I got the Chargemap pass and added the Ionity subscription. This got me cheap charging on the payage and lots of small destination chargers. The infrastructure in France is truly amazing.
I’ve done 5 return trips from London to southern Spain in the iPace since 2021. Every trip has been a joy. It’s been really noticeable how charging infrastructure in France and Spain is expanding rapidly.
My best tips:
1. Half of all Tesla supercharger in France are open to all vehicles and the cheapest option.
2. For most others, Octopus Electroverse’s RFID card works well and gives good rates.
3. After Tesla, cheapest motorway service option is Engie/Last Mile Solutions @ 32p/kwh with the Octopus Card.
Total Energies, Ionity, Allego make up the bulk of the rest.
4. Thoroughly recommend getting a toll tag for France so you can just use the automated lanes in stead or queuing to pay cash or card.
Road tripping in France and Spain with any EV is a joy. Do it!
Hey, great report, Greg, thanks for your info, and glad you enjoy your car, Dave
Drove to the Loire Valley last year. Plenty of chargers en route. Most took the Octopus Electroverse card and or the Chargemap card
Also worth mentioning you need to apply the French Crit’Aire sticker to drive in some major cities.
It only costs circa €5.00
Thank you very much!
There are also other ferry options.
If it looks like the Dover/ Folkstone options are busy, should you be in the south, travelling south, there's Newhaven Dieppe, or from the east of the country, or heading for northern Europe, Harwich could be a less congested point of departure. Either of these could not only be cheaper, but also save a few miles on the continent.
Ionity is great in France. Went from Manchester to the south of France and back in my Ioniq5. The french side was far easier with way more capacity.
Nice to hear, Dave, did they offer contactless, Dave
@@davetakesiton I honestly cant remember i just used my Hyundai charge card. Yes there is a small admin fee for using the charge card but at least i know it will work where ever i am. Part of the reason they were better in France was because they are better located at the motorway services rather than off the motorway and were less busy than uk ionity. I guess theres more space in France while room for charges is alot less in the uk.
@@davetakesiton No, Ionity in France and Spain same as UK, only RFID or the Ionity app and Bonnet. Bonnet seems to be the cheapest by about 1p over Electroverse with it’s discount for Octopus customers.
When I rented an EV in Norway, Tesla superchargers saved the day. Two companies: Circle K and Eviny required a Norwegian telephone number to activate an account on their app. I was almost stuck on account of that, unable to drive to the next charger. But eventually they agreed to give me a few minutes of free charge so I could limp along. Suffice to say it was a stressfully bad experience.
Timely video, thanks - I'm off around Europe on Monday 🙂
Have a great trip, Dave
Top tip where a destination charger is offered: always check first unless it clearly states what it is. I’ve been looking at rental properties recently that offered destination chargers. Out of 5 when I checked, only one had a 7kW charger, of the others one had an outdoor socket and 3 referred me to a local public car park with one 7kW charger!
Great advice, Dave
Already planned, trip down to Switzerland via tunnel.
As a Tesla owner getting to a Supercharger that says that it has one bay empty only to find two VWs taking up two chargers each as the charging ports are on the wrong side for their car frustrating. Pick Tesla superchargers that don't allow other brands to use them. Unless they are showing over half the charging bays, are empty.
Yes, this can be annoying but use your route planner even if you know the way and always charge there. I find it sometimes redirects me to a different charger which is quieter. I can honestly say that I have not queued at a supercharger at all, not once, this year, Came close a few times but never queued and I film or photograph all my sessions. Mind you, just got back from Cheltenham and the superchargers seem to have avoided there by a very wide margin. Here I have 10 within 30 miles. Annoying because being so close I never use them.
Just back from a 3 day trip to euro Disney via the ferry. Disney Hotel had free 11kW! charging.
I also fast charged on the autoroute. Speed was super fast and the cost was 1/3 of the uk prices. I used the Elli card.
Great to hear, Dave
The EV chargers at Folkestone have been replaced with a big hole in the ground for many months now. Before that, it was one solitary charger. No indication of when the situation will improve.
We live in hope
I never knew about the tesla chargers you could use on non tesla vehicles using there app and membership. Thats definatly the way if traveling in france etc.
Chargemap have just negotiated a deal that allows payment at Tesla superchargers with a chargemap card.
Manyi campsite hookups have a 10 or even six amp limit if your adaptor or car cannot limit their consumption to match these you will not be able to charge an a camp site. Given that, I have just been to Spain and back , 2,000 miles, on my Energica electric motorbike with no problems.
Don't know about others but mine is selectable down to 5 amps, Dave
@@davetakesiton none of the granny leads supplied with vehicles that I have seen have any controls, a lot of the aftermarket ones do. I don't know if current evs have charge rate controls.
@@waerlogauk Hyundai OEM granny charger is selectable to 3 different charge rates.
Sunderland to Boppard Germany in 9 days time with an MG4 first EV Fastned (no home charging) is my local so have a sub with them see how it goes fingers crossed. I have Elli and Electroverse Cards Tesla app and Fastned, think I'm well armed LOL
Best of luck
MG owners please note that MGs do not work on Tesla chargers. Hopefully this will change in future.
25 pence per kWh, not mile. At 4 min 01 sec. Old habits 😂
Just shows again how ripped of we are in Britain
Just remember for every ounce of the rare earth metals that were used to make the ev car several lives were lost so lets thank those poor lives that were lost to help you drive and charge your rare earth metal car.
And just remember every mile you drive spewing out poisonous toxic carcinogenic fumes kills several people prematurely, Dave
@@davetakesiton Question do ev cars filter plantation. And where do the materials come from to make such ev cars
Just drove from South Wales to Murcia Spain via Plymouth - Santander in my Tesla Model Y SR using Superchargers, cost £65 for 726 miles👍🛳🐕🦺🌴
Thanks for this text bro, I have an ID4 and I’m willing to travel to Morocco with it via Spain Santander? Could you please tell me exactly how much is the cost of the ferry also to arrive to murcia? Thanks
