I happily agree, the movie was excellently paced and set up every pay off from the beginning, at least when you don't switch your brain off to watch it. If they had made a joke or reference the whole scene would have fell flat since it was actually a legitimately tense action set with just the right amount of awesome thrown in. Not to mention the mere use of the sword being a clear indication of the point where they made a clear decision between the mission and collateral.

Giant robots and Kaijus were a really common anime trope in 1970-1980 like Goldorak (Grendizer), Godzilla, Mobile Suit Gundam, etc. Pacific Rim is the live-action version of those animes. The #1 aspect that makes it GREAT is the weight of the Jaegers. That's also the aspect that's missing in Uprising 😢.
