This tool was a blessing working on aircraft maintenance as a back up. Waking 3/4 of a mile out to the aircraft and realizing you forgot something is miserable. Additionally, with a free spinning nut on the back side of a bolt where a tool won’t fit in a tight space, the crunch feature saved me hours of headache. Clamping down on the nut, spinning it and allowing the body of the leathermen jam against something allowed me to get so much work done more efficiently.
Hi, Jose again from PR. I've had the Crunch for many years now and I can't even remember where I got it; I don't even have the receipt. Having a portable "Vise Grip" was the selling point for me and like you say, it has a "cool factor" to it. I've bolted down so many things with this tool that the price of admission in my view is worth it. I have it in my glove compartment of my car and the Free P4 is my "being well dressed up daily in pocket carry on when you really needed it, better than having it then not having it tool". The Surge will be my next multitool and probably will alternate as a carry on and glove compartment heavy duty multitool. Sorry for the mouth fulls, but I think you get my point :-}. This was another great review man!
This is the multitool I carried in the US Marines and it served me well for all the tasks I put it trough. It is an amazing tool that really made my life easier. The only problem I had with it was I stripped the Phillip's screwdriver during normal use, sent it to Leatherman and they replaced the part.
Own 2 picked them up in second hand stores paid $10.00 for one $19.00 for the other. Both in as new condition. Main reason to own one is the locking plier function. One of mine is with me every day. Great tool and great review.
The crunch and pioneer/farmer X are a great combo with arguably zero redundancy. I use it with the pioneer and carry a couple jigsaw blades for the pin vise.
Im more of a collector than anything, but ive made this my edc. Possible best pliers in a multitool, sharp knife, file can function as a light prybar, amazing functional bit driver...its awesome! Paired with the micra that i have on my keychain for a good set of scissors, ive got the bases covered. Love the review!
One of its best features is the ability to become a fixed handle for many types of saw blades and files, especially because of the clever little notch inside the jaw's teeth. That was the biggest selling point for me. What were the other edc tools that you keep in your truck besides the surge and crunch?
I only pay out for quality. Not some cheap-jack Chinese products that Amazon or similar online traders push out to the often, unknowing, public. I have a number of Leatherman tools, but also Victorinox Swiss Army knives only because they work, and work extremely efficiently, though I will shop around for best price, every Leatherman is bought straight from their factory. Similarly, I don't use the Crunch much, but it's more than served the purpose. Thank you for your review.
I ordered one. As a plumber I already have a toolbag full of everything I need, but no room for vicegrips, but every once in a while they would’ve been handy. Might be a good carry instead of a charge or wave, as I already have needlenose pliers and linesman with me
15km into the back country of BC, one of the spark plugs on my sled worked itself loose and I could not get it to stay tight. With light fading another sledder showed up , whipped out his Crunch and got it tight enough to get me back to my truck. Bought one as soon as I could
Just FYI in case ya didn’t know... Each “tool” of a multi tool is called an implement. So it is a 15 implement Multi Tool. Just what the designers call them. Love the vids. Thanks.
Got two first year 1999 Crunch's in 2016. One is mint and other holding up with a few scratches. Oh, the 1999/2000 Crunch versions had the best fit and finish. If you get one from those two years, it'll blow your mind. I paid $80ea more for the NIB 1999 examples. Leather sheatha too. When I did clock repair, this tool was indispensable, because the locking+pin point in the head were incredible for pinion locking. File is short, blade is show, drivers are short. Thing is? OMG the quality of those shorter tools is awesome. The file on thr '99/'20 ones is hyper aggressive on cross cut and elegantly fine/consistent on the other side.
Always wanted this tool, I just find it so hard to spend the $100+ dollars on this when the only reason for its existence is a set of locking pliers. I wish that they made this tool with more implements so it could be used as an EDC multi tool. As it is right now it is just a set of locking pliers to go along with my EDC multitool. It is very hard to justify when you can get a pair of visegrips for less than $20 and carry those with your multitool for the same functionality.
I don’t think the file is bad, I just think it is a little short to be particularly useful. I actually love the Crunch. Compact and able to do jobs other multi tools can’t.
@@txtoolcrib with my job as a diesel mechanic. I find a small file great. Especially for rear main seal housings that the previous apprentice burred up... Lol. I'm definitely getting one.
The Crunch is the right tool for me. It's the only Leatherman multi-tool that I do own. The original tool broke, and was replaced free of charge. The replacement has now lasted for 13 years and still going strong. Used it for every light work. I have added a few accessories to increased its functionality. All in all, a great tool to use.
I remove the hex driver screw, place an extender, and use a miniature socket set. It adds a bit of flexibility, with one disadvantage...the weight of the the extra sockets, including the socket clip. Good for the car and around the house. The vice grip can really clamp down on jig saw blades. I carry a couple in a sheath, along with the bit driver extender and various bits. Hope that this helps.
Nice review. I hardly use this tool, but it comes very handy when I need it. To me the two main features are the locking vise grip, and the 1/4" hex hole. Beware as tooth are pretty agressive and grippy thus can mark your item, even if it's made in titanium or steel. It's a bit too pricy and you may consider buying a regular mini vise grip instead which is cheaper.
I stashed mine in my bug out bag with a small (3) bit bar, a bit bar extension, a p38 and a titanium bottle opener. It is light weight and all packed together.
My love for multitools runs pretty deep, but I find the pliers on these pliered tools to be lacking. However, the crunch is a tool I can get behind. The surge has been my favorite for years, but I switched over to the Swiss Champ about five years ago and went with Knipex small Cobra and the flat jaw. Both being the same weight combined as my Leatherman, while my Swiss champ contains added features like first aid, gear repair, and fire. I’ll be adding this crunch with a small bit set and sockets to the tool kit
It is a very handy tool when you need it. I am a huge fan of the Surge myself, though I generally like the needle nose pliers, there are times when a larger tipped pliers would have been more convenient.
Great review. The internal tools are serviceable but as you said the selling point is the locking pliers. I was in charge of a theatrical group at my church (script writing, prop making, scenery, sound system and special effects) and carried the Crunch in one pouch, my PST in another and had everything I needed for on-the-spot fixes. G'day and thanks for the information in the Leatherman Crunch
Thanks for the great review. As I watched, I wondered why I'd ever need or want this tool, esp. at the price vs regular vise grips. Then your comments at the end summed up my thoughts perfectly and also gave insight into how someone might justify having one. It might be cool if they offered a simplified version without the mediocre multitools. Just nice foldable locking pliers (with the pin vise) at a better price, maybe offered paired with a solid multitool.
Since this tool usually pairs with other multitools, the internal tools are mostly redundant. They should either remove them or, better yet, replace them with tools that aren't usually on other multitools to make this a versatile specialist.
As a residential plumber l really considered the crunch. Mainly for soldering applications like crimping copper fittings to pipe when I don't want them to spin on me or to lift pipe of a the ground to solder ect. But at that price its just not justified to me. Besides l always have channel locks and other tools on me or close by. Very cool tool however and great review 👍
I'm an electrical apprentice, 1st year, and I'm not lying if these had replaceable wire cutters and a better wire stripper this would be the tool someone would file agrievance on me for
Isn't it supossed to be that the files are so hardened that the are prone to break if droped or ir used as lever, so using a file as a flat head screw driver is not the best idea if the thing is really hard to take out?
Good review - I think you will find as time goes on, you will need gloves( try the fingerless) to save wear and tear on your hands, to give you a better grip and to avoid sprains...

I have the gerber version of that I think it’s much better because the jaws slide in and out of the handles like the center drive and there’s no other tools on it it’s strictly pocket size locking pliers
I think that would be a great use for this multi tool. It can be used as regular needle nose pliers or locking pliers, both would be advantageous for small repairs.
Yeah that's actually what i was about to tell, You are lacking saws and files and normal pliers for really just one tool, better have a normal crunching tool that's dedicated to that sole purpose... Sorry for the weird english
I'm actually more inclined to carry similarly sized Vise-Grips if it's something I'm keeping in my truck or a toolbox. They sit pretty narrow in a pocket when the screw isn't putting pressure on the jaws, just a little longer. I work in a manufacturing facility so I'm sure it would probably be different for someone that had to do work on-site, but even when I was doing on-site stuff I'd still be fighting hard to talk myself into buying a set of these. lol If you want a good laugh, check out Vise-Grip's idea of a multi-plier... there's some REAL innovation going on there! /sarcasm
It’s hard to disagree with you considering the price of this tool. It does carry a bit better than a normal set of vice grips though. The little notch that they put in the needle nose is really very helpful though.
I may not need it every day, it may be expensive, but I want it. I already have the Surge, but I'm buying this. Thank you for this video...you're almost as bad as Nutnfancy...
You're welcome. I think you will really like this multi tool. I don't get a lot of use out of mine, but for those few times that I do, it sure comes in handy.
Chance Rogers not stupid at all. Some other versions of vise pliers actually don’t fold down. You don’t know what you don’t know until you know it. What are your thoughts about the Crunch now?
@@txtoolcrib I like it a lot more now. I have seen some of those other multitools that had vise grips as the pliers and they didn't fold just like you said and I think that is what was just the idea that I had in my head when I saw them online.
The stamping on the inside of the handles is 0799. That could reference a manufacturing time as July of 1999, or it could just be the part number. I am unsure.
Don't buy the tool it's a piece of junk. After about 6 months of use the small round steel pin that slides back and forth in the slot which is in front of the screw bolt falls out; once that happens the entire tool falls apart and can't be used ever again. That pin must have been press fitted into place. I was wondering if anyone ever tried to repair it by using the 'red permanent loctite' and got it to stay in place?
You dont buy a Crunch for the interior tools. You buy it it for the vice grips. Leatherman rider... keep getting free shit bro. Use that file to spread butter too.

It’s hard to disagree with you considering the price of this tool. It does carry a bit better than a normal set of vice grips though. The little notch that they put in the needle nose is really very helpful though.
Would i not better off to buy a small vice grip for alot less money? Or am i wrong?
I mean if im allready carrying a tool such as surge
Yeah, though it wouldn’t be as compact. Definitely cheaper though.
@@txtoolcrib sorry i commented before i watched to end i see you address this point near end 👍
Good Review Thank you
As stupid as it sounds, I've never given this tool a second look until now because I didn't realise the pliers folded away.
Hey Ben I bought leatherman crunch 😋😎
How do you like it?
I love it small and compact 😍
For a bike mechanic I think it's alright
I think it’s a pretty great tool, just a little on the pricey side.
I could take 6 oz. 60 miles on a bike. That's what I like.
If you find yourself needing to turn bolts, buy it you won't regret it.
Great multi tool for those that need it. I can attest.
Great review.
Thank you sir, I appreciate it.
Just got this .
Please.What is the date inside?
The stamping on the inside of the handles is 0799. That could reference a manufacturing time as July of 1999, or it could just be the part number. I am unsure.
I bought three pieces in 2018 and 2019, but all year 13 and 14.
@@txtoolcrib it's a third hand and a vise. Always with you!
Bordeaux it is extremely handy for sure.
@@txtoolcrib very love his! He's better than Kershaw, Gerber....
:30 Hmm, "close at bay" - ? I've heard "close at hand" and "at bay - meaning to keep away from oneself".
It happens.
There’s only one thing you can do with gloves on!
And that’s piss your pants!
$175 is too much for me
Don't buy the tool it's a piece of junk.
Did you get it warrantied?
You dont buy a Crunch for the interior tools. You buy it it for the vice grips. Leatherman rider... keep getting free shit bro. Use that file to spread butter too.
Yeah......that’s kinda what I said. I don’t get free stuff, not sure where that notion creeped into your head. I buy whatever I want, whenever I want.
Locking pliers/vise grip is an extremely useful tool
