offer to so so per Brand, which is what I think people really want. He even offered to do this given adequate interest. But he will limit the response to the things that should result in a more accurate picture. I and many others really dislike the motion smoothing settings, finding that they just end up looking weird. These are called different things on different sets, and setting these for the various modes of the TV can be tricky. These are the things that could be customized for each brand, making it clearer and quicker for his viewers to set their TV up.
the internet has been dumbed down for the masses to bring it to everybody, when it was originally filled with people who had to figure things out in SOME fashion along the way. now these new plebs take being spoon fed exactly what they want or nothing at all.
@@Sas-wk9lj to be fair, i did hear him say this and i flat out disagree since i've seen evidence to the contrary. he claims that all tv's need to be calibrated, which to be fair has use cases if a display has changed performance over time or whatnot, but i think within the margin of quality control of the displays tested are certainly within a good enough range to be preferred even over basic "Warm" colour presets. i have followed settings for my monitor and TV from someone who has already done calibration, and it is very clearly much better result than Movie mode and Warm 50 / warm 1 or 2. on my computer monitor, Warm was still very clearly too blue before following someone's settings which is within the margin of pinpoint accuracy to my eye. on my TV it seemed like i needed something between Warm 1 and 2, as 1 wasn't red enough and 2 seemed too red. this is also one major reason why "Warm", while i think is still a good baseline recommendation based on the usually true assumption that most displays are too blue, i personally feel is still not as accurate as someone could get following calibrated settings based around a measurement of consistent product quality rather than an assumption. if you actually think about it, warm 50, or warm 1 and 2 are incredibly vague ranges of "increased red colours" with no specific indication of exactly how much it's being changed and how much extra warmth it needs, instead only working on the assumption that "most displays are too blue by default", which to be fair is true, but is only a very rough guide for colour/white balance accuracy. i think that the rough Warm setting makes your display less accurate than if you did in fact follow someone's calibrated settings on a tv that's only sliightly different than yours based on quality control. i do think Warm is more accurate than Standard on almost all displays, but in my experience, even someone elses properly calibrated settings is very clearly even more accurate than a generic "Warm" filter... with all this said, i don't blame him for not posting calibration results as i wouldn't want the responsibility of potentially having tested a very off quality display. i do think that someone that tests maybe a few though and gets fairly similar results should just post one of them. he does actually say at 16:44 that he's not adjusting for accuracy, but rather "going for something you like". this to me is a statement avoiding responsibility because it is well known that Warm does indeed bring white balance to a more accurate level for most TV's which are too blue, however "more accurate" obviously isn't a goal of complete accuracy which is probably why he never claimed to be aiming for accuracy even if that's what he's doing.
Thank you for the thorough picture setting rundown. This will save a lot of people a lot of grief & may prevent them from returning a perfectly good TV that just needed to have eco mode turned off.

Amazing video. Thank you! Never heard of Tablo before and loved the calibration explanation. Each panel is different even for the same model, and your environment can affect it. This is why the diff between daytime and dark room isn’t just brightness. Thank you for explaining and providing useful settings and explanations.
the burn in was from gaming, i think. the center being discolored due to a constant green/ red background (think grassy fields or blood soaked halls) the top right looks like a minimap or mission box, and box below it for teammates or squad info. the bottom center looks like the area a gun would bob from playing for hours on end, or where your MMO avatar would stand, blocking the usually green/ red background. Hell, might even be a driving game? the 'S' in the top right looks "driver sim" like, and the map on th top corner, steering wheel in the bottom center moving back and forth.
My LG OLED 65 E7 is doing the same thing. this due to the age of the TV (2017). The problem is an issue with the red pixels where it makes yellow look green..
To be honest I do think what we are seeing is burn-in. It's just caused by a TON of varied content. Burn-in is simply the affected pixels having been used more than the rest. First of all, I can see multiple shapes. In the top right corner(ish) is an S. Then there is a red square at the right about half height. Especially at the bottom there seem to be a couple of squares... if you look closely, you can see a grid. It seems to be the layout of the smart TV? Then in the center, what colors are used up, so that the yellow-green turns green with a blueish hint? Yup, red. What has a higher amount of red compared to green or blue? Yup, skin. Now, what programming tends to have faces mostly sitting in the center? News. I think the family had the TV set to the news for a long time (or talking heads TH-camrs? I mean, just look at the framing of You Asked... he could almost have killed his TV by watching too much of you, Caleb). Also, keep in mind that the settings weren't changed from default. So it was in dynamic mode all the time, which gives additional juice to colors as well as brightness. So unlike TVs that are in filmmaker, this one was pushed hard. A lot. With relatively varied content (hence no logos (or perhaps the logo "dejuicer" did a good job)).
I do agree with some of your info but I do think this is due to quality issues from the panel which shows after a couple of years. My twinbrother have the same problem (b6, plays a lot but varied) and my friend (b7, plays only a little and watched varied content). I might even starting to see some problems with my father in laws TV (b7, varied content, no gaming). Somehow the pixel "wears out" so skintones gets a greenish look and they "wear out" faster then they should... Maiby because of more heat in the center? And like you said: faces are normally in the middle of the screen. This is probably hard to avoid and has, like I wrote, something to do with the quality of the panel. "Avoid static images" "varied content" is in this case only "buzzwords" so we as a consumer feels that we are in control when we actually aren't...
Thanks for the burn-in replay and analysis. The "corrective" video does not appear to have any effect on the problem. Here are a couple of additional data points: 1- the burn-in (for lack of a better description) did start after we move from CA to Chicago but it started small and bloomed to blob we see today. The TV was packed in its original box which showed no sign of damage. 2- Using an infrared thermometer I measured various spots on the screen. Using a 3 x 3 grid the top row (A1-A3) was the coolest at just over 100 degrees. B1 and B3 were a little warmer at 105 degrees. C1 and C3 were about 109 degrees. B2 was 119 degrees and C2 was 125 degrees. These are not outrageous temperatures but I wonder if the electronics package could be cooking the screen? Thanks.
Thx for the update... I posted today that I have the identical problem on my 55" OLED B9 puchased Dec '19... Kinda weird the photo in the video looks like it was a pic of my screen!! Like you mentioned in this update, mine also started out small and grew to about the same size as your "blob"... I think you may be onto something with the temp readings... I never watched just news or talking heads, there was a good mix of movies and evening primetime dramas, etc... as well... Being retired though, the TV got many more hours on it than what is probably normal as I am home most days and have the TV going all the time in the background... As I mentioned in my post today, it has been moved to the bedroom and a 55" G3 has taken it's place... I won't be leaving the new one on as much, but nearly 5 years out of a TV isn't terrible, I've had worse from other brands over the years... Had a top of the line (1984) Sony 27" NTSC/PAL CRT TV that lasted 20 years before crapping out... You just never know!! Please keep me posted if you figure out anything on the "blob" and I will do the same... Thx, JB
That was very informative after 3 years of messing around with my2021 Sony OLED Bravia a80 j I turned everything off in cinema mode and boosted up the color to medium after many nights fiddling around thinking having something on auto or manual is the best way while I was doing more motion flow adjusting or adjusting this or that that than actually watching let's say "Prometheus".. now in one swoop everything is as clear as sharp as it's going to be.

Great video. Recently bought LG G4 and other videos I watched recommended Cinema as well. I have been using cinema but a little botherd by the yellow tint guess you call that warm temperature. After watching this video I dropped to W30 and I am so much more pleased. Thanks again..
I sold TVs for a couple of years on the weekends at Best Buy for one of the major brands. The story this guy tells about Costco's Allstate warranty is very familiar. It is free with the TV purchases at Costco, but you end up getting your money's worth. I dealt with several customers who had their TVs die right before the Allstate insurance would run out and then couldn't get a replacement. I never saw that issue with the Best Buy "protection plan." I even saw customers get TVs replaced that were a couple of weeks outside of the warranty. It's almost impossible to find a calibrator that will come out for a consumer friendly price anymore. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but rarely is calibration going to be worth it for the average person.
2:00 interesting. My LG C7 (2017) has a very similar smudging and the a hard skewing towards Green (center screen yellows look green). TV watched mostly streaming and movies from bluray/4k source. Also past its 10,000hrs. Haven't found a way to get rid of this. Also, lots of lower-bar burn is slightly visible; mostly from stream services (i could guess)
Regarding Color temp: I’ve told people that if they get used to cooler settings, changing it to the accurate warmer mode doesn’t look good immediately, as it looks like you’re adding a yellow tint to the image. But when your eyes adjust after a bit, you can see how the previous setting looked too blue.
i always tell clients to live with it for 48 hours before swapping back when i set up a new TV, and set it o cinema with motion smoothing off and eco off
This is why for a long time I hated TV content creators. They had your flawed mindset that warm color temp is always better. *it's not* No amount of waiting will change how some people eyes are.
This is not always true, for example some LG TVs measure warmer than D65 at Warm 50, therefore Warm 50 would actually be too warm and not some magic number to set it to. You also have the influence of the ambient light around the human eyes that are perceiving the screen. How come nobody talks about calibrating it to these as well? BOTH of these factors favor colder white, unless you are a teenage in a pitch black room.
Caleb and crew - big fan here. Love the content. Will add a bit abt Tablo. Our fam has one… nice product but has limitations. ATSC 1.0 (not 3.0). Works on devices on same WiFi network - not when outside of home. Tablo app doesn’t work on LG nor AppleTV streaming boxes. It also has waaaaaay too many updates and we often reset. All stuff well noted on Tablo website and service team is nice. Thx again for great show!
For the C8 that is full screen burn in. This is typical wear burn in from usage. My B7 has the same issue. The center screen gets the most usage so you'll get discoloration there. It's not as distracting as a image burned in. But its the same process.

WOW!! The screen shots of the first OLED TV you showed looked like someone snuck into my house and took pictures of my TV!! I have an LG 55" OLED B9 purchased in Dec 19... All was good until about 6 mos ago and I noticed a green bloom in several spots around the middle of the screen... The reason I call them blooms is they have bloomed into spots nearly identical to the ones shown in the vid... After almost 5 yrs, I do have a bit of horizonal burn in along the bottom which I realize is a completely seperate problem... Yesterday, that TV was relegated to the bedroom and a LG 55" OLED G3 took it's place. I also wondered what I had done to cause the blooming... I can definitely rule out any trauma to the screen as it was unpacked, placed on a stand and never moved for the entire time I have had it...
I bought a Sony A80K when you were reviewing and absoluty love it. Havent changed any settings and am completely content with the picture quality out of the box.

I have been using tablo and upgraded to the new version. I have an antenna that picks up 4 channels and 50 or so tablo fast streaming channels that I can record. Great product at a reasonable price. Free programming also.
I have an LG C8 in the UK and I had this issue. Contacted LG and they sent someone out to take it apart and put in a new screen. No issues since. It was about 5 years old when it happened.
My LG OLED developed a large cool bloom in the centre of the screen. LG weren’t happy about it but they did replace the screen under warranty. The replacement screen has not had any issues over the last two years.
Great settings tip. Would be awesome if you also covered Game mode setting suggestions. Especially interested in getting the best out of game mode on the G4 but general LG OLED much appreciated!
We're gearing up for football season! Already have a Samsung S95B though so we're not looking to upgrade. It looks say WAY better now than it did before we went OLED

What content did you use the TV for? My guess would be talking heads... TH-cam, news, ...?

Had a top of the line (1984) Sony 27" NTSC/PAL CRT TV that lasted 20 years before crapping out... You just never know!! That was very informative after 3 years of messing around with my2021 Sony OLED Bravia a80 j I turned everything off in cinema mode and boosted up the color to medium after many nights fiddling around thinking having something on auto or manual is the best way while I was doing more motion flow adjusting or adjusting this or that that than actually watching let's say "Prometheus".. now in one swoop everything is as clear as sharp as it's going to be.
Loved the settings part-would love to have it done on a Sony tv!
I've seen how to set the settings in other videos along the way, but having them all in one video for easy reference would be great!

Great video. Recently bought LG G4 and other videos I watched recommended Cinema as well. I have been using cinema but a little botherd by the yellow tint guess you call that warm temperature. After watching this video I dropped to W30 and I am so much more pleased. Thanks again..
I sold TVs for a couple of years on the weekends at Best Buy for one of the major brands. The story this guy tells about Costco's Allstate warranty is very familiar. It is free with the TV purchases at Costco, but you end up getting your money's worth. I dealt with several customers who had their TVs die right before the Allstate insurance would run out and then couldn't get a replacement. I never saw that issue with the Best Buy "protection plan." I even saw customers get TVs replaced that were a couple of weeks outside of the warranty.
It's almost impossible to find a calibrator that will come out for a consumer friendly price anymore. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but rarely is calibration going to be worth it for the average person.

I ran a pixel cleaner from youtube on my LCD tv's and it worked great. Both tv's are ten + years old and the difference is awesome.

2:00 interesting. My LG C7 (2017) has a very similar smudging and the a hard skewing towards Green (center screen yellows look green). TV watched mostly streaming and movies from bluray/4k source. Also past its 10,000hrs. Haven't found a way to get rid of this. Also, lots of lower-bar burn is slightly visible; mostly from stream services (i could guess)
Same problem here LG OLED 55B7P…never has been hitting or watched steady content…
Regarding Color temp: I’ve told people that if they get used to cooler settings, changing it to the accurate warmer mode doesn’t look good immediately, as it looks like you’re adding a yellow tint to the image. But when your eyes adjust after a bit, you can see how the previous setting looked too blue.
i always tell clients to live with it for 48 hours before swapping back when i set up a new TV, and set it o cinema with motion smoothing off and eco off
This is why for a long time I hated TV content creators. They had your flawed mindset that warm color temp is always better. *it's not* No amount of waiting will change how some people eyes are.

This is not always true, for example some LG TVs measure warmer than D65 at Warm 50, therefore Warm 50 would actually be too warm and not some magic number to set it to. You also have the influence of the ambient light around the human eyes that are perceiving the screen. How come nobody talks about calibrating it to these as well? BOTH of these factors favor colder white, unless you are a teenage in a pitch black room.
Caleb and crew - big fan here. Love the content. Will add a bit abt Tablo. Our fam has one… nice product but has limitations. ATSC 1.0 (not 3.0). Works on devices on same WiFi network - not when outside of home. Tablo app doesn’t work on LG nor AppleTV streaming boxes. It also has waaaaaay too many updates and we often reset. All stuff well noted on Tablo website and service team is nice. Thx again for great show!

For the C8 that is full screen burn in. This is typical wear burn in from usage. My B7 has the same issue. The center screen gets the most usage so you'll get discoloration there. It's not as distracting as a image burned in. But its the same process.

WOW!! The screen shots of the first OLED TV you showed looked like someone snuck into my house and took pictures of my TV!! I have an LG 55" OLED B9 purchased in Dec 19... All was good until about 6 mos ago and I noticed a green bloom in several spots around the middle of the screen... The reason I call them blooms is they have bloomed into spots nearly identical to the ones shown in the vid... After almost 5 yrs, I do have a bit of horizonal burn in along the bottom which I realize is a completely seperate problem... Yesterday, that TV was relegated to the bedroom and a LG 55" OLED G3 took it's place. I also wondered what I had done to cause the blooming... I can definitely rule out any trauma to the screen as it was unpacked, placed on a stand and never moved for the entire time I have had it...

I bought a Sony A80K when you were reviewing and absoluty love it. Havent changed any settings and am completely content with the picture quality out of the box.
We got a burn in like that once. The bottom lines were closed captioning and the center was a news anchor

I have been using tablo and upgraded to the new version. I have an antenna that picks up 4 channels and 50 or so tablo fast streaming channels that I can record. Great product at a reasonable price. Free programming also.

I have an LG C8 in the UK and I had this issue. Contacted LG and they sent someone out to take it apart and put in a new screen. No issues since. It was about 5 years old when it happened.
My LG OLED developed a large cool bloom in the centre of the screen. LG weren’t happy about it but they did replace the screen under warranty. The replacement screen has not had any issues over the last two years.
I also want te calibration settings for the TCL QM85 😅 I bought it because you recomend it and u r the Goat of TVs
That burn in blob is from watching fireplace or camp fire ambiance for hours. Same thing happened to me.
Makes me hope even more my Kuro keeps on living 😂
Set it to Pure mode day 1 & haven't touched a setting since. A new TV would drive me nuts.
