  • Estrogen is an important hormone and is increasingly being used as an anti-aging treatment, including for our skin. In this video I talk to two aesthetic specialists who also have significant general medical experience, Dr Qian Xu and Dr Emmaline Ashley, about the concerns and potential rewards of using estrogen cosmetically for our skin.

Quit creating anxiety about using estrogen. That lie that was told to us back about 20 years ago was a poorly done study. They also used synthetic hormones in that study. Estrogen is a woman’s best defense in many issues. Estrogen is protective for heart, bones …
Estrogen taken orally is not well used by the body. Patches and pellets are much better for all those issues.
Always choose bioidentical not synthetic estrogen or any synthetic hormone.
I’m not a dr just a well read 60 year old that refuses to age without hormones.

We should be given the option because it's our bodies and we feel better when we take them.

I take vaginal estrogen and vaginal cream 3 times a week, and also apply it on my face and hands lol it’s so great. For me it changed everything inside out I’m 52 and my face don’t look my age. I live in France where my doctor give me 1% . We did talk about the risks but no one it sure really.. like I asked my doctor, why is estrogen great for our first 50 years and bad after? We are women and our body needs it for support right? I don’t understand? Well I did my own experiment.. and my conclusion is … I love it and even though I use only the vaginal ovules and the cream, for me it really reverses the wrinkles, on my face, but also hot flashes, the weight, I have more energy, no more mood swings, and no more dryness. I hope my comment is some helpful insight ☺️ bisou from France and merci for this video, cause no one wants to talk about this so thank you again.

thank you, i was wondering about this, I was put into chemical menopause prior to my hysterectomy and they gave me 1% estrogen cream so I have a tube. Its good to know I can try to use a dab of my 1% cream on my face around my eyes and maybe it will help. I also have so much eye twitching, which is one of the annoying symptoms of low estrogen so maybe it will help with that.

Estrodil in the 50's, 60's and 70's was a prime ingredient in French face creams. It was removed after a while due to concerns about cancer issues, but now almost four decades later, it's deemed that estrodil (which is the weakest state of the hormone) can be applied topically one can purchase it in a simple white cream with little risk of cancer or negative health. One thing that was explained to me here in France is that one should cycle it - to my understanding. Three weeks on, one week off. BUT that is for my age and skin conditions.
There are different strengths and it is important to progress slowly and with some advice from someone you trust. Oral, patches, and full estrogen creme is strong. Estrodil is weaker.

timely and worthwhile topic par usual. I'm on HRT (all 3 as I still have a uterus). I also got a 'prescription' from MyAlloy which is .3% estriol. "They' know I"m on HRT which I would hope was factored into my strength, but I take online docs with a grain of salt. Seeing my regular ob-gyn soon and will run this by him. If you watch a recent Rajani vid you'll see him break it down a bit more, including the idea that estriol is the weaker (and safer?) estrogen to add. However, he also says that estriol doesn't show up on blood tests, so it's hard to say when it's difficult to measure. BTW, I called my compounding lab and they can/will compound that same face cream for roughly half the price with a local script. I plan to replenish that way as long as my ob-gyn is on board with it.

Mother Nature didn’t originally “plan” for women to live very long after their child-bearing years ended. At one point in history, about 50% of women would die with one of their pregnancies. Newly married women were often instructed to begin weaving their burial shroud just in case they didn’t survive the delivery of their first baby. If they did, they were expected to begin working on their husband’s burial shroud, should he be called up for war. If a woman did not survive her second pregnancy, her husband’s second wife would finish his shroud before beginning her own…Of course, there were exceptions: Robt Bruce’s mother, the Countess of Carrick, survived ten births, and most lived to young adulthood, at least! However, the fact is that many men had up to four wives in their lifetimes, due to the fact that they would lose 2-3 to complications of childbirth. The advent of modern gynecology and birth control has given women longer lives than they could have dreamed of 120 years ago!

Women (and people in general) dying too early during certain times in history has nothing to do with Mother Nature's plan. Humans are naturally designed to live 120~130 years. Too many people die early because they abuse their bodies or allow others (usually "doctors") to harm them. Nature is a wonderful thing -- don't mess with it.

I 100% DO NOT TRUST doctors, so I'm my own advocate in my health and wellness. The only time I've been to MD-style doctors is giving birth to my children (24&22), and if I had that to do over, I'd do home births, with no doctors involved. Most are big pharma drug dealers, with zero focus on root cause, or prevention. I go to a naturopath that I tell what tests I require, and he prescribes my HRT. If it wasn't for my bioidenticals, I would never need a doctor for anything, but he works for me, and takes direction. I'm nearly 56, am high-fat carnivore (6 years), and THRIVING. I read, research, etc, health, and handle my own life. My skin is young and supple, as I made an appointment the moment I entered perimenopause. I do have estrogen cream as an extra for my sublingual hrt, so I'll put a little on my face to see what happens.

I have zero trust in doctors, especially since Covid. The only thing I'd see a medic for now would be an emergency situation. Also, I SO agree with your summary of most MDs. And let's not forget the so-called regulatory agencies, which are bought and paid for by the same pharma industry. It's disgraceful. I could go off on a proper rant but I'm going to be good and stay calm and go and think nice things instead!

The concern over putting a vaginal estrogen cream, that has already been prescribed vaginal use, on the face is overly cautious, in my opinion. The dosage of vaginal estrogen cream is a full applicator, twice a week, inserted into a mucous membrane area that would absorb it at a much higher rate than the thicker facial tissue. Diverting a small amount to the face would not increase the overall exposure. Obviously a GYN is not going to prescribe vaginal estrogen (or other forms) to a patient where there is concern about the uterine lining or a family history of gyn cancers. But if women who HAVE been prescribed put the cream on their face that would have otherwise went further south, I’m not seeing where the concern is, medically.

They have no disease no aches and pains no mental health problems, healthy well adjusted children, very fertile to old age, no problems with childbirth, no menopause symptoms and they're happy truly happy. Mostly she's interviewed through the lens of nutrition and helping to prevent illness. However, it would be very interesting to hear an interview through the lens of helpful aging. I thought this week's video was excellent and informative and you should be congratulated for putting it together, not scolded for what you didn't say.
I think one of the best points the doctors raised is that the estrogen in skin creams is capable of passing the skin barrier, although I suppose to some extent that depends on the estrogen itself and the rest of the formulation. That should raise at least a small safety concern for some people. It's clear from the comments, though, that some people believe that creams, etc, applied to the skin can't be absorbed past the skin. It's equally clear from other comments that there is good reason to think that in those folks' cases, the estrogen was absorbed into the blood stream and had effects elsewhere in the body.
On the issue of transdermal skin applications, a few years ago I saw a fascinating (to me) video by an academic at one of the universities in Edinburgh, if I remember correctly, on the subject of the permeability of lead in historical skin makeup formulas. The academic was initially inclined to say no, because lead is a large molecule. She did some experiments on pigskin that produced two surprises. First, the formulas did not produce the expected dead-white complexion but mostly resulted in a rather pretty natural looking color. Second, in some formulations, the lead did penetrate the pigskin.

I must try to look up that academic as it sounds like they are near me. And thank you for the support on this. Anything relating to HRT is always a tricky topic because it’s so complex and I think the two doctors brought a balanced perspective.

@@thehonestchannel - I shouldn't have depended on my memory - she isn't near you. I've looked up what I was remembering and should correct details about the academic. Her name is Fiona McNeill, and she is or was a professor of physics and astronomy at McMaster University in Canada. Lead poisoning in women was apparently one of her specialties. The presentation I originally heard was a podcast on The Conversation's Weekly podcast of April 7, 2022.
If you're interested in the podcast, I don't believe I can put a link to it in a comment, but it's still available via an article on The Conversation's site entitled "Could lead makeup really kill you? A scientist recreated centuries-old skin whitening recipes to find out."

HRT is needed systemically in post-menopausal women to avoid bone loss, cancer, Alzheimer's and heart disease, among other degenerative changes due to estrogen loss. Vaginal estrogen is NOT systemic and is only effective on those tissues that come into contact with it. (Your doctor should have explained this to you if you are approaching menopause.) This is supported by a great deal of scientific evidence. You should be taking both oral AND vaginal if needed. Look up National Menopause Society for supportive evidence. Women's health has been neglected for far too long, making women afraid of the very hormones that will make them feel so much better.

I don’h have any botox, fillers or surgeries on my face, not because I’m against it, but because I can’t afford them. I’m 50 years old and how I got rid of my elevens and horizontal lines on my forehead is that I started pulling back my hair in a tight ponytail, this doesn’t allow my forehead to make any movements, my elevens disappeared and my horizontal lines are very faded almost non existent compared to 4 years ago. My face is starting to sag at the jowl line and my neck is showing some signs of aging. I don’t own any micro current device as they are so expensive, But I do some massage in the morning and has helped a little with the sagging. I only recently discovered facial massage (at 57). I cannot believe the difference it makes to my face! All the electrical devices I've ever bought (and also a laser costing £2000, what an idiot) made NO difference whatsoever (except for red light) The facial massage is free and makes an immediate, tangible difference. Oh, and castor oil has been INCREDIBLE! I use that on my face several nights a week, just a little bit. I also put it on my lashes and eyelids and it's stopped my insanely itchy morning eyes. I found out through wasting so much money, that the two things that made the most difference (well, any difference at all) are either free or very inexpensive.

Great interview, Clare. Interested in the oestrogen cream. I started menopause early and had very little symptoms. Recently an acquaintance couldn't believe my age, she thought I was at least 10 years younger. I don't do too much to my face really - sunscreen last few years - good skincare - but I do like to experiment and hear of new treatments or skincare lines. Thank you for this video, so validating! I am using a balanced hormone approach via a functional medicine specialist who uses a Dutch urine test for monitoring Estrogen/Progesterone/Testosterone/Thyroid every few months for balance
Without hormones as we age we can risk becoming decrepit and health compromised
I am addressing bone density, immunity, hair loss, libido, energy level/stamina/muscle strength, skin health and have found after just a few weeks my hair loss stopped and normalized! Another noticed my skin looked nice and my age spots have decreased!
My Gyne doctor knows nothing about HRT but does the usual check ups
I had been on hormones before at a younger age/early 50's then stopped late 50's and noticed health declines; am 67 now; a small group of us are seeing the same specialist for this and will be comparing notes...i will ask about facial hormone creams...keep on helping women as you have, you are a blessing!

Dutch testing REALLY is key. I am highly estrogen dominant and use a compounded estrogen cream. I am 51. I absolutely recommend Dutch testing as it is so comprehensive. I have to really keep an eye on my levels due to cancer history on my maternal side and adjust accordingly. Estridiol is the kicker for me, as that is the estrogen that really needs to be kept in check to prevent cancers. I would NEVER put that on my face neck or chest. Estriol, maybe. People need to understand estrogens aren’t scary, per se, and yes the study that “started it all” was flawed, but if you aren’t keeping an eye on your estrogens you ARE taking and just think everything will be fine, you may have a really rude awakening. My levels change constantly. If I didn’t tweak things a bit I would be getting too much of one and not another. And that is where things go wrong. I really hope women realize this is not a one size fits all that they just take and never worry about. They are setting themselves up for a horrible future that way.

"history of cancer in the family "= time to consider if you and family were exposed to parasites from family pets, farm animals, etc., especially cats! New studies report that humans infected with the cat parasite T.gondii ( they warn pregnant women not to clean cat litter for that precise reason) can carry the parasite for decades, inside organs, even the brain, and under stress,or time of depressed immune system, like in old age,the parasites become active. Diagnosed Dementia, Parkinsons ,some "cancers" turned out to be parasite infections, not family DNA disorders. ( if it's DNA disorder the doctor should be able to identify the specific gene, and function.....do we really trust centralized doctors/ medicine these days?) These parasites are usually embedded inside the tissues of the organs, and a blood test would probably not reveal their presence until an autopsy. The " experts " that published these findings suggested that we should assume parasite infections if diagnosed with cancer, dementia, brain tumors ( parasites fecal matter could show up in CAT scan- 🤢and be considered tumors🤮).

But after 4 months my bloodwork showed little improvements in hormone levels so in my case there was very little systemic absorption. I then switched to a pill. I am adverse to the hormone replacement that is inserted under the skin because I have many allergies and if there’s an issue you are stuck for months until it wears off. Every time I would finish a treatment of antibiotics, soon after I would get another UTI. Finally in desperation, my doctor sent me to a Urologist. He prescribed estrogen cream to be applied to the Labium minus around my vagina. quickly the UTIs stopped and after a year I have noticed that when I apply a pea size amount of cream on that area, my skin is so soft and supple like I was young. So, I began to wonder what it would do to my neck and face. I am due for my annual exam in a few days, I intend on asking this question. My cheeks actually look nicer after over a year of usage. I was wondering if my new face creams were finally working. But you mentioned that some women's cheeks actually appear changed like the topical estrogen can affect the facial skin. I don’t think you need to put estrogen directly on your face. It’s the internal effect of applying it to traditionally inner arms and legs that saves your collagen. I have been using BHRT for decades and never put it on my face. My skin is so good dermatologists are shocked. I used the estrodiol not the weaker estrogen so that may be different. I don’t see any extra difference in the skin where I regularly apply it.
I can’t imagine being without my estrogen. I only had four months of menopause and it was awful. I went straight on the BHRT . I saw my mother go through it all and she never slept through the night after her 50s. Estrogen saves skin bones and the vascular system. It keeps muscle mass up and fat deposits in the healthy places, aids sleep and good mood and is a preventative for dementia. Without it you get aches and pains as it is anti inflammatory.

From personal experience, about five years ago I used to do this and developed lumps in my breasts and gained some weight from an estrogen face cream. This is why one should have a blood test every year to check hormone levels. There is also a chance one will get cancer if one doesn’t use hormone replacement. I’m willing to take the very small risk to maintain my overall health-quality of life.

I find it interesting that Dr's are all cautious about estrogen being used on the skin, because we'll it could absorb into the body.
Seriously women had estrogen coursing through their bodies and skin before perimenopause and menopause and yet Dr's are all freaking out that if a woman replace what she has lost she might get health issues.
Maybe our health issues are because of loss of hormones not because of replacing them.
Its like men who get prostate issues, PSA test shows the prostate has inlarged, why, because the male hormone testosterone has lowered so the estrogen is higher and causes the prostate to enlarge, often taking testosterone can improve it, but Dr's all freaking out about giving hormones the once were so important to male function.
You very rarely see young men with prostate issues, because they don't get them when the have normal levels.
Just like women who have normal estrogen progesterone levels don't have breast cancer or heart attacks or osteoporosis generally.
It's only when those levels drop do the issues of aging kick in.
Everyone's scared of giving both men and women hormones when its those hormones that slow the aging process and give them a much better quality of life.
I know I would rather risk it and feel and live better on HRT it should be my risk to take not Dr's scared of losing their licence to practice telling us what to do with our bodies we show be given a choice based on the facts.
Back to men who have treatment for prostate, the take away all their hormones, my doctor calls at chemical castration, because they think that testosterone caused the enlarged prostate prostate.
Instead what they get is potentially depression osteoporosis feeling miserable no interest in sex and goodness knows what other health problems increase chance of heart attack cancers.
I feel so sorry for them.
Unfortunately this is how the medical profession is.
Because of some study somewhere that is often proved wrong in the long-term.
I am using my vaginal oestrogen cream on my face, I'm taking my HRT without it I'd rather be dead because I am miserable no interest in life, waiting to die.
But when my hormones are good I sleep better I feel like doing more of everything.

Absolutely true! Here in my country Pakistan, there's no form of estrogen is available whatsoever.
What should menopausal women do here, just be miserable and die 😢

Exactly they use scare tactics to get women to stay away from estrogen but have no problem pumping underage people with all the hormones they need to switch genders it’s so absurd

People dont take creams seriously when it comes to dangerous effects it may have on our healths just because its topical. In my experience nothing is gotten me more sick than using tretinoin. Everytime i used it i have had throbbing migraines that took months to go away. I have tried every method to incorporate tretinoin in my routine. But nothing works. Ive given up on it. Its truly dangerous for me personally. The headaches were unbearable. I wonder how much i would have suffered if i used it more than once a week.

So sorry to hear that. It's potent stuff and I guess this goes to show how we all react differently and there is no single 'gold standard' for all.

@@thehonestchannel there are so many people reporting on these headaches( more like skull aches) that tret causes. Nobody really speaks about them. I found a few research papers stating this.
I spent one year with these migraines not knowing tret could cause that. I thought it was just my diet or stress or something.

@@sag6565 You hear very little generally about the negative side effects of tret. I have explored it on this channel and was met with quite the backlash! Really sorry you suffered in that way. If you have links to the research papers I'd be interested in taking a look (clare@honest.scot)

Migraines with aura (or without but with other risk factors) above 35 are contraindication to take the anticonceptives. So, I would strongly recommens you not to use this, it can even cause stroke in high concentratations and you can't monitore that.

What's absolutely crazy I'm 44 and my male PCP WON'T apply me any prescription estrogen because he said it's got cancer as a serious side effect! Of course he's a man so he doesn't even understand how horrible menopause is!!! What is HRT? Is that the cream that people are using on their face(prescription)?

    • @thehonestchannel
      @thehonestchannel  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hopefully you can find another doctor for a second opinion. HRT is hormone replacement therapy.

Look up MIDI Health online. You’ll be able to set an online appointment covered by insurance with women doctors who specialize in menopause and hrt. I finally got help through them after multiple doctors couldn’t or wouldn’t help me.
