I’m an artist myself, I can relate to him about the peace and quiet. I grew up in California in a family of 5 and when I turn of age I moved to Michigan because I wanted peace and quiet 😂♥️😂♥️😂

Great! Loved that video. Nice guy and, like so many enthusiastic artists, a real inspiration. I think at one point he mean't to say "talent is 99% enthusiam" or did I mis-hear?

Water color is like training your cat, is absolutely true. Especially if you have a cat that loves to get your attention, stares directly at you, the proceeds to swat your art supplies off the table.

A very nice video, I'm glad that this popped up among my recommendations. Art (every form of it) is, in my opinion, everything beautiful that society and culture created. Nobody needs art, we can survive and live healthily without it with ease. But art is what differentiates humans from animals, the artificial beauty and meaning that brighten our lives and what everyone seeks.
As of watercolors, for me it is the medium I am most familiar with, as in Germany we have art classes (plus occasional crafts projects) from first grade in elementary school, and we never used any other painting or drawing medium than watercolors (wich quality they were depended on the parents budget and how much they were willing to spend for that). Maybe because of the strict regulations regarding acrylic and oil color waste (it's toxic or pollutant waste).
However, I think it's time to give my Copic markers and Polychromo pencils some rest and go back to my good old Schmincke Horadam watercolors again.

'Picasso once said '' Every child is an artist, the problem is continuing to make art as an adult''. I like the way Stan explains Picasso's '' problem'' and it's repercussions. I have experienced a tremendous amount of peace, joy and contentment for over 65 years now from simply letting Julia Cameron's ''artist child'' out to play..... often. I've never felt a need to make a living at it, because I enjoyed my career so much, and Art as an extremely therapeutic hobby.

Ran across his teaching recently and was impressed with everything about his work, technique, and attitude. What he says about bringing art back to school is not only perceptive but absolutely true. Art and music were what I excelled in and had there not been a great art and music department at our school and a few teachers perceptive enough to realize this was where I belonged supporting me, I'd have been lost. It was before computers were affordable and in homes of those without affluence so I waited a long time to ever see digital art and learn to composite. Being able to buy acrylics and inexpensive brushes and poster boards, use cabinets, and walls were key components in being able to work art for a child without funding. Having an art department hand the keys to their art supply cabinets and allowing me to stay alone in their classroom to work in peace was everything to me. Bring art back into our schools, it's so important to creatives everywhere.

Eighteen months ago I took up watercolour painting after retiring from a forty-five-year career as a documentary maker. After struggling in the dark for quite a while, I discovered Stan Miller's online classes. From zero experience with watercolours, I now have the confidence to tackle commission work. As well as being a remarkable artist, Stan is an amazingly versatile teacher. From Stan's tuition, I have discovered the degree of commitment required to develop my own painting style; all I need now is another 20 years to perfect it ;-) Many thanks.

Firstly your work is stunning. I wasn't familiar with your name but the thumbnail for this video grabbed my attention like a strong magnet.
I still consider myself very much in the learning phase but I've been inconsistently making art for the last 10 years and did spend two of those learning in a structured academy setting.
Yesterday I made my first forray into watercolor on a whim, and after struggling for about 30 minutes.. I'm not even sure what happened, but it was like electricity. It felt RIGHT. I can't wait to develop my skills with this medium.
I really appreciated what you had to say, from the anecdote of your childhood wearing a cereal box to the anaogy of training a cat (so true), I felt like I was listening to a kindered spirit. You inspired me and helped to cement the notion of how right pursuing watercolor feels.
Thank you, for everything! And keep up the inspirational work please.

I have a BFA, fine art degree in illustration from the Academy of Art in San Francisco. Watercolor and illustration in other media is what I really wanted to do for a living. Almost immediately got funneled into graphic design instead; packaging design, point of purchase displays, etc. Everything digital, computer-based technology, because that media can be easily reproduced by the thousands. Then Photoshop work, Powerpoint designs, web-based formats, video editing and audio-visual systems management. Retired now; doing portraits for free and 3D animation with Blender for fun. Successful art career? Oh well, yeah, I guess so.

I love that part, when he said: I hated watercolor, I couldn't control it, because painting in watercolor is like training your cat while painting in oil is like training your dog. 😆 I agree so much! All people I met in life said that watercolor is for children and oils are for artists. I'm glad there are people who think like me. Especially such a talant ed and experienced artist as Stan Miller.

I shall change history by painting so much like a photo that ..well.. it looks like a photograph! Joseph Nicephore Niepce would be rolling in his grave if he saw this video. Who's life lived in vein Niepce or Stan Miller? or maybe to look in the mirror.

....as you also said, the way to world peace is by using art, music, satire and film, this is why in years gone by the cartoonist was so feared by politicians. One artist's work that you may like has his work on the front covers of 'The Week'. His attention to detail is superb.

If you owned rental property you wouldn't say that. Landlords buy the property, maintain the property, repair the property from damage from acts of God and repair property damaged by tenants! It costs MONEY! So, the moral of the story for you is become homeless and let "we the people" pay for your upkeep.

You are so right, Dwight. Our society is chaotic and our media as well as our outdated judicial system isn't helping. Stan Miller is a wonderful example of artist and citizen. Peace and quiet, yes especially when we work on our art. By the way, I like that statue of the Sacred Heart that he has on his drawing board. Says a lot about him: peace.

Hi! I'm Re Aberilla, and just like you, watercolours challeneged me! I'm still in the stage , where I'm pulled to each kinds of temptations, even Mixed Media, on willowing faces, but I tend to make the real stuff, and it's calling me! Thanks for your watercoloured faces! I found my true path in the ascention oof the classics!

  • @petergambier
    @petergambier 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Interesting story about your work Stan. I tend to draw cartoons of people and objects and only recently have I branched out into using brushes and proper oil paints rather than acrylics. Whenever I see a water colour piece I have this compulsion to add black ink lines to it but I loved your watercolour portrait work, it's truly stunning and as you have said if you find a face that you like it's nice to draw or paint it.
I especially like your portrait work starting at about 3.14, it's quite stunning and looks great but my own use of water colours is so naff so I will just stick to the ink cartoons because I'm happier doing them.
In order to be good at anything you have to practice and many artists give up because they think they are no good. I like to help up and coming young artists because others helped me when I first started out, so it's payback time I guess.
I also went to an art college and did a 2 year film animation course followed by almost 20 years in that business doing feature films and commercials but gave it all up when everything went digital by about 2003.
Nowadays I make my living from doing lime plastering and building work in sustainable materials like wood, cob and lime putty mortars, the traditional building skills I also carve in stone and I learned the latter from working with many different stone masons on zillionaires homes carving window sills, quoins, plinths and bosses.
The most relaxing times I have now are when I'm in my man-cave with a cup of tea, the radio on and bashing into a block of sandstone.
All the best from the south of England.
