I agree with you on most of what you’ve said on this tool. However, the wire capabilities can help prevent that survival situation. I used to have a Signal and I was out riding my dual sport. Some wiring broke on me which caused the bike to shut down. It took a while to get everything bandaged up and I did end up spending the night and finishing the job in the morning but the Signal having wire cutters and crimpers kept me from having to push my bike out of the woods (god knows how long that would have taken) so I will say that I like the choice of plier head for this tool
By far my favorite leatherman, and favorite multitool. I never leave the house without both the signal, bit kit+bit extension. It’s served me extremely well these past 2 years. Love this multitool!!

Thank you for your feed back on the Signal….I had been interested a little bit in this, because of the light weight EDC, the awl and the fire striker….and to be honest the colors availability…. Thing is, I carry the Wave + for years and still do….it is my EDC, I wear it leather holster I made on my belt, rarely is not strapped to me…unless its going out to a fancy function or if I am jogging….I like the Ideal of having something a little lighter and not bulky….hence the clip was a +. That being said, living in Montana…working on ranches and in the lumber/Hardware store in town, riding checking stock, hunting, camping and etc…the Wave +, has done every thing I have needed it for. Your comment in regards to feeling that bit heft of the Wave+…is reassuring. For me….the single most valuable change for me doing ranch work….in which Leatherman could improve the Wave….would be a GOOD awl….use that tool as much as I do the both knives on the Wave+. If Leatherman could ditch the eyeglass screwdriver and replace it with a nice useable awl….the Wave + would damn near perfect for me! I understand this video is a couple of years old….but incase you read this….thank you for your input!!! from Montana….have a great week!
I love mine, but really miss a pair of scissors. Got a Victorinox SwissCard and carry it in the signal big nylon sheath along with a mini flashlight and a proper magnesium flint from SOL. It all fits great!
Great review and you have some interesting points on the Signal. In 2021, the Leatherman Signal is still in the lineup on the website. It's one of the best sellers AND considering all that you said, it's the ONLY tool (In the Leatherman lineup) that can help start a fire. Consider that when you are stranded in the wilderness and you have your Rebar in the pocket!
Its such a rabbit hole though, isn't it? See I would tend to agree that the Signal checks a lot of boxes on the list and if I was stranded in the wilderness with *one thing in my pocket* then an MT with an onboard ferro rod would pretty much be the thing I would want. Bonus points for the onboard sharpener. That being said, I would have to ask what the hell am I doing in the wilderness with "only one thing in my pocket"? I like to imagine that anyone going anywhere near the wilderness should have, in the very least, a multitool *and* a bic lighter. These are at a bare minimum. You probably also want to have a diamond rod and a steel water bottle if you're going so far into the wilderness you could get stranded there. So having those extra items beside the MT, I would absolutely prefer to have a Rebar because it allows for a few things that the Signal is coming up short on -- like a file and a chunky flat head. Not to mention the huge advantage of having two separate blades, one of them being full fine edge. General logic might suggest that the more tools you have to manipulate the environment you're in, the more plentiful your options for survival-related things. Especially when you factor in the chances of running into things like old metal refuse, wire fencing from days long past, etc. But that is, of course, assuming you have firecraft covered without relying on your MT having a tiny ferro rod in the handle. So maybe we can challenge the adage that "failing to plan is planning to fail" with the caveat "unless you have a LM Signal on you" but that quickly extends to the idea that everyone should always carry a leatherman signal *just in case*; because nobody plans to get stranded, it just happens. However, your risk of getting stranded drastically increases when you go to the woods so at those times it's probably safe to say you should be throwing a fire kit in your pocket and then you can carry whatever multitool you think will affect all the other aspects of survivability beyond simple fire-starting. And weighing that out would, in my estimation, naturally lead to much more capable tools like the Rebar, Wave, Supertool, Surge, Swisstool(s).
I mean if you're stranded in the wilderness with *just* a Rebar, you are either extremely unlucky or extremely foolish. Most people would at least also have a Bic lighter and if you're in the wilderness long enough to need a sharpener and you didn't bring one already? Well you're probably ill-prepared in a way the Signal isn't going to offset.
The point is that the signal can do a bad job at all the needed things. And in a survival situation you will be happy to have something that does a bad job than having nothing. And while you aren’t using it most of the time, you are happy that it doesn’t weigh much, basically making it not noticeable, so that you can enjoy your trip, hike whatever… and if shit hits the fan, this will get you out of a jam in a pinch. And that’s why it is my EDC of choice.
The half serrated blade was my biggest hangup with this knife. I absolutely detested the factory blade! The solution was to make a custom blade for the Signal. I have a video on my channel showing the blade and the process.
Video idea/request: demonstrate how to make a whistle out of banding material, like you mention in this review. Thanks for all the great videos. Keep them coming, and I’ll keep watching!
I certainly will, I actually thought about doing it the other day. The problem is, I don't have any banding material right now. Whenever we are on the job next, I will be sure to set some aside to do just that.
I think people misunderstand the intention of the Signal. It's not meant to be a primary survival tool, but a back up set of tools for redundancy. Generally people who are prepared to use these tools will already be carrying a fixed blade knife, a folding saw, a ferro rod, and a whistle. As bushman, I personally would swap out the awl for a cord/strap cutter, or swap the combo blade for a serrated blade for the purposes of cutting cord. I'd also swap out the can opener and 2d bit driver for a 3d bit driver and add a glass breaker for vehicle egress.
I choose to carry a Leatherman Rebar with me when I'm camping, it makes the most amount of sense to me. It's a little bit lighter than what is usually on my belt, I don't really mind added weight but being able to dial it down a little bit is nice.
Excellent review; logical, thorough & your recommendation of an appropriate alternative/s, remains within the Leatherman product line (hence; unbiased). Considering the Lenox wood cutting blades you've discussed (& demonstrated) in one of your videos (which fit the Leatherman Surge) - my preferred survival tool is the Leatherman Surge; no hesitation

Thanks for oyur honesty. I bought the Signal, I do not like the blade for the exact reasons you pointed out. After owning the Signal, I came to think of it as the Boy Scout of the multitool lineup. Functional and handy but doesn't go far enough.

Hey I am just seeing your videos and I totaling enjoy them. I only watched 3 videos so far. In your personal opinion which is the the best Leatherman for camping instead of the signal would you recommend that has a straight blade knives & window breaker & most importantly can & will cut a 5 ought hooks as I fish alot that is much needed in my life. It would be great if had a window smashed as well. Thank you for your honest feed back.
I own this tool and use it for restaurant work. I'm a bartender/manager. It does a great job. But, I would rather own a Curl with the hammer/bottle opener. I don't need the saw and would rather have the file. I also don't mind the combination blade because the curated blade works great for cutting cardboard. I absolutely love the removable diamond coated file/knife sharpener. Being able to sharpening your blade is a great thing.
Just got this MT and im replacing the sharpener and whistle etc with bit holders so ill have 3 bits, like a super skeletool. I like it so far. Def not for survival tho. Great EDC option.
Hi mate been watching your channel so much trying to pick a multi tool to replace my Leatherman Rebar. I pretty much want all the same tools but i like the outside tool functions on newer leathermans. Is there any you can suggest to take a look at? I like the Wave plus but im not sure if its worth the extra cash for pretty much a pair of scissors and bit driver? I do carry a Micra on my keys as it was a free gift years ago when i bought the Rebar so between the 2 i kinda have everything i need! I just like shiny new stuff!!
The only thing that I don’t like about the Wave+ is the lack of an awl. However, if you already have a Rebar, you’re in luck. Swapping out the awl out of the Rebar in favor of the Wave+ micro driver is a very common and easy modification. Unless of course you need the micro driver. That would be my recommendation.
..so if u cud choose only 1 thing to pick for a survival situation.. it would be 1: the rebar 2: a ferrum rod 3: an onlinecorse to make a wisstle/ a dedicated wissle 4: a good hammer..?
Is it good time now for Leatherman to launch the version 2 of their Outdoor multitool? Tons of great reasons to develop from this successful seller. 👀 Would be super exciting for the market now.
I dig the signal. The sharpener should have been a micro file similar to the file found on the Wave+ IMO. Then we’d get a durable diamond coated knife sharpener plus a file. The whistle/ferro would have been better suited as a magnesium block with a beefier ferrorod. But other than I always pack it when going out in the woods and tethered to my belt via 550 when fishing. All in all I think it’s a great tool for outdoor use. I treat it as a tool that has several backup items that will likely never get used (aka sharpener/ferro).
As a survival tool this should be lighter and more focused: 1. straight blade 2. Serrated blade 3. Saw 4. Can opener 5. Awl, bottle opener and Phillips and Stanley drivers up one end in closed position 6. No pliers 7. Full length of tool ferro rod 4" Basically a Swiss army knife?
A thought occurs: perhaps the rod is best struck with the wire stripper given that its rounded and profiled the way it is? Not sure, but that's my first thought on the matter

I form my opinions based on my own experiences, but I always try to explain my reasoning behind my opinions as well. People use different tools in different ways and have a wide variety of needs. I think they make this as a urban SHTF scenario survival tool, that doubles as a camping tool. Nowadays most people do glamping not traditional camping, or bushcraft. So I could see the use of the bit driver for all of the comfort items people bring now. Good review. You make some good points about the additions that could be made, and the limitations of the awl. I agree about the combination blade.
Just to add as a non glamper, ha ha. I upgraded to this because I had a small crummy multi-tool from Mountain Warehouse (Don't judge me, I bought it as a total newbie dayhiker), but the amount of times I needed the pliers on it and the little screwdriver for fixing hiking gear has been insane. I've pulled sticks and rocks out of microspikes, fixed broken links on spikes, fixed loose screws on hiking poles, fixed snowshoes etc. That screwdriver feature has served me well as a hiker and backpacker. I can see why it's less great for bushcrafters, but it's definitely been a great feature for me.
I really like your reviews. I was about to buy this tool and step back. I don’t like the combo blade, I would have liked a normal long blade and a small serrated blade.
I edc a signal. The form factor is great and all the tools except the fire starter/whistle are useful to me on a daily basis. I agree with you about the knife blade, there’s no good reason for the signal to have a partly serrated blade, and I would prefer if the saw was replaced with a T-shank adapter. Otherwise, the tool is almost perfect. The use case is more as a multitool that you can use in the woods than as a multitool meant to be used in the woods, if that makes sense. If I’m going into the brush for a week, I might prefer a surge or a MUT instead (I don’t own either, but I’m judging off of toolsets) but the signal wouldn’t be detrimental. However, if I’m going on a short hike that goes longer than I expected, then that’s when the signal’s toolset makes sense
I was working in south Texas and we were in extremely thick vegetation carrying things in and out of a place that you could very easily become lost. I actually did become lost and my team had to come search for me. I sat down in one place and tried not to cry. I was scared. Luckily I had my Signal and it helped me breath a little easier knowing that I had a fire tool. I had a secondary whistle which saved me but it was really nice to have a fire tool to keep me from having another panic attack
Ok it was good for mindset. But are you even able to start a real fire with a (small) ferrorod in that situation ? Lot of people are buying ferrorod only because it's cool, and never train themself. The problem is that they don't realize that start a fire with this tool in a stressful situation is way more difficult than its appears (especially on pro bushcrafters youtube channels...). And the day they really need it, they don't know how it work.

I don’t know that I’m an expert. In any case, each individual is an expert about what fits their needs the best. All I try to do is steer people in the right direction.
@@txtoolcrib so I use it as an EDC while at my ranch. As you said, a lot of the survival tools are back up tools but when you are out working in canyons, it's hard to carry individual tools that this leatherman has. I use all off the working tools like bit drivers and wire cutters/crimper. The signal just gives me some piece of mind that if something happens, my multi tool alone can get me through the night
I've been carrying my Skeletool CX for a while now on top of many other pocket goodies but wanted to condense down. This was what I was looking for. Not too crazy about the blade but then again I never use a knife because of a pocket utility blade. The gimmicky fire starter and sharpener are being replaced with bit holding inserts from Eric Au and I think I'm going to try and mod it with some sort of scalpel holder rather than the saw that I'll never use in EDC. A lot of work for an MT but in my opinion, a perfect MT doesn't exist.
You say that the 1/4 driver is just to add functionality on paper, but that 1/4 inch driver was my only tool mated to a hex screw driver to squeeze in between the the windscreen and dashboard to get the dashboard screws out on my 40 year old Land Rover!
My workaround for its shortcomings was to just carry it alongside the Gerber centerdrive. That way I have tools for mechanical applications and outdoors. Centerdrive is useless for wire cutting mostly and signal is not so good a handling screws. But signal is compact enough to be a great edc but centerdrive feels like a toolbox
I’ve always wished that Leatherman would make a dedicated screwdriver with a pocket clip. One that would fold and be able to hold about three additional bits on board. Maybe the size of a single Wave handle. What do you find the most useful on the CenterDrive?
@@txtoolcrib it's got to be either the awl or prybar. The prybar is great at grabbing and popping clips out of vehicle panels and the little wire ties that attach wires to brackets.
Samuel Lacavera I do like that little awl. It’s quite sharp. I’m kind of on the fence regarding the pry bar though. Sounds like it works for you though.
I still think that a multi tool should be as generalized as possible. A MT for this, a MT for that... if I‘m able to foresee what’s gonna happen, I can bring specialized tools- which are always superior. I do like some ideas on this, like the pommel with the hex driver, the removable file, too. But almost everything else is mediocre at best. My favorite MT is still the Victorinox Spirit S. And then combine it with some...
I love the signal. I don’t think of it as a survival tool though. I removed the whistle and file so it is all metal and edc it like a beefed up skeletool.
I like it and think of it as a "bigger Skeletool" too. TH-cam reviewers can't get past the marketing material and it probably blows their mind that someone would use this as an EDC tool.

Ben the combo Serrated/Straight edge Blade is a better all around Emergency blade for cutting Synthetic especially wet and under tension with a cleaner cut than a full Serrated, a full serrated will ruin the end of your line that you cut even if you tape the end, but a Combo blade (especially wet line under tension, the serrated will start the cut by breaking strands and the straight edge will use that momentum of cut and make a cleaner better cut, thats why The knives for this environment are designed that way, wet, tension must reuse the line,
Pummel means to strike. It’s a verb snd an action. Pommel, on the other hand, is the very end of a knife handle. It’s a noun because it’s an object and a thing.
No MT is a "survival tool" anyway. For example if I had to take one tool it would be a strong full tang knife. Even though I usually take only the lightest folder available on hikes, I do on occasion take at least the F1 if there is a realistic chance to get stranded. Which means that I would always have at least a folder (including EDC) in every situation I'd have a MT. So it's blade is at best a second or even third backup (I would probably not carry a MT at all on a hike, never had, it is just theoretical). Same for every other tool on it. Don't actually need a knife at all. If built on personal design I might even completely ditch it, or better put a fully serrated one only. The advantages I see in this tool are multiple carry options and modularity, as the whistle/rod and sharpener can be exchanged with 3d printed alternatives used as bit holders, which is more useful around town. The ability to use standard hex bits with more leverage in that position is also interesting. I would say a knife+modded signal+micra+hex-bit-set-with-extender combo would cover most casual uses that do not require a full toolbox and it all fits in a small cellphone-sized pouch. Survival seems gimmicky to me as a field itself, don't realy care and such tools are more often than not just unnecessary weight. Than again Europe has little extended wilderness and good orientation skills are more often than not all the survival skill one needs in the wild. Alaska might of course be very different. So interesting as a modular tool, not realy for survival.
This is how it should be used. So many people saying "The ferro rod isn't great, carry a proper one", but you can say that about any tool on a multi tool. You absolutely should have a better/more reliable fire starting method or two. They will never replace purpose built tools. When I go out, I have a proper ferro rod, along with a couple other fire starting methods, but the fact that this rod is integrated into the tool means they won't get separated.

You said you wouldn't trust your life with the Signal. Would you trust the Rebar then? Is it as robust as people tell? I like the carabiner on the Signal for dangling on my pants. Greetings from Germany.
You missed one tool, at least I think you did. The tip of the pommel tool also serves as a tool that will grab the bolt of a rifle in order to clear rifle jams. I would prefer a replacement straight edge blade instead of a combo serrated blade. My biggest negative is that there are too many plastic bits sticking out and in my experience, nothing made from plastic will survive long in the African bush.

Although less common than 1/4" bits, 3/16" are getting momentum, especially on smaller size screwdrivers. The Picquic Multique screwdriver is a good example of. By the way, I'd like to see your take on any of the Picquic. Made in Canada, I've been using them since the 90'. I carry both Original (with a Robertson #2 ready) and Multique (with a Philips #2 ready) on any jobsite that I show up. Keep up your excellent work!
@@txtoolcrib I've count yesterday the number of Picquic screwdrivers that I have in various toolboxes and kits. It's scary. I own 23 of them, including the very first one that I bought 28 years ago. Overall, I only had one broken bit (a flat one, doing something that I shouldn't had to do...) and one handle that cracked (but not shattered) from a 40' fall. As mentioned in my earlier comment, I carry two Picquic on my toolbelt. My main screwdriver is a regular one with 1/4" bits that I also use in my impact driver. This one is always set up with a Robertson #2. The other one is a Multique with 3/16" bits, st with a Philips #2. I do carry two different one only because they are the screws that I deal the most with. They are easy to recognize as their handle are different, making it far easier to reach into my pouch with looking at it.
There is no other SINGLE tool that can make you a fire or send smoke & sound signals. Yes i also know that stuffing an Axe in my trousers a fishing rod, fire steel, koocking gear etc makes way more sense...but you end up with a bulge in your trousers right? So as a single tool that can make fire and can help you make fish traps etc i would go for this SINGLE tool. There is just no other like it exept for stuffed bug out bags with multiple tools.
I’m not a survivalist. I live in a city. I usually carry a spyderco shaman, but I find myself needing more than a blade. But I’m not about to carry my surge, no need for the better half of a pound weight on my pants. So where do I turn? The leatherman free k2. Nope. Thing did not lock properly. So I try a leatherman skelletool. No problems with it and I’ve been carrying it all day every day. It’s very light for a multi tool, no tools that I don’t need, the perfect EDC multi tool imo. I’m buying a kydex holster for it and I’ll carry it till the cows come home.
Ferro rod is exactly there for the right purpose, survival = back-up... survival situations is not something you plan for thus one carries back-up kit for that.... if u go camping take a lighter
Just one other point as well... I have a Surge as well and carry this whilst working, but when I go camping with my oldish caravan, I carry the Signal.... I use the whistle almost everyday, calling the kids or the dogs, or both.... dont have to make one, its right there, does not get lost and works a charm. And use the sharpener to keep an edge on my camping axe... i do not have to carry a separate file, separate whistle, separate etc...
And I use a multi purpose hex bit driver in the opening by the pummel for kinds of stuff that needs tightening or work on caravan, with screw bits, sockets, etc
Nope, I am glad leatherman is exploring this market, but they definitely need more dirt time. I think a reboot of the signal with an actual outdoorsman, survivalist or backpacker would result in a much more functional tool, and probably would focus more on a fewer number of really quality tools rather than a bunch of gimmick ones.
I think that's a very fair assessment of the Signal, and really nicely done in depth review of it. I do really love the pommel it has though. Having a hammer would be so useful on a more work/edc focused tool. I would love if they took the Signal frame and got rid of the serrations, replaced the saw with a nice pair of scissors, and the can opener with the screwdriver/prybar/package opener from the FREE series. It'd be even better if they found a way to cram in a full size file and replace the whistle with something more useful. That would be my perfect EDC tool.
I really like it. I would rather have the hammer than most tools. So much lighter than my Charge AL. I can use the pocket clip comfortably. Not a big fan of wearing tools on my belt in a case. If I need this knife for a survivalist situation it was not planned. I got lost or something else. Not why I bought. I bought it because of the hammer. They should ad this hammer to the surge.
Has to be the right banding material. It is used on the railroads. It has holes punched down the center. Cut a piece off that leaves three holes and then bend it over, instant whistle. Never really checked to see how loud it is. It will be close to 150db. You could use regular banding material, but you have to drill holes in it.
Pretty sure this tool was made for emergency situations such as getting hit by a hurricane or massive floods and u needed a tool to make it through the day. Hence the signal name incase u needed help or make alot of noise with the whistle to get help. Ferro rod to make a fire.
For a survival tool I’d take the rebar over this any day. Have a dedicated ferro rod on you and a whistle. 1,000 strikes on a rod and a real whistle is gonna be a lot better. Full sized knives and all as well

Hi, Thanks for the review! Yeah, I agree with Leonardo who commented below. There can be differences to survive while camping down the road with your neighbors compare to real survive alone in the wild jungle or forest. For this purpose I would add Signal to the 1st - camping category. And for the 2nd - real survival category, I would like to see maybe something like MUT..? Which is more robust, but on the other hand, MUT is designed for guns, tactics and military. Anyway, it would be great, if Leatherman comes up with another survival tool, more robust than Signal, have maybe 21 or more tools. That would be the ultimate one 😃 Cheers
Personally, I think so. I would sooner trust the Surge over the Signal. I just think it is far more capable. Maybe a second version of this tool will come out a bit better.
I think the biggest problem with this tool is more a problem with Leatherman than the tool itself. I think they're capable of making the "perfect" survival knife in their multi-tool format, but would reqire more retooling of their manufacturing line that would make the knife a low/none profit venture. The only tools that are custom to this tool are small and relatively cheap by comparison to the rest. As a result, I'd rather just carry a Wave/Charge/Surge.
I carry three 22lr cartridges in a sealed straw for camping. Gunpowder for fire starting, lead for fishing weights (grasping, but maybe), empty casing for a whistle. x3.
So if you had only one choice of multi tool to bring out in the wild you would choose a multi tool that doesn't have the ability to start a fire? That's crazy ahah

I'd much rather cary my G10 Earth one better. It's similar in weight, more robust and better tools. All I need to do to it is put Rebar awl in it. Coming soon!
Samuel Lacavera I have a couple of benchmade knives. I carry a higher end folder away from work. I have a large Chris Reeves. Bit overpriced, but a real work of art.
Hello Ben, thanks for the honest review, it is controversial, I think the Signal is intended as a tool for camping, or a camping emergency situation tool, for this purpose, it is well designed I think. As a general survival tool, it is not perfect. If I try to imagine the perfect survival tool I look for versatility, because I don't know in which environment I will need it. If I'm lost in a wood, I will need to start a fire. I will need the whistle too. But the lack of micro screwdriver it is always disappointing for people like me that wear glasses. In my opinion the best survival multi tool is a wave plus with awl and back-up ferro Rod, or a Surge with micro screw driver and back-up ferro Rod. As always, I ask too much!.
This things seems like half a wave, i would rather have that and add a sharpal (small sharpener, has integrated ferro rod and whistle and useable diamond file rod)
I wanted to love the signal buuuut meh 😑. I feel like the Signal+Any Other Leatherman multi tool is a great set up for survival purposes. You can also just buy their Ferro rod, whistle and file parts separately and carry on your person or a small pouch.
Maybe a bit. I was discouraged with this particular multi tool design though. I just don’t think that it does enough considering what it was designed to accomplish.
I appreciate the video, but you talk about a "survival situation" like when it hits the fan you have a choice. You'll learn the best tool to have in a survival situation is the one you have on you...

I agree with you on most of what you’ve said on this tool. However, the wire capabilities can help prevent that survival situation. I used to have a Signal and I was out riding my dual sport. Some wiring broke on me which caused the bike to shut down. It took a while to get everything bandaged up and I did end up spending the night and finishing the job in the morning but the Signal having wire cutters and crimpers kept me from having to push my bike out of the woods (god knows how long that would have taken) so I will say that I like the choice of plier head for this tool
By far my favorite leatherman, and favorite multitool. I never leave the house without both the signal, bit kit+bit extension. It’s served me extremely well these past 2 years. Love this multitool!!

Thank you for your feed back on the Signal….I had been interested a little bit in this, because of the light weight EDC, the awl and the fire striker….and to be honest the colors availability…. Thing is, I carry the Wave + for years and still do….it is my EDC, I wear it leather holster I made on my belt, rarely is not strapped to me…unless its going out to a fancy function or if I am jogging….I like the Ideal of having something a little lighter and not bulky….hence the clip was a +. That being said, living in Montana…working on ranches and in the lumber/Hardware store in town, riding checking stock, hunting, camping and etc…the Wave +, has done every thing I have needed it for. Your comment in regards to feeling that bit heft of the Wave+…is reassuring. For me….the single most valuable change for me doing ranch work….in which Leatherman could improve the Wave….would be a GOOD awl….use that tool as much as I do the both knives on the Wave+. If Leatherman could ditch the eyeglass screwdriver and replace it with a nice useable awl….the Wave + would damn near perfect for me! I understand this video is a couple of years old….but incase you read this….thank you for your input!!! from Montana….have a great week!
I love mine, but really miss a pair of scissors. Got a Victorinox SwissCard and carry it in the signal big nylon sheath along with a mini flashlight and a proper magnesium flint from SOL. It all fits great!

Great review and you have some interesting points on the Signal. In 2021, the Leatherman Signal is still in the lineup on the website. It's one of the best sellers AND considering all that you said, it's the ONLY tool (In the Leatherman lineup) that can help start a fire. Consider that when you are stranded in the wilderness and you have your Rebar in the pocket!
Its such a rabbit hole though, isn't it? See I would tend to agree that the Signal checks a lot of boxes on the list and if I was stranded in the wilderness with *one thing in my pocket* then an MT with an onboard ferro rod would pretty much be the thing I would want. Bonus points for the onboard sharpener.
That being said, I would have to ask what the hell am I doing in the wilderness with "only one thing in my pocket"? I like to imagine that anyone going anywhere near the wilderness should have, in the very least, a multitool *and* a bic lighter. These are at a bare minimum. You probably also want to have a diamond rod and a steel water bottle if you're going so far into the wilderness you could get stranded there.
So having those extra items beside the MT, I would absolutely prefer to have a Rebar because it allows for a few things that the Signal is coming up short on -- like a file and a chunky flat head. Not to mention the huge advantage of having two separate blades, one of them being full fine edge.
General logic might suggest that the more tools you have to manipulate the environment you're in, the more plentiful your options for survival-related things. Especially when you factor in the chances of running into things like old metal refuse, wire fencing from days long past, etc.
But that is, of course, assuming you have firecraft covered without relying on your MT having a tiny ferro rod in the handle.
So maybe we can challenge the adage that "failing to plan is planning to fail" with the caveat "unless you have a LM Signal on you" but that quickly extends to the idea that everyone should always carry a leatherman signal *just in case*; because nobody plans to get stranded, it just happens. However, your risk of getting stranded drastically increases when you go to the woods so at those times it's probably safe to say you should be throwing a fire kit in your pocket and then you can carry whatever multitool you think will affect all the other aspects of survivability beyond simple fire-starting. And weighing that out would, in my estimation, naturally lead to much more capable tools like the Rebar, Wave, Supertool, Surge, Swisstool(s).
Small bic lighter solves that problem or waterproof matches
I mean if you're stranded in the wilderness with *just* a Rebar, you are either extremely unlucky or extremely foolish. Most people would at least also have a Bic lighter and if you're in the wilderness long enough to need a sharpener and you didn't bring one already? Well you're probably ill-prepared in a way the Signal isn't going to offset.
The point is that the signal can do a bad job at all the needed things. And in a survival situation you will be happy to have something that does a bad job than having nothing. And while you aren’t using it most of the time, you are happy that it doesn’t weigh much, basically making it not noticeable, so that you can enjoy your trip, hike whatever… and if shit hits the fan, this will get you out of a jam in a pinch. And that’s why it is my EDC of choice.
The half serrated blade was my biggest hangup with this knife. I absolutely detested the factory blade! The solution was to make a custom blade for the Signal. I have a video on my channel showing the blade and the process.
Video idea/request: demonstrate how to make a whistle out of banding material, like you mention in this review. Thanks for all the great videos. Keep them coming, and I’ll keep watching!
I certainly will, I actually thought about doing it the other day. The problem is, I don't have any banding material right now. Whenever we are on the job next, I will be sure to set some aside to do just that.
I think people misunderstand the intention of the Signal. It's not meant to be a primary survival tool, but a back up set of tools for redundancy. Generally people who are prepared to use these tools will already be carrying a fixed blade knife, a folding saw, a ferro rod, and a whistle.
As bushman, I personally would swap out the awl for a cord/strap cutter, or swap the combo blade for a serrated blade for the purposes of cutting cord. I'd also swap out the can opener and 2d bit driver for a 3d bit driver and add a glass breaker for vehicle egress.
Your words speak for the people, leatherman needs to update this design, great idea but lacks Necessary tools for camping and survivalists.
I choose to carry a Leatherman Rebar with me when I'm camping, it makes the most amount of sense to me. It's a little bit lighter than what is usually on my belt, I don't really mind added weight but being able to dial it down a little bit is nice.

Excellent review; logical, thorough & your recommendation of an appropriate alternative/s, remains within the Leatherman product line (hence; unbiased). Considering the Lenox wood cutting blades you've discussed (& demonstrated) in one of your videos (which fit the Leatherman Surge) - my preferred survival tool is the Leatherman Surge; no hesitation
I just feel that overall the Surge is a much more capable tool. Maybe that’s my bias shining through.

Thanks for oyur honesty. I bought the Signal, I do not like the blade for the exact reasons you pointed out. After owning the Signal, I came to think of it as the Boy Scout of the multitool lineup. Functional and handy but doesn't go far enough.
I wonder if you can swap out the combo blade with a blade from the wave/charge? That combo blade is the main detractor for me. Cool tool otherwise.

In your personal opinion which is the the best Leatherman for camping instead of the signal would you recommend that has a straight blade knives & window breaker & most importantly can & will cut a 5 ought hooks as I fish alot that is much needed in my life. I own this tool and use it for restaurant work. I'm a bartender/manager. It does a great job. But, I would rather own a Curl with the hammer/bottle opener. I don't need the saw and would rather have the file. I also don't mind the combination blade because the curated blade works great for cutting cardboard. I absolutely love the removable diamond coated file/knife sharpener. Being able to sharpening your blade is a great thing.
Just got this MT and im replacing the sharpener and whistle etc with bit holders so ill have 3 bits, like a super skeletool. I like it so far. Def not for survival tho. Great EDC option.
Hi mate been watching your channel so much trying to pick a multi tool to replace my Leatherman Rebar. I pretty much want all the same tools but i like the outside tool functions on newer leathermans. Is there any you can suggest to take a look at? I like the Wave plus but im not sure if its worth the extra cash for pretty much a pair of scissors and bit driver? I do carry a Micra on my keys as it was a free gift years ago when i bought the Rebar so between the 2 i kinda have everything i need! I just like shiny new stuff!!
The only thing that I don’t like about the Wave+ is the lack of an awl. However, if you already have a Rebar, you’re in luck. Swapping out the awl out of the Rebar in favor of the Wave+ micro driver is a very common and easy modification. Unless of course you need the micro driver. That would be my recommendation.

I dig the signal. The sharpener should have been a micro file similar to the file found on the Wave+ IMO. Then we’d get a durable diamond coated knife sharpener plus a file. The whistle/ferro would have been better suited as a magnesium block with a beefier ferrorod. But other than I always pack it when going out in the woods and tethered to my belt via 550 when fishing. All in all I think it’s a great tool for outdoor use. I treat it as a tool that has several backup items that will likely never get used (aka sharpener/ferro).

I think they make this as a urban SHTF scenario survival tool, that doubles as a camping tool. Nowadays most people do glamping not traditional camping, or bushcraft. So I could see the use of the bit driver for all of the comfort items people bring now. Good review. You make some good points about the additions that could be made, and the limitations of the awl. I agree about the combination blade.
Just to add as a non glamper, ha ha. I upgraded to this because I had a small crummy multi-tool from Mountain Warehouse (Don't judge me, I bought it as a total newbie dayhiker), but the amount of times I needed the pliers on it and the little screwdriver for fixing hiking gear has been insane. I've pulled sticks and rocks out of microspikes, fixed broken links on spikes, fixed loose screws on hiking poles, fixed snowshoes etc. That screwdriver feature has served me well as a hiker and backpacker. I can see why it's less great for bushcrafters, but it's definitely been a great feature for me.

I edc a signal. The form factor is great and all the tools except the fire starter/whistle are useful to me on a daily basis. I agree with you about the knife blade, there’s no good reason for the signal to have a partly serrated blade, and I would prefer if the saw was replaced with a T-shank adapter. Otherwise, the tool is almost perfect.
The use case is more as a multitool that you can use in the woods than as a multitool meant to be used in the woods, if that makes sense. If I’m going into the brush for a week, I might prefer a surge or a MUT instead (I don’t own either, but I’m judging off of toolsets) but the signal wouldn’t be detrimental. However, if I’m going on a short hike that goes longer than I expected, then that’s when the signal’s toolset makes sense
I was working in south Texas and we were in extremely thick vegetation carrying things in and out of a place that you could very easily become lost. I actually did become lost and my team had to come search for me. I sat down in one place and tried not to cry. I was scared. Luckily I had my Signal and it helped me breath a little easier knowing that I had a fire tool. I had a secondary whistle which saved me but it was really nice to have a fire tool to keep me from having another panic attack
And that is why we always stay prepared. I could definitely see the usefulness of that fire starter in that scenario.

Lot of people are buying ferrorod only because it's cool, and never train themself. The problem is that they don't realize that start a fire with this tool in a stressful situation is way more difficult than its appears (especially on pro bushcrafters youtube channels...). And the day they really need it, they don't know how it work.
I try to look at the Leatherman signal as an everyday carry or if I use it as a survival tool for me it's only a backup multi-tool.
I think this one would be hard to justify as an EDC.

I don’t know that I’m an expert. In any case, each individual is an expert about what fits their needs the best. All I try to do is steer people in the right direction.

As you said, a lot of the survival tools are back up tools but when you are out working in canyons, it's hard to carry individual tools that this leatherman has. I use all off the working tools like bit drivers and wire cutters/crimper. The signal just gives me some piece of mind that if something happens, my multi tool alone can get me through the night

I've been carrying my Skeletool CX for a while now on top of many other pocket goodies but wanted to condense down. This was what I was looking for. Not too crazy about the blade but then again I never use a knife because of a pocket utility blade. The gimmicky fire starter and sharpener are being replaced with bit holding inserts from Eric Au and I think I'm going to try and mod it with some sort of scalpel holder rather than the saw that I'll never use in EDC. A lot of work for an MT but in my opinion, a perfect MT doesn't exist.
You say that the 1/4 driver is just to add functionality on paper, but that 1/4 inch driver was my only tool mated to a hex screw driver to squeeze in between the the windscreen and dashboard to get the dashboard screws out on my 40 year old Land Rover!
My workaround for its shortcomings was to just carry it alongside the Gerber centerdrive. That way I have tools for mechanical applications and outdoors. Centerdrive is useless for wire cutting mostly and signal is not so good a handling screws. But signal is compact enough to be a great edc but centerdrive feels like a toolbox
I’ve always wished that Leatherman would make a dedicated screwdriver with a pocket clip. One that would fold and be able to hold about three additional bits on board. Maybe the size of a single Wave handle.
What do you find the most useful on the CenterDrive?
@@txtoolcrib it's got to be either the awl or prybar. The prybar is great at grabbing and popping clips out of vehicle panels and the little wire ties that attach wires to brackets.
Samuel Lacavera I do like that little awl. It’s quite sharp. I’m kind of on the fence regarding the pry bar though. Sounds like it works for you though.
I still think that a multi tool should be as generalized as possible. A MT for this, a MT for that... if I‘m able to foresee what’s gonna happen, I can bring specialized tools- which are always superior. I do like some ideas on this, like the pommel with the hex driver, the removable file, too. But almost everything else is mediocre at best. My favorite MT is still the Victorinox Spirit S. And then combine it with some...
I love the signal. I don’t think of it as a survival tool though. I removed the whistle and file so it is all metal and edc it like a beefed up skeletool.
I wonder if anyone had 3D printed replacements for the whistle and file to hold on board bits.
Yeah there are a few guys who've done that, they allow you to hold 2 extra bits in place of the sharpener and ferro rod.
I like it and think of it as a "bigger Skeletool" too. TH-cam reviewers can't get past the marketing material and it probably blows their mind that someone would use this as an EDC tool.

Ben the combo Serrated/Straight edge Blade is a better all around Emergency blade for cutting Synthetic especially wet and under tension with a cleaner cut than a full Serrated, a full serrated will ruin the end of your line that you cut even if you tape the end, but a Combo blade (especially wet line under tension, the serrated will start the cut by breaking strands and the straight edge will use that momentum of cut and make a cleaner better cut, thats why The knives for this environment are designed that way, wet, tension must reuse the line,
Pummel means to strike.
It’s a verb snd an action.
Pommel, on the other hand, is the very end of a knife handle.
It’s a noun because it’s an object and a thing.

No MT is a "survival tool" anyway. For example if I had to take one tool it would be a strong full tang knife. Even though I usually take only the lightest folder available on hikes, I do on occasion take at least the F1 if there is a realistic chance to get stranded. Which means that I would always have at least a folder (including EDC) in every situation I'd have a MT. So it's blade is at best a second or even third backup (I would probably not carry a MT at all on a hike, never had, it is just theoretical). Same for every other tool on it.
Don't actually need a knife at all. If built on personal design I might even completely ditch it, or better put a fully serrated one only.
The advantages I see in this tool are multiple carry options and modularity, as the whistle/rod and sharpener can be exchanged with 3d printed alternatives used as bit holders, which is more useful around town. The ability to use standard hex bits with more leverage in that position is also interesting.
I would say a knife+modded signal+micra+hex-bit-set-with-extender combo would cover most casual uses that do not require a full toolbox and it all fits in a small cellphone-sized pouch.
Survival seems gimmicky to me as a field itself, don't realy care and such tools are more often than not just unnecessary weight. Than again Europe has little extended wilderness and good orientation skills are more often than not all the survival skill one needs in the wild. Alaska might of course be very different.
So interesting as a modular tool, not realy for survival.
I only use my Signal as redundancy for my other tools when I go camping/hiking/trekking
This is how it should be used. So many people saying "The ferro rod isn't great, carry a proper one", but you can say that about any tool on a multi tool. You absolutely should have a better/more reliable fire starting method or two. They will never replace purpose built tools. When I go out, I have a proper ferro rod, along with a couple other fire starting methods, but the fact that this rod is integrated into the tool means they won't get separated.

You missed one tool, at least I think you did. The tip of the pommel tool also serves as a tool that will grab the bolt of a rifle in order to clear rifle jams. I would prefer a replacement straight edge blade instead of a combo serrated blade. My biggest negative is that there are too many plastic bits sticking out and in my experience, nothing made from plastic will survive long in the African bush.
I just purchased the signal , and I have other Leatherman multi tools and I like them all ! And the best thing of all is that they are made in Great U.S of A next thing to purchase is the tread ! Cheers 👍🍺

Although less common than 1/4" bits, 3/16" are getting momentum, especially on smaller size screwdrivers. The Picquic Multique screwdriver is a good example of.
By the way, I'd like to see your take on any of the Picquic. Made in Canada, I've been using them since the 90'. I carry both Original (with a Robertson #2 ready) and Multique (with a Philips #2 ready) on any jobsite that I show up.

@@txtoolcrib I've count yesterday the number of Picquic screwdrivers that I have in various toolboxes and kits. It's scary. I own 23 of them, including the very first one that I bought 28 years ago. Overall, I only had one broken bit (a flat one, doing something that I shouldn't had to do...) and one handle that cracked (but not shattered) from a 40' fall.
As mentioned in my earlier comment, I carry two Picquic on my toolbelt. My main screwdriver is a regular one with 1/4" bits that I also use in my impact driver. This one is always set up with a Robertson #2. The other one is a Multique with 3/16" bits, st with a Philips #2. I do carry two different one only because they are the screws that I deal the most with. They are easy to recognize as their handle are different, making it far easier to reach into my pouch with looking at it.
If they put that clip on the Rebar, Leatherman would have officially beat the game. Fire your entire design team, they're done.
There is no other SINGLE tool that can make you a fire or send smoke & sound signals. Yes i also know that stuffing an Axe in my trousers a fishing rod, fire steel, koocking gear etc makes way more sense...but you end up with a bulge in your trousers right? So as a single tool that can make fire and can help you make fish traps etc i would go for this SINGLE tool. There is just no other like it exept for stuffed bug out bags with multiple tools.
I’m not a survivalist. I live in a city. I usually carry a spyderco shaman, but I find myself needing more than a blade. But I’m not about to carry my surge, no need for the better half of a pound weight on my pants. So where do I turn? The leatherman free k2. Nope. Thing did not lock properly. So I try a leatherman skelletool. No problems with it and I’ve been carrying it all day every day. It’s very light for a multi tool, no tools that I don’t need, the perfect EDC multi tool imo. I’m buying a kydex holster for it and I’ll carry it till the cows come home.

To me it is a good compromise of functionality and size/weight

Ferro rod is exactly there for the right purpose, survival = back-up... survival situations is not something you plan for thus one carries back-up kit for that.... if u go camping take a lighter

Just one other point as well... I have a Surge as well and carry this whilst working, but when I go camping with my oldish caravan, I carry the Signal.... I use the whistle almost everyday, calling the kids or the dogs, or both.... dont have to make one, its right there, does not get lost and works a charm. And use the sharpener to keep an edge on my camping axe... i do not have to carry a separate file, separate whistle, separate etc...
And I use a multi purpose hex bit driver in the opening by the pummel for kinds of stuff that needs tightening or work on caravan, with screw bits, sockets, etc
Those points make sense, but what about a full length file, wouldn’t that serve you better?
I dont use a file on my axes... when i go camping this diamond sharpener works good enough. When i get home i put the axe on a wet-stone if required
Nope, I am glad leatherman is exploring this market, but they definitely need more dirt time. I think a reboot of the signal with an actual outdoorsman, survivalist or backpacker would result in a much more functional tool, and probably would focus more on a fewer number of really quality tools rather than a bunch of gimmick ones.

I think that's a very fair assessment of the Signal, and really nicely done in depth review of it.
I do really love the pommel it has though. Having a hammer would be so useful on a more work/edc focused tool. I would love if they took the Signal frame and got rid of the serrations, replaced the saw with a nice pair of scissors, and the can opener with the screwdriver/prybar/package opener from the FREE series. It'd be even better if they found a way to cram in a full size file and replace the whistle with something more useful. That would be my perfect EDC tool.

I really like it. I would rather have the hammer than most tools. So much lighter than my Charge AL. I can use the pocket clip comfortably. Not a big fan of wearing tools on my belt in a case. If I need this knife for a survivalist situation it was not planned. I got lost or something else. Not why I bought. I bought it because of the hammer. They should ad this hammer to the surge.
That hammer function can be important for those that need it.

Has to be the right banding material. It is used on the railroads. It has holes punched down the center. Cut a piece off that leaves three holes and then bend it over, instant whistle. Never really checked to see how loud it is. It will be close to 150db. You could use regular banding material, but you have to drill holes in it.

Pretty sure this tool was made for emergency situations such as getting hit by a hurricane or massive floods and u needed a tool to make it through the day. Hence the signal name incase u needed help or make alot of noise with the whistle to get help. Ferro rod to make a fire.

For a survival tool I’d take the rebar over this any day. Have a dedicated ferro rod on you and a whistle. 1,000 strikes on a rod and a real whistle is gonna be a lot better. Full sized knives and all as well

Yeah, I agree with Leonardo who commented below.
There can be differences to survive while camping down the road with your neighbors compare to real survive alone in the wild jungle or forest.
For this purpose I would add Signal to the 1st - camping category.
And for the 2nd - real survival category, I would like to see maybe something like MUT..? Which is more robust, but on the other hand, MUT is designed for guns, tactics and military.
Anyway, it would be great, if Leatherman comes up with another survival tool, more robust than Signal, have maybe 21 or more tools. That would be the ultimate one 😃

So taking in account all you said, the Surge would be a much better survival tool than the Signal.
Personally, I think so. I would sooner trust the Surge over the Signal. I just think it is far more capable. Maybe a second version of this tool will come out a bit better.
I think the biggest problem with this tool is more a problem with Leatherman than the tool itself. I think they're capable of making the "perfect" survival knife in their multi-tool format, but would reqire more retooling of their manufacturing line that would make the knife a low/none profit venture. The only tools that are custom to this tool are small and relatively cheap by comparison to the rest. As a result, I'd rather just carry a Wave/Charge/Surge.
I carry three 22lr cartridges in a sealed straw for camping. Gunpowder for fire starting, lead for fishing weights (grasping, but maybe), empty casing for a whistle. x3.

Hello Ben, thanks for the honest review, it is controversial, I think the Signal is intended as a tool for camping, or a camping emergency situation tool, for this purpose, it is well designed I think. As a general survival tool, it is not perfect. If I try to imagine the perfect survival tool I look for versatility, because I don't know in which environment I will need it. If I'm lost in a wood, I will need to start a fire. I will need the whistle too. But the lack of micro screwdriver it is always disappointing for people like me that wear glasses. In my opinion the best survival multi tool is a wave plus with awl and back-up ferro Rod, or a Surge with micro screw driver and back-up ferro Rod. As always, I ask too much!.

I wanted to love the signal buuuut meh 😑. I feel like the Signal+Any Other Leatherman multi tool is a great set up for survival purposes. You can also just buy their Ferro rod, whistle and file parts separately and carry on your person or a small pouch.
It was an interesting design. I think I would stick with my Surge and carry a ferro rod separately personally.
