    The reasons for the walls is you can hide messes easier. You can limit guests to a certain room and limits them seeing the house a mess.

      It also means you can heat one small area rather than the whole house.

    Relax, just because you have endless possibilities doesn't require you to start them all now.
    It's the journey not the destination that deserves appreciation.
    Pretty certain you can give a "Hollar" to a friend who has a trailer that could move the Kubota here and back.
    Unsolicited advice, a horse for a daughter brings her delight and in my experience keeps her coming around the ranch even after she moves out.

    Hello from TN! Might I suggest that you pay a good portion of your mortgage off, before you put a large investment into ALL of the buildings. You take your time, watch your land live through a season. It will tell you where low places that hold water are. After several months, who knows what could need repaired, or replaced. In the meantime, live with what you have, pay down your loan. They can only charge interest on the normal payment, any extra comes off the bottom line. Prepare for several months worth of payments! I can't emphasize that enough! When Danny was injured at work, we were lucky enough to have extra put back for this type of situation. We have always told our children to put back enough for 4 to 6 months worth of bills! It shows my age, that I think of people on TH-cam, (Some of my favorites) almost like my children!
    Get the Animals that you want, not what other people suggest For you. One step at a time! Fences first! Since your property line is different than the current system, you might want to fence it all in, as you can afford it. I truly wish you all well at your new home! GOD bless

    The 60s & 70 walls everywhere was becuase of the cost of heating our homes. That is also why ceiling went from 10' to 7'.

      Cape Cods and ranches are often cut into smaller rooms for just that reason. And carpeting is usual in many of the homes in more northern states (not considered "nasty").

    Walls were to reduce drafts by basically having wind breaks, because not every room was well insulated.
    Additionally, in the 1970s heating and cooling homes was insanely expensive. You had specific rooms/ areas that got heated or cooled. The whole "open concept" is only possible because our country is so much wealthier today, and central heating is much more reasonable and efficient.
    Basically, we waste ship tons of energy now, whereas years ago people would not keep entire homes at 70 degrees 24-7.

    • @thisorthat7626
      @thisorthat7626 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Movin On, thank you for pointing our that we are basically spoiled these days with heating and AC for the entire house. My 1940s house has small rooms and I love it because I can shut off the other rooms and only heat the room I am in. And it has big windows so cooling is ceiling fans and opening up the windows at night. Works great. When I hear how much people are paying for electricity, I am blown away! And we know that utilities are going to continue to go up in cost. Blessings to you.

    We originally lived in one room with 'lofts' used as bedroom spaces like in a 'Tiny House' so having many rooms started off as a 'Status' thing I'm sure but then we realized that it was easier to heat & cool small 'closed off' spaces. Brings down those costs.

    We are in the process of buying a 1.5 acre property that has a lot of potential for a small homestead. It’s partially fenced, has an old hen house that needs some updating, a small pole barn, and a 30x50 metal building that half is set up as a shop and the other half is set up as a barn. We are pretty excited.

    Justin, pass this message along.... Hey Jason, your prosciutto will do a lot better in the basement (since it's not damp) hanging near a window that you can open every now and then to give it some air, but don't hang it in direct sunlight or right in front of the window. Love in Christ to you all, from Italy.

    I had seen Jason and Lorraine on other channels including yours, the Hollars, etc. but had never been able to remember what their channel name was. I was delighted a few weeks ago when they popped into my "Recommended" videos and I've been catching up ever since. Not only are they so smart and skilled, but they are absolutely lovely, humble people who are willing to share what they know and, perhaps more importantly, what they don't know.
    I'm so happy for them and I am thrilled that they've found their new home(stead) so close to the friends they adore and who are there to help them out, as they've been helped by them before.
    Lovely homestead and I'm excited to see what Jason does with the house and what they do to the land, garden, etc.

    I know many folks have said this, but make a list with priorities, get settled first with your must do priorities and then look at your vast amount of land and start slow. Install the animals you left with and begin your garden. Then as these first systems are in place then focus on the next step. It seems when hobby farmers begin they try to get every animal and it becomes overwhelming. You do not want it to be so much you cannot physically handle it and it takes a toll on body and mind. Just remember what you had that sustained you and the family for the years you were in the smaller spot and slowly ease into the larger area. Don't get so overwhelmed and have it burden your health and family. Also, I'm not a grazing land expert, but the land looks like it needs to be given time to grow good forage for animals. It look like it's packed down and need arriated.

    Jason and Lorraine deserve all the best and I am so happy for them Jason and Lorraine it may be overwhelming for you at the moment, what with selling the old place, packing, not getting the keys to the new property etc etc is a lot on ones plate and all at once. Take your time get the feel of the place. Watch your first rains etc etc and getting your home in order is the first thing all ways the first thing every one takles so take a deep breath go slow and enjoy. We thank you for taking us on your journey. Have a lovely day.

  • @joanschauer2606
    @joanschauer2606 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Such nice land....you have wind also. Watch how the wind blows as it affects the garden a lot. Wind will dry out tomatoes and some of the other crops very fast and often need to keep the plants covered a lot. Visit with the people in your neighborhood and see what they do with the wind as far as crops, buildings and entries, etc. So much to learn about this place and it will be so much fun getting it in shape. Slowly is the word. So easy to lay at night and plan what you will want to do. Good Bless. Joan

    'Sow The Land' is absolutely one of our favorite channels! They are so genuine and creative! I can't wait to see the potential of their new homestead! They are amazing! I hope they consider offering different workshops to share their knowledge. The chicken processing workshops are so great and it gives me confidence to try myself. Thank you, Justin, for showcasing such a beautiful family! I can't think of anyone more deserving of the new land/home 🏠😍🌾🌱🌻🌱🌾🌄🐑🐄🐖🐐🐔🐓🐣🐤🐥🤭

    I love the realistic questions you’re asking. Often times those might be reasons people hesitate jumping into this lifestyle, buying land, or just buying a house in general.

    Ben would probably loan you the trailer to get Justin's bush hog. I've told Meg that I'd love to be in the friend group....I watch everyone...I was so happy when Miah and Jess moved East too.

    Loved the tour, thank you for sharing! I only have 2 acres, but it'd just me (I wish I had a hubby to help with the heavy stuff though). God Bless you all!
