Thank you, Fay! Wow, I've never thought of this song from a father/daughter standpoint. It always seemed like a husband/wife relationship to me. But I guess either will work because he doesn't really specify in the song. One thing is for certain; no matter who she is she definitely passed away at the end of the song ("the angels came") and did so while she was alone, which broke his heart. His love for her was so deep and she was so central to his life that her loss preoccupies his whole thought and feeling life. I love the imagery, ". . . now my life's an empty stage where Honey lived and Honey played, and love grew up . . ." The poetic expression in this song helps with the feeling it conveys. Also, the way he helps you know Honey in some of the ways he knew her and loved her before bringing you to the painful end really makes the song one that people tend to remember becuse it's easy to feel the deep sadness of it. I remember, even as a young boy, whenever I would hear this song it would just tear me up inside and I would start tearing up, which really embarrased me, lol.
