These are young musicians and they do a great job with this incredibly demanding piece. In thirty years, they'll do it differently, maybe even better, with a longer line and more emotional depth. Who cares? I'm frankly grateful that anyone under 80 is even still interested in Beethoven or western art music at all. So Ms Jang and Ms Gutman: brava, and brava. You're the future. Which is why I don't get all verklempt about it.
Usually, when a violinist is that animated, I feel like they're faking it somewhat to put on a good show. Yoojin is so far from fake, it's hard to take your eyes off of her. I hadn't heard this sonata before watching this video, and I think this is the only recording I'll want to hear. It's so wonderful and heartfelt.
With all due respect for the technical accomplishments that allow the participants to perform the music at all, their collective failure to take Beethoven's markings seriously or even to develop a rudimentary sense of where phrases begin and end, results in a boring non-interpretation with little movement or expression. I wonder who coached this: I would bet my house that it was neither Mr. Sherman nor Mr.Zander nor Mr. Rosenbaum
At NEC she studied with Miriam Fried, who has more musicality, technique and teaching ability in her big toe than Benjamin "handsy" Zander can aspire to in a lifetime. And I thought the phrasing and dynamic range was excellent for a live performance.
@@jeremyy445 The sonata and its enormous difficulties were confronted not by one person ("she") but by two. All ten of the sonata are true dialogues between equals. Did t Miriam Fried, a superb teacher a your say, coach both performers in a chamber music class or was she the violin teacher of the violinist?

Beautiful. The slow movement especially. Menuhin called the piano intro to it among the best music ever composed.
Wonderful playing. Impeccable and so graceful. A joy to listen to. What more could one ask for?

this is a very challenging piece to stay concentrated while playing. thanks. both the violinist and pianist did a good job.
Magnifique travail de la part de ces deux très grandes musiciennes.
A solid straight-forward performance. Easy to hear and enjoy. Thank you for the video.
