Kay, the points you made in this video are expecially insightful. For instance celebrity iconic clothing. I spent my formativel years in the 60's, so it makes sense that my icons are Jackie Kennedy and actresses from that period. You hit the nail on the head with someone who takes 2 years to accept a style aesthetic. That explains definitely, where I shop. Thank you for this information!

Thanks so much Kay for all this info. Can't wait to start exploring those stores you suggested. This was my favorite one yet! Oh yes....Jacueline Kennedy and Melania Trump are my favorite well dressed laides. Clean and simple lines always.

I've determined my style is Coastal Grandmother in summer and French Chic in winter. I've curated my wardrobe along those lines. If a certain clothing item is having a moment, like a beige linen vest, I hunt for it. I found the perfect one for an affordable price at Old Navy. I find linen clothing at thrift stores, striped shirts on Amazon. I look expensive for less, saving my money for fun dinners and weekends and holidays with friends and lovers.

I have a similar attitude and way of shopping. I can find such treasurers for a lot less at thrift stores including Goodwill. Or, at retail stores I like , I wait for the sales/clearances. Classics always look good.

Melania Trump is my style icon. I liked your recommendation about window shopping higher end designers. I have way too many clothes that really don’t follow the recommendations you made for simple lines and colors. It’s true they look elegant. But maybe that’s just not my style. I may return that flowered peasant style shirt I just bought. Or not, and pair it with a denim midi and short boots. I flip between boho and Talbots classics!

Thank you for sharing. Generally tops are something we can work with to fit into our style, whereas pieces like pants and jacket are style setters. So maybe work with the shirt to see what you think. 😉

I never have a problem dressing in the fall or winter or for dressier occasions in the spring or summer . It's summer casual I have a problem with. I do not care for longer tops or shorter than elbow sleeves. I have a good figure so I like modest but form fitting tops that end at the waist. They are so hard to find. Luckily some I've had for years are still in good shape but I'd like new clothes. Your channel has given me some good ideas. Thank you Kay. 😊

Sounds like you know what you like and you stick with it. Love that. I suggest you look for tips that are labeled “cropped.” Most of the time they are not the crop tops of our past; they’re actually more the length you’re looking for, especially if you wear a mid or high rise pant. Thanks for sharing! 😊

This is a super educational video! Two thumbs up! My sis in law is my style icon in her dress, her home, her culinary skills! She has a classic sense of style and has perfected minimalism with quality pieces. I find that I spend much more than her on clothing, but she always looks the most put together, somehow! I do believe there is an art and eye for these aesthetics… you have done a small master class here on how to figure these things out. Thank you!

These are such fun ways to gauge what is stylish or not. I peruse high-end brands all the time, such as Ralph Lauren, to get inspired with ideas on how I can incorporate those looks using my wardrobe pieces. Some of my favorite stylish icons are Audrey Hepburn and Princess Diana. Thanks for this video. My next project is to go through my wardrobe and declutter so that I can create a more minimal one. In 7th grade, my home ec teacher had us think about someone whose style we admired. I guess Paula Silverman was my icon. She basically wore button up shirts and a line skirts. Her shoes were always polished. She looked tidy everyday. What I admired was that her clothes were always clean, pressed and fit her perfectly. Pretty novel for a 7th grader in the early ‘60’s. I still always go for those three basic things, even when I am clearing land or shoveling rocks in my yard. (I don’t always end up looking clean and tidy after those chores! )I have added a love for color and texture and a classic/ boho style. I am going to look at Alice and Olivia and Cinq a Sept. Thank you for your good ideas! I swear I always feel better, maybe even younger, when I am tidy with my own spin of color a pair of boho earrings!

This is an excellent video! Thank you for sharing this. I've really been thinking about the three words to describe my style and so far, I've come up with two: feminine and polished. Still thinking about the third one. I've gone back and read/re-read some of your blog posts about cultivating a wardrobe, and the posts are very helpful and a reminder to me. As usual, you have brought a new perspective to the way I view my wardrobe. I like classic, tailored clothes. I would say my style icons run to the Doris Day and Audrey Hepburn and Princess Catherine. However, I never feel as good as I want to when I try to emulate them. So I have given a great deal of thought to my style angles and my color choices and my proportions. With your help, figuring out that I am short waisted has solved so many of my fashion questions. Tops are too long, my shoulders are too slight, my idea of too much fabric is spot on and I have to trust that because I get swallowed up very easily by clothes. The art I'm most drawn to is usually very colorful and that along with your advice has gotten me to stop buying black. I now buy shades of blue and my wardrobe is getting more coordinated because of it. My style angles are active, effortless, and relaxed. That goes against what draws my eye. What draws my eye is the very tailored look with pumps and a cropped jacket. I am trying to find a style where I can bring some of those elements in, but I always want to be able to go for a walk without having to change my clothes! I chose active as a style angle because I don't want to look athletic or crunchy granola. I just want to be able to move and get outside when I have a chance.

I love this. I’m working through similar things myself. It’s a shift. Now when I shop I think about things a little differently. For instance I’m having some pants hemmed and instead of trying them on with heels for the tailor I’m taking along my platform sneakers, which is what I’m more likely to really wear them with. Thanks for sharing. 💗

Great video! I like what you said about rules - don't blindly follow but don't throw away. For me, I like to start my outfit without the rule and then if it doesn't look/feel good, I say to myself, ok is there a rule for this? It sounds funny but it works. I also like your advice about going into high end stores. Years back when I worked, I shopped more high end and I actually would find that most of what I bought in any given year/season, would actually come to the lower end stores a year and sometimes 2 years later! I couldn't believe that. Again great video and great advice. Reese Witherspoon has been a style icon for me mainly because she's also petite.

I could not think of a necklace that I had that would “elevate” the outfit until i remembered you talking about pearls in one of your videos and I had a pearl necklace the right length and color and wow I felt great! Also have bought 3 pairs of different nude color shoes which I like much better with white pants and jeans. My husband did wondered about 3 different shoes and I said different outfits! Hi Christine. Some viewers assumed I meant to copy the style of the icons. But really I think we develop an eye for good style as we are INSPIRED. So all four tips were meant to help us find inspiration, just rubbing shoulders, so to speak, with good style. I do think we can pause and study a fashion icon or a piece of art and simply ask, “what makes this so beautiful to me? Why is it appealing?” Hopefully that clarifies a little. I apologize for not being more clear about that.

Kay, I watch you a lot and have a file folder of the things that you wear that I particularly like...one thing I would like to ask you is do you have a style formula you wear to casual church...I can't quite get this one together... preconceived about dressing up....but things have changed🙃

    • @DressedforMyDaywithKayHarms
      @DressedforMyDaywithKayHarms  หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Ahh, that might make a good blog post idea. I do frequently wear a pair of great jeans, a simple sweater or tee and a jacket (usually a blazer). Depending on the season, I’ll wear pumps, flats, sandals or boots with that. Having some great blazers in my closet helps me feel pulled together and polished but still casual and comfortable. Another casual church formula I wear a lot is kind of the opposite of that: nice slacks, simple tee or shirt or lightweight sweater with a more casual jacket, usually a denim jacket for me. Then I usually wear either boots, nice sneakers or loafers. And yet another formula would be a simple but pretty dress with a denim jacket or utility jacket. Hope that helps.

Does style evolve or do we evolve, aka tastes change or desire to copy false idols? 😂
I believe the seasons of life and environment create organic changes! In addition: it seems contradictory to always be told that classic and good fabrics define good taste and class, while then push new trendy items monthly or by season. In my 75 years, I’ve seen it all and tried many, only to realize that what feels good (comfort) and bring joy are key to dress daily. 😂 I’m thrilled that I have not lowered my standards to flaunt my body to chase after pop stars or athletes. ❤

Well said ! Money & fame do not create good taste ! Quality over quantity , knowing quality of fabric , craftsmanship & design , etc. all translate to a well curated wardrobe w/ " staying power " . An occasional trendy accent piece or accessory is a fun thing but better to buy an updated spin on a classic that you love . Also , dress for your lifestyle which for most of us will include several groups - work , casual , hobbies , sports & those important but infrequent special events . 🥰

A question for you. I don't think I saw anyone with sandals. Is that a No-No?

As I watched the video, I realized I absolutely do not have a style icon! I could not think of anyone to emulate and I never have. I choose quality fabrics, cashmere, cotton, and leather for example. I do not follow trends, I use them for inspiration.

And that’s the point: inspiration. No need to emulate anyone. But each of the things I mentioned can provide inspiration. Thanks so much for watching and sharing your thoughts. 🥰

I really wanted to be Boho but I seem to look better in a more classic style.

Ahh, well maybe you can add a boho touch or two, such as a fun sandal or whimsical scarf. Fashion gives us the freedom to experiment. Enjoy!😊

Oddly enough, I actually look to men for style inspiration, such as old school gangsters, community leaders, etc, & I would try to emulate a female version of their outfits.

Hi Kay. What brand is the beige tank you are wearing? Can you tell me how it fits? I looked at some earlier in season but forgot to buy.

I’m 26 and I’m tired of the skimpy look. I want to please God with my wardrobe without the whole Muslim look, and I came across your channel! I’ve screenshotted a few of your outfits.
