The Wood Whirler uses a dehydrator set at about 185 for 18 hours or so. I purchased one then promptly got diverticulitis that took me down and haven’t been able to try it yet. Seems to work well. I also use the microwave for speed drying and nearly always give all my blanks a minute in the microwave to kill any critters infesting the wood. I use mainly firewood type stuff that often has a boring insect of some sort

Great set up! Eventually my garage will be a garage and my woodworking/turning will have its own area. Bowl and info was good too. It’s always neat to see how everyone has their shops set up.

Yes Sam this video has everything, bit of life history Indians, coffee, microwave, offfice and of course some turning. Plus drying bowls in microwave. The only thing you didn’t have or mention was what power your microwave was.
Thanks Sam I learnt heaps. Used a microwave about 25 years ago and went from wet wood to finished bowl in about a week. I’ll have to try it again. Just received some very very wet tree logs, sheoak. Native Ozzie timber.

Really like your set up... Coffee pot is definitely a required item. The bowl turned out really nice. Thank you!

You couldn't have timed this any better ... I just rough-turned a dozen Ash blanks, wrapped them with shrink-wrap, and stacked them on my wife's side of the garage! Need to fire up the microwave and get busy. Thanks for the detail on your drying process.

Beautiful little bowl Sam. This is the thickest bowl that I have seen dried in microwave. Most I have seen dried in a microwave have been turned green to a very thin wall and then dried.

Yes, I agree. I have dried several cherry bowls/platters and all have been a little thicker. All have done very well drying in the microwave. Sam

Well done Sam. Obviously the microwave drying was a complete success. Your method of 30 seconds on and then letting it cool works very well. the clean up and finish turned out quite nicely. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe. PS, I am already looking forward to the June, 4 way challenge. 🙂🙂

Good looking bowl. I got a rather large microwave a while ago with this purpose in mind but have not tried it yet. This video encourages me to give it a try. Thank you.

      Good morning Al.
I just go very slowly when I do this. I’m in no great rush. I probably repeated this for this bowl about 15 times at 30 seconds. I think it works really well Sam.

Nice looking bowl Sam. One question, since you are taking several days to dry in the microwave, could one achieve the same results in a toaster oven set around 215 to 220 degrees F? The temperature of the bowl would never exceed that and the temperature is high enough to drive out all of the water.

      Mark,
I have a toaster oven in my shop that I use for stabilizing. I have done this hundreds of times with Wood. I think it’s a very good idea. My concern is just overheating the wood too fast. But I think it warrants investigation, I may try this in the future myself just to find out how it works. Thanks, Sam.

Has anyone ever used a food dehydrator? They work fantastic. Just put your wood in turn it on. Come back in about eight hours and it's ready to go. It's just one of the round food dehydrator type that had about six or so racks. I took each rack and cut the rack part out with a dremel saving the rings. Then stacked them back on the base and glued them together for ease of use. I can dry up to 12" bowl in about 6 to 8 hrs.

You never said what the final weight was after micro waving.
